Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #1...January, 2013
« on: January 04, 2013, 12:34:16 PM »
No regular auctions this week for me, but went to a "piece by piece" auction and got a few things. For me the picking (whether at the piece by piece or yard sales, etc) has been as productive or better than the auctions.

Just wondering if people bought fewer or more lockers in the last year than they did in 2011.

My answer is in my signature line and I'm thinking 2013 will be similar...maybe 15 or so...unless things change for the better..that is quality of lkrs goes up and prices stay reasonable.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Furnishing your home for free

Just remember to claim any inventory kept for personal use on your income taxes so you can pay your fair share to Uncle Sam.  ;)

I know Alloro claims any items he keeps. The ONLY law he breaks is that of "going with the flow of traffic" in order to maintain the safety of all involved !    ;D

Have you or would you ever do something like this for a total stranger?

No.

You're welcome !  It's just more of the same as I said. I'll continue to watch them, but don't know if I'll review them. The estimated values are still out of line...the characters are somewhat interesting, but....?

Next on their plate...the Florida edition. With all those retirees down there the values are going to go sky high !

Episode #2….Harlem.

Mike (the Hustler) says he’s a storage day trader…flips it fast.

Joe (the Legend) says he used to buy 20 to 50 “rooms” a week. Is that even possible?

Cameraman and editor show butt shots of the girls walking…classy!

Lkr #1

Pile of crap…bet it goes for $200; we’ll see.  Dorm room chic. Girls think vintage clothes. Sells for $125 to the girls…maybe about right.

Lkr #2

Joe the Legend uses a BLACK LIGHT to check the clothes for cleanliness ! That’s a first.  Goes for $225 to Joe P. “I’ve been Joe peed !”

Girls get:  purple cube fridge, leather bag ($10), shoes, leather jacket (yellow and pink), commercial break and when we come back something fantastic in a black garbage bag !

Lkr #3

Cameraman and everyone else looks up one of the girl’s dresses….more class act !

Mike looks like a serious contender on this one…we’ll see. It starts at $500..goes for $700 to Mike. “A true hustler’s” locker he says.

Mike finds….a diary…his help reads it, bullhorn ($75 ?), black computer towers (2) and an avanlanche ensues. He gets a massage table..says they’re big money.

Joe Peet looks at his locker and sees….the usual..he wants a score. He finds binocs he thinks are good…even on tv I can see they are straight-throughs…no prisms…says cheapies to me.

***

The girls get an expert to look at the mink…they thought as much as $200. Expert says it’s from 70s to 80s vintage. No designer label. Coat worth (she says)….$3,000…even with a lot of fur showing through the inside seams…Yeah Baby…Storage Wars lives up to its rep.

The binocs….expert says….$1,000. This is just ridiculous unless he knows something I don’t. The expert was wearing prismatics around his neck and these were non-prismatic. Any binoc experts here in the forum?

Mike the hustler takes some pearls to an expert…value estimated at $225 for three pieces.
Goes to Steve’s tattoo shop and gets $250 and a touch up on his tattoo for the two pieces of  massage equipment.

Back with some comments after I watch the first episode.

Storage Wars New York, Premiere episodes, January 1, 2013

The players:

The Legend, The Loudmouth, The Conscience, The Flame, The Firecracker, The Hustler

Loudmouth and Conscience (partners?), The Flame and The Firecracker (partners).

Brooklyn…Moshie’s Self Storage

Locker #1

The ooh’s and ahh’s sound like someone held up a cue-card prompting a response !

First lkr is tumbled down, maybe an art gallery leftovers. Goes to $1K in nothing flat.
Sells at $1500 to the Legend (Joe P).

Locker #2

Two totes and 3 black garbage bags. Loudmouth plans on bidding up the girls.
Candy gets it at $155 ( Candy is The Firecracker…red hair).

Locker #3

Lock cutter breaks the bolt cutters !  Goes quickly to $500 and sells to Tad for $525.

Joe’s art locker has semi-professional art, metal table (artsy-fartsy), photography on canvas. He spent $1500 and thinks it’s worth…$16,000.  One of the art pieces is worth $7,000.

Girl’s lkr has the totes and 3 garbage bags…..shoes in black boxes, maybe $10 a pair.
First tote…bustier, leather shorts…no dance pole though. Tap shoes.  Change their outfits and go to a Broadway performer….he know the tap shoes and says they are worth….$2,000 if they were owned by Liza Minelli…BUT…probably not and therefore worth…$80 to $100.

The two guys walk their dog down the hall…ever see THAT at one of your auctions? I haven’t.  So far junk.

The guys find a TEC infrared BBQ grill…new (take it to an appraiser) or do what we do…look it up on eBay. They put some steaks on the grill… EXPERT SAYS…..$1675…online with shipping. I’ll look it up on eBay.

That's episode one.....pretty much like the original series...new faces, new places, same inflation rate.  ;D

eBay / Re: How do you become an eBay power seller?

I had my writer do some digging and she put together this article: http://auctionstx.com/how-to-become-an-ebay-power-seller/

Or you can get it directly (and in full) from eBay's page shown in the link below:

eBay / Re: How do you become an eBay power seller?
« on: January 01, 2013, 10:51:45 AM »
New requirements went into effect this year. You must upload tracking within 1day and you must accept returns. I was always a PS and enjoyed my 20% discount of final value fees, but I lost it when this went into effect. Shipping within 1 day is no problem. Blind returns? No thank you. I mostly sell books and DVD's. Buyer would have 30 days to muck up a product while reading/viewing and ship it back.
I'm so relieved to have a brick and morter store now. eBay has gotten rough.

You are speaking of being a TOP RATED seller, not a POWER SELLER. They are two different things.

I am still a POWER SELLER based on volume and dollar volume, but I am NOT a TOP RATED seller. That is now called TOP RATED PLUS and as you said the requirements for THAT are a 14 day return policy and 1 day shipping.

Like you, the one day shipping is not a problem, though I usually cover myself with the 3-day processing option when doing a listing. It doesn't seem to affect anything really. My feedbacks when I get them often mention the fast shipping (1 day or 3 !) and the packaging and communication. Not everyone gives feedback though and I have stopped worrying about getting it so much. When you get into the the hundreds of feedback generally people will trust you.

I think another important thing is a sort of balanced level of feedback. That is, getting feedback on a regular basis shows you are an on-going seller, not just selling something once every 6 months or so.  My 900 plus feedback pretty much reflects a constant 10 or so feedback each month over the last 9 years.

****

Now, the LACK of having the TOP RATED (plus) designation means the LOSS of the 20% discount and of course that's a loss but not a terribly big one. On a $100 sale, if they charged you 10% for all fees that would be $10 and the 20% discount would be giving you $2 back or charging you $8.  SO..if you had 10, $100 sales you would lose a total of $20 in discount.

While the number of people that would take advantage of the NO QUESTIONS ASKED 14 day return would be small, I just can't see the benefit to me of letting someone use a $400 speciality item (tool or otherwise) for free for two weeks and then sending it back to me.  eBay and PayPal don't care; they're like stock brokers who make money no matter what the transaction is...it's nothing to them that you have to deal with a return.

Oops, you’re right. I had her mixed up with somebody else that is from California and lives in Florida with a similar screen name. LOL! The other person isn't even a member of this forum.

Will you be the better man and forgive me for my grave mistake? I do apologize and will try to be much more accurate with my posts in the future. I love everybody for the insignificant trait of being human, especially you MovieMan… :-*

Hey, I wasn't passing judgement, I was just stating a fact .... and remember "A man's reach should exceed his grasp, or what's a heaven for?"  ;D
