Yep, I found out from another regular that one of the auctions we attended recently  was actually a glorified garage sale for the facility owners buddies to fill units full of stuff they were trying to get rid of and just for fun see how much they could make at auction. It sure beats having to run your own garage/yard sale and have a bunch of strangers at your house when you can just ask your friend who owns a storage facility to let you put your garbage and yard sale stuff in an empty unit and put it up for auction.

Also think of something comfortable, remember most units are not climate controlled, so if it is hot outside, it will be hotter in side the lkr. And if it is cold outside, it will roughly be about same temp inside the lkr, a lil bit warmer or a hell of alot colder.

My advice, Tangerine or Banana Speedo, serves to purposes:
1. What better way to beat the sumertime heat!
2. Everyone will be so busy staring at you, they won't be able to concentrate on bidding!

Yea, and any baseball cards from 1989-2001 will become hugely collectible too!!

In my area it's typically camo, denim, & t-shirts; but recently I have noticed more penny loafers, khakis, Polos, & jewelry. I'm wondering if people with money think storage auctions might be a fun hobby or business venture. Could be a game changer if well-to-do people start jumping into the business.

I think the economy along with the TV shows is forcing more people to consider storage auctions as a source for income or just a place to furnish there house for cheap. I am hearing more "buzz on the street" that people are ditching estate sales and yard sales and looking into storage auctions just to buy things for thier own house. Of course the problem with that for the rest of us is they are not motivated by Return On Investment, so they don't care about "over bidding" on a unit. I also think with unemployment compensation running out for people and the lack of jobs returning to the market, it's going to get more competative out there. Those who have been in this business have seen the extraordinary changes in the last year, I think it is going to continue to change. In 5 years if you are using the same business model that the "old timers" of been using up to this point and just trying to recreate what they have done, you probably won't be able to compete in this business.

Just my opinion.

Yep, start with a trailer. Low initial investment, low maintenance, low insurance, and easy to sell once you realize spending hours digging around in rat poop for used Walmart stuff is not the life for you.  :D

Welcome to the club!

I would keep going just for the free bottled water and hot dogs!  ;D. Your whole story made me laugh but then again I might want to cry. I hope that fiasco you encountered is a rare event and does not become a growing trend for storage auctions around the country. In my area the bidding has tried to stabilize, but the auctions at the larger facilities that bring out the newbies are still a crap shoot and still way too high. Going to a big one this Thursday, I will see how the trend is going.

When the unit is so packed full you can't even climb over the top to get to what ever is stored in the back, then I would say the employees or the owner of the facility have not picked it clean of goodies. Thats just one of the reasons why I like totally stacked out units.

As far as finding the 'SHADY" locations, once you have been doing the auction circuit for a while you will find out from the "old timers" which facilities to steer clear of, or you will figure it out because none of the consistent regulars show up at certain facilities, or better yet you find out through experience.

@ Millertime about the spiders...

And thats why customers at the flea market don't understand why we come across the table going for the throat when we are selling a $150 item for $25, and they say "I'll give you $10".

Disclaimer: (I do not actually do this, nor do I support violence against 'pain in the butt' customers, but I must admit the thought comes to mind.)  ;D

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: small town or big cities?
« on: July 23, 2011, 06:37:42 PM »
In my limited experience small town auctions don't necessarily mean cheaper units. There is a smaller city 30 miles north of me that every auction I have been to the bidding was higher then in the metro area. Don't know why, maybe the people in that city have more money to burn, it's primarily a working class city so it does'nt make sense to me. I have been to some REALLY small towns in the mountains over an hour and half away from me. The prices were about the same, maybe a little less, but for me it was more expensive considering the fuel costs. The thing about small towns is you tend to find things related to the local economy. Carpet & flooring production is the major industry in most of the towns south of my metro area so when we win a locker down there most of the time it has something from the carpet or flooring industry in it.

Here is my 2 cents.

Who's idea, dream, goals, business plan, is it? Who's the innovator driving the engine? If you invented the wheel, would you give 50% of your profits to the guy that helped you haul the block of stone to your cave?

Something to think about...
