I had a guy from craigslist today come to buy a bamboo chair I was selling. He was asking about other household stuff so we started going through tubs.

Wound up finding some stuff from an auction like 6 months ago that I never even looked through.

2 Complete Sets Noritake China Bout $22 a plate on Ebay

Lots of Lead Crystal Glassware

A Dozen Calphalon Pans Some around $80 on ebay some pretty cheap

Fishermans helper Cutco Knife Probably an Easy $60 on ebay, new over a hundo

That was a nice little surprise

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Question about a check
« on: February 22, 2011, 01:31:50 PM »
Some people steal checks out of the mail bleach off who its made out to put their name and cashthem. That's not legal not just b/c they stole it from the mail but b/c they altered the check.

This guy would have to write his name on the check.

I'm no lawyer but I would imagine it comes down to intent. Some people give people a check signed nad made out for an amount and let them fill in their own name. I do this with a contractor buddy of mine as sometimes he wants it to himself soemtmes to hiscompany but my intent is that he gets that money just a matter of who he made it out to.

In this instance it clearly was not this persons intent to have this stranger who bought his locker cash the check.

I'm no legal expert but 99.999999% sure its not legal and even if it is its not the right or decent thing to do.

Highly illegal, a dirtbag thing to do take more money from people who just lost their storage unit with all their stuff, plus even if you did cash it it's probably from an old closed checking account or there's probably no money in there so either way you woudl probably get no money and ow your bank money for bouncing a check.

I hate finding boxes of PSP and other portable video games, ipods, etc.

These days the manuals are so thick and there's so much extra marketing, packaging and other crap in the boxes when you pick them up there's some weight to them.

I always get excited thinking I got whatever electronic is in there but open it and and always nothing there. The weight of the manuals and stuff though makes me think there was though.

I don't have any ideas particularly but I was recently playing with headers for my blog and a couple buddies websites I set up for them the other day.

I did some cool stuff but I wound up going back to just clean and simple. I kinda like what you have now actually. I kinda like how craigslist and facebook and sites like that even though they are huge keep things clean and simple.

You should post some stuff  examples of ideas you got. Look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Not necessarily a smart thing to do but my first auction I took the last $470 in my bank account and went not planning on buying just checking it out. I was impressed...actually...spoiled by my first unit. Bid $400 leaving $70 to last me til next paycheck.

It was a silent/sealed bid auction, won it at $400, luckly gf at the time lived wtih her brother who had a truck I borrowed.

Had to sell a few electronics asap to get some living money back and then took my time selling off the rest. I was hooked and been doing it even since, now have a larger pot of bidding money.

I don't use a credit card, prefer to pay cash as to not get myself into a whole but lots of people are now taking credit cards in my area, personally I'mj not crazy about that but I bring my cc just incase some easy to get rid of high dollar item comes along and I"m short cash. Pretty much soemthing like an out of business store restaurant unit or a car.

I stopped in at this resale shop again. My furniture and home decor stuff flies off the shelves so do consignment for that stuff. For teh clothes I just take the cash. They have so many clothes what are teh chances of someoen buying mine, I'd rather take the guranteed cash.

Other Forms of Selling / Re: Sports Cards
« on: February 15, 2011, 07:00:00 PM »
Unless your willing to go to sports conventions and set up tables your going to get very little money for your cards. Even if you do go to conventions prices are still pretty low, just not the market for sports memorbilia let alone cards.

I don't think it will ever come back anywhere near what it used to be. It actually used to be an industry, not its more like a hobby. Kids are too into xbox, facebook etc not going to be interested in cards like I used to be and I'm not even that old.

If your not into sports take whatever you can get. Personally for me I am into sports so the pennies I'm going to get for my cards isn't really worth it. I'd rather keep it and give them to my kids. Don't think the value will even be there down teh road but just something cool to have.

I remember when I was younger and collecting my dad always telling me about all these great cards he wish he had kept.

The Lounge / Best Affiliate Programs to Join?
« on: February 15, 2011, 06:33:41 PM »
I imagine some of you have online stores or websites where you sell some of your storage merchandise. Maybe some of you also have niche sites about storage auctions, resale, etc.

Just curious if anyone has any tips on affiliate programs. Specifically hoping to hear which google affiliates you use and which you ahve the most success with?

I have accounts at buyat and a few others but find plain old google adsense beats all those put together so been stikcing with adsense.

I noticed google also has google affiliates which are managed through your adsense account. I like the idea of having adsense and my affiliates in one place, dont need multiple accounts, dont need to track multiple programs got everything in one place.

Wondering if anyone has any experience with google affiliates and waht programs you have the most success with.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Weekend Auctions?
« on: February 15, 2011, 11:02:31 AM »
In my area there's very few weekends auctions, normally only when it's a large auction in the city like 40 units plus.

I try to take a day off on days with a lot of auctions. I also normally have a weekday off every other week which I can choose so I choose good auction days and go those days. If you can't ever be free on weekdays your not going to get to attend many auctions.

If your a teacher what time do you get out of school? IN my area on those circuit auctions where you follow around from burb to burb there's normally auctions running until five or six at night, you could probably hit the last 2-3 auctions each day.

I have a huge collection of personal sports cards from when I was younger but have a whole nohter collection I have found in auctions of baseball, basketball, pokemon, etc cards.

There just doesn't seem to be much of a market for them like there was even when I was younger not that long ago.

If I'm not too lazy I'll start flipping through boxes and just toss all the big names aside and either list them individually on ebay or take them to a card shop. Still don't make very much off of them.

The other option is sell them as an unsorted lot basically say in an ebay listing I havn't looked thorugh these could be some good stuff in there type deal. I think people normally asume even though I am lazy adn didn't look through that I did and took the good cards out so they sell for a price according to taht assumption.

I would say best bet would be go to a card shop you wont geta lot but its less hassle. If you have a giant collection may be worth going to a sports memorbilia convention.

I don't blame you for putting adsense up, no problem with that, you run the site you deserve to make some money but the overall look from the site aside from that I found more difficult to look at.

I like having the storage auction forums button at the top so I can jump back to hte main menu. The origional way also just seemed clearer to look at. You should put your adsense back up though, everyone has that

When you changed it it reminded me of citydata which I'm not crazy about.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: profiling a locker
« on: February 14, 2011, 09:05:43 PM »
My best lockers seem to come from Philipino people. They wear mostly designer clothes, nice handbags, stuff is well taken care of. Only problem is the stuff is all super small...lol. I was gonna keep some mens clothes and shoes for myself but all size 9 shoes and sleeves are a few inches short for me and I'm not even a big guy like 5'8". Womens clothes are all petite sizes, great stuff but since majority of our population is fat its tougher to sell.

In my state of IL facility gets to keep whatever they are out in rent and late fees. The remainder goes back to the buyer. In my state they could not do piece piece auctions and keep all the proceeds for themselves.

I guess laws probably vary state to state. The whole storage auciton thing seems crazy in Canada, a big mish mash of laws, nobody seems to know the correct way things are to be done and its done differently all the time
