This is the fake part, lol! Without bothering to go into detail, there were some subtle changes that resulted in some cool finds. Ran the dvr back and forth several times to check and yes there were some add ins that weren't there the previous day. That is reality TV for ya. I have to say I watch the show in a whole new light after that experience. Ok, yeah maybe it's a little fake. Now if you want to talk about total fake, lets talk about Storage Hunters.....aaarrrggghhh

Thanks for the first-hand look at the filming process. Needless to say the time these things happen is an important part of the "setup" for our viewing pleasure.  ::)

I haven't watched Storage Hunters (and won't) but we musn't forget the crazy finds on Auction Hunters as well.  I think the end is near for all of them (within the next 12 months anyway).

Not sure what's going on, my first thought is the overall quality of the units up for auction might be dropping rapidly. I am wondering if more people are purposely leaving garabage in units to have auctioned off, if more managers and employees are pilfering the units before they auction them, or people making deals with managers to auction off there yard sale left overs, but the are more empty boxes in units, and less sellable goods in units it seems.

Maybe all of the above, but of course hard to tell which locker through which technique. I do know that the quality over all is DOWN and my one feeling (supported by auctioneers) is that more people are paying up rather than lose their lockers...and those would tend to be the better goods I would think.

After all when any of us see a listing for 15 and there end up being 7, what could we expect except that the 7 left are for the most part going to be trashy. Sure, MAYBE one of the 7 would be good, but the odds of much more than that being good are slim.

I heard about one place I missed a couple of weeks ago though  listing 3 and having 3 and they were apparently all OK lkrs. One went for $1000 and consensus was the newbie who got it overpaid by about half, but oh well.

Anyway, quality is down over the last few years and especially since December, 2010 when the tv shows started. I think we can legitimately blame the shows for letting people know their goods WOULD go to auction.

A tragedy here with something like 15 dead and 14 wounded including children.

The odds of a nut case striking anywhere are slim of course and to my knowledge this is the first case of any magnitude (at a movie theater) since shootings (gang related) in 1988 at showing of the movie "Colors".

My real question is this:

A wounded six year old is in the hospital. What parent takes a 6 year old to a midnight showing of a movie that features violent action sequences and violence toward other human beings?  No one deserves to experience the real life violence that (regrettably) takes place on a regular basis in our country (more than other countries) and of course no one could anticipate that such violence would take place at any given moment in any given place, but I don't think I've ever heard of an attack at a showing of "Toy Story" or "Finding Nemo".

My sympathies go out to all those affected by this tragic event.

Proving once again that some people have more money than sense .... a baseball cap for $125?   But congrats anyway !

Think I will stay from the coastal towns for a while.

But that's where the Storage War guys find all those rare surfboards !   ;)

So is anybody still watching this?

Nope, didn't go back to it. I saw some previews and even in those  the trades were obviously over the top, so I didn't go there.

Oh, I got  call from a guy about a slot machine I had for sale and he asked if I would consider a barter situation.
He ran off a list of stuff he had, gave me his address and said just call before you come.

The next day I called (he was supposed to be home all day) and his dad said he was at work. Called his cell phone and left a message I could come over anytime in the next 6 hours. Never heard from him again...so much for bartering.

The Lounge / Re: Sports Cards - Prefer local in East Texas

lol.  I figured it would be better to resurect this thread than clutter with a new one.

Mainly it gives people a chance to read up on your subject from the original perspective..and of course the answers and questions generated by your first post.

I saw a CBS news story on sports cards. A dealer at a convention said that some years ago it was common for he and others to have $3K to $4k days...now it's $300 to $400.

I once sold a Babe Ruth card for $1.00 to a fellow who was "developmentally challenged". He was happy as a clam for however long it took someone to show him the 1989 date on the edge of the card.

My other story is that a fellow was rummaging through a box of loose cards and one binder. I had looked a bit at them and the binder cards looked worth something, but they're not my thing. He said "would you take $100?" and I said yes without hesitating. Maybe they were worth much more, but I didn't care and still don't.

That sucks Movieman about not winning anything.  Think I'd of had to bid on the all bag locker.

Well, I don't know about it sucking. Fact is I could have bought any one of them...heck, I could have bought all of them, but to what end. A lot of work, some reward (unknown of course).  No, I think I did what I should have.

I worked in my permanent locker this afternoon...gave some stuff to Goodwill, threw some stuff away. Object to clear some space for some items I have in a temp lkr that ends Aug 15th. Nope, I have no regrets; as I said "picking" is looking better all the time and I have already stopped going to as many auctions as I used to. I think the handwriting might be on the wall...unless of course I find that "special" lkr ....one more time !   ;D

Went to three auctions today by the same auctioneer. He is the best of the 4 regular auctioneers so I asked him what the "trends" were right now.

1) Crowds about the same (that's not true in my area...they are smaller)
2) Prices about the same (again, in my area they are down)
3) Number of lkrs up for sale...DOWN.  (now THAT is true in my area)

He does more selling some distance away from me and his answers to the first two questions tell me to
stay away from there (too far for me anyway).

****
Meanwhile the units at the first place went for decent prices. First 3 lkrs were 5 x 10s and I started the last one at $100 after the  first two went for that. HOWEVER, there was one other guy there who loves to overpay and he did. I went up with him to $350 and someone else took over and the overpaying guy got if for $475.

The next place had 5 lkrs. Three by same owner but sold separately. The first one, 10 x 20 with about 50 garbage bags (dust covered) along one long wall. Other wall mixed bag. All looked old. Guy got it for $100...probably a good buy.

The next two from same owner were 10 x 30 and this time larger stuff. First one started out at a reasonable $100 but one of the year old newbies gave a $500 bid thinking he would get it. I knew for a fact he had $950 on him and that was his last bid as a newbie took it away at  $1000. Finally, mr. 950 got the next and last same owner lkr for $750.

All three were from an elderly woman who had put everything she owned in them, but nothing looked that great to me.
The only thing I remember was a little breakfast table (yellow formica, fold down leaves)...could have been worth a bit especially if chairs were in there, but nothing else great showing and a lot of broken wicker stuff and baskets.

****
Third place we went had 3 lkrs. First was mgr's mattress lkr (hooray !). Second and third, nothing special. So, with maybe 13 lkrs total at all 3 places, I bid on one and got none.

Have to say the "picking" is looking better all the time, but If I can get a really good one every two months + picking I would be happy. Been 2 months and 9 days since my last lkr buy.

Tuesday, 7/17/2012....

Two new episodes tonight:

2nd half hour…The Ship hit the sand.

Dave hasn’t been around for weeks, but he’s “baaaack” ! Oh no !

Unit #1….   Dave get’s it.

Unit #2….   Jarrod gets it. Dave calls it a pile of junk after bidding only $1600 on it.

Unit #3….   Brandon bids $275…gets it.

Dave’s lkr…over values them right off the bat.  Neon letters, spell…what?

Jarrod’s lkr…car parts…Mercedes !   Goggles with blue lenses. Brass blowtorch.

Brandon’s lkr…dad give the kid a hard time as usual.  Gets some “bad***” item coming back after the commercial…
Dave checks out his lettering….any of us just would have figured out what it spelled and figured it out ourselves. Letters are a “major” fad. I suggest they check definition of “fad”. Dealer teases him by saying $3K…then lowers it to $250.

Darrel gets African drum….any guesses on what it’s “worth” ?

Storage Wars Texas comes back August 15, 2012 !  Two new cuties to spark some interest in the male audience..that other bimbo is GONE !

Tuesday, 7/17/2012....

Two new episodes tonight:

In #1, Jarrod starts off by straddling two parking places....that's a pet peeve of mine...is your vehicle so
precious you have to do that...park across the stree where there are 200 empty spaces at the Target or K-Mart.
I sometimes do that...I don't mind the walk.

back later with some highlights.

They’ve added blue banner Tweet comments at the bottom of the screen…please, don’t need that. Is desperation setting in?

Jarrod gets one for about $2300. Barry gets one for $1. Highlight of Barry’s buy is him throwing stuff over his shoulder left and right, but I’m sure there’s something valuable in there.

So far I’ve enjoyed the Shingles Virus commercial more than anything else.

Small crowd today….would have been a good auction to go up against the crew !

Dave Hester went to a different city…got one for $1100…Didn’t show him saying “yuup”.

Jarrod and B look at their $2300 lkr.  Find $15 in change. Another $300 or so in a cheap black document box.

200 blankets…sell or donate..decide to donate.

Darrel checks out $155 lkr.  Surf board with imitation shark bit taken out of side. The usual surprise comes up after the commercial.

Storage Wars Texas comes back August 15, 2012 !  Two new cuties to spark some interest in the male audience..that other bimbo is GONE !

Finishing up the first half hour:

Darrel finds a skateboard. Value…$500. Brandon gets to order from the “big boy menu” today.

Barry takes a wooden Hispanic mask to an “expert”…value….$250 because it’s 60 to 80 years old.

Dave takes beaded purses to “expert” (who probably provided them in the first place)…value…$2100 or so total…give me a break (again!).

I'm just waiting for the episode when they find ...... the pistol used to assassinate Lincoln.  ::)

What, you missed that one?  Don't worry, it will run again along with the episode where they find the Carcano used by Lee Harvey Oswald and Hitler's little auto pistol (both of those were found in the same locker along with 20 bags of Walmart clothes).

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: High End Funiture
« on: July 16, 2012, 04:51:28 PM »
Yep, works for me. I'd rather have 10 photos in my eBay listing in a good size throughout the text than that many in their format, and at $.15 cents each (normally) over the course of maybe 30 or 40 listings a month (for me) over 9 years or so, that's a good savings.

As to the picture of the storage facility, it may not be a photo (as you are defining it) but it is still a picture.  ;D

Do a street map search of that address and you can get quite a real "picture" of the facility but until we can have live-time, 3-D with smells and sounds, we'll have to live with whatever representations we can get.
