They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery; maybe this is an example.

One of the watchdogs of the storage industry has conducted a survey of storage auction buyers impressions of the industry as it exists today.

One of the thrusts of the survey deals with the "new" online storage business which has been finding its way for several years but has yet to break through on any kind of significant presence throughout the United States.

Here's some news that will be of interest to all storage auction buyers (IMO) with (according to the story) results of a survey about what auction buyers believe about the business as it exists today.

Posted in this thread so Travis wouldn't have to MOVE it.

Online Storage Auctions / Re: Trilpled my money today online!

Maybe it's just an untapped market?

North Carolina is not alone. I looked at one of the online auction sellers the other day...they had a map of the USA showing where their auctions were. I don't remember which of the outfits it was, but of 48 states there were auctions in maybe 6 to 8 and they were on the west and east coasts and in the south...of course there is a lot of population in those areas as opposed to Nebraska for instance.

So is this guy dragging this out for publicity for his book?

No, not everyone has that motivation.  ;D

He is wealthy like Gates, Buffett, etc (I don't know the exact figure) and has nothing to gain in that regard.

The book is only available at one place...a store in Santa Fe which he sold years ago. Any proceeds go to a charity.

He professess that he wants to get people off the couch and away from cell phones, etc and enjoy the outdoors and maybe discover something about themselves they didn't already know.

No, it would be disappointing if "someone" found it,
it would be "neat" if "I" found it!

It will be a miracle if anyone finds it. The clues (widely available on the internet) could mean a lot of different things.

Still, it's fun  to imagine finding it and the exploring alone would be worthwhile. Walking a trail is a lot more fun (IMO) than cleaning out a locker (or at least MOST lockers).

And Californian's built the S.S. Minnow

And TL2 is a sock puppet...sort of like mini-me and just as bald.  ;D

This thread is an attempt to provide links to sources outside this forum which express opinions about the online storage auction approach to selling storage units.

It doesn't matter to me whether those links are PRO or CON this new approach. I'll start this thread with a link to an almost 10 minute comment on this subject.

Feel free to add your own outside links. If you want to add your OWN opinion here too that's OK, but there are already several threads running along those lines.  The outside comments from people not associated with this forum would be a refreshing change, even if WE have to provide them.

I'm not a fan of YouTube in general or of this fellow in particular but here it is.

Read the comments below the video as well....that's another chance to get a VARIETY of opinions.

Just when we thought we were "safe" they pull us back in !

No start date yet apparently.

Since they just recently started shooting for SW Canada, I think it might be a bit longer. Can't wait to see what they pretend to find there!

Should be fun, eh?

The Lounge / Re: I call this effective advertising !

I've had their coffee and if you're correct I can honestly say that commercial is guilty of false advertising.

That could be true and true of a lot of advertising, but as I said I just thought they had a clever approach to selling the product.

So there are more ways than one for storage businesses to profit from auctions, whether it is illegal, immoral, or otherwise..................................

When you consider that they are there 24 hours a day, behind locked gates after hours, there are a lot of things that could happen.

A half dozen of the possible ways this could benefit a less than ethical manager have been discussed on this forum in the past.
