Garage Sales / Re: Little traffic, but those that showed.....bought~

I don't know how my average price at flea will come out. I sell a fair amount of $20 to $30 items, but I DO sell $1 items as well, so we'll see. Just off the top I did $200 last Saturday and maybe had 20 or so transactions (unless I just plain forgot a bunch of smaller ones) and that works out to $10 a transaction, so need some hard tallying to really figure this one out.

Went to two auctions today; same auctioneer.

First place had a crowd of about 20 with only 5 or so regulars. Rest new faces. Had 12 or so lockers. Half of them were trash. Other half OK and prices pretty much OK. I didn't bid on anything.

The best one had a bright yellow Matco tool box about 4 feet wide 2 feet deep and 4 feet high. Maybe 10 drawers; a good looking tool box and aside from the yellow its most distinguishing feature was.....the black vinyl rails on the drawers were DUST COVERED.....BUT....there were two sets of disturbed dust on each grip...where you would put your left and right hands to open a wide drawer. Each drawer had this pattern.

The other notables in this locker were 3 hard case guitar cases, 3 amps, Fender and Marshall brands.

Go ahead and guess what this sold for...10 x 10 with a dismantled keyboard as well and maybe 6 totes.

*****

The next place had double the crowd but only the same regulars, so 50 people and 45 newbies.  Again 12 lockers and prices were OK but nothing special in content. I bid on one 5 x 5 because it  had a heavy duty plexiglass display case I could have used.  Started it at 100 or so and it quickly got to my 200 limit,  but I thought I owed an obiligation to the industry so I took the newbie up to $475 and let him have it. Alls fair in love, war and storage wars. Less cash for next time and might even be a lesson in being more cautious.

I would have put them on eBay at $100 or $150 and watched what happened.

OR

I would have put them on eBay at Buy It Now for $400 (and accepted best offers). You can set that to automatically accept at a figure you determine, or you can just see what they are offering and make counter offers.

In my opinion, eBay can't be beat for the audience it has for specific items like that. What other venue would pop that name up and give "x" number of would-be buyers a chance to look at and bid on them?

50 comics in a stack don't take up much room, and if you're not hard up for cash, why not hold on to them for awhile.

Garage Sales / Re: Are Yard Sale Customers Really That Crazy?
« on: July 09, 2012, 10:17:26 AM »
Story #2...not a yard sale (as I don't do them) but a storage facility had a "yard sale" for its customers and since I bought a lkr there and rented it during that time it was great for selling big stuff out of the lkr without moving it somewhere else.

This was the great lkr I got maybe a year and a half ago that had a big gun safe in it.

Old fart walks around it, opens, closes it, pushes it to see how heavy it is.

I'm asking $600. It has a brand new lock as I had to have a locksmith open it for me (just over $300 labor/parts).

So the guy says "Will you take a quarter for it?"  Took me a second to figure this meant $250.  But I restrained the laugh. "Nope, but I'll take $500"... I couldn't come back with "I'll take a half."

Anway, he scoffs, backs off and comes back half and hour later and offers $400. Sorry, I'll take $500.

So he goes away. Sold a few days later for $500 to a guy who came and loaded it up and took a BIG weight off my shoulders.

Old farts, go away...DON'T come back another day.

Yep, as a corollary to "are CL customers really that crazy?".... there are definity more than a few out there.

But where would we be without the crazies.

On Sunday the 8th of July I visited an antique flea and was there from 12 to 2 visiting a vendor friend.

Fellow came up and said "Would you take $5 for the pitchfork?"

My friends response was "Well, let's see, I'm asking $15. Let me think about it for a moment. No."

While it's mostly the norm for people to make an offer that is less than the asking price, if they want it they typically wouldn't go THAT low. When I offered that "He might split the difference with you" the customer's response was "Hey, it's the end of the flea today."

This was not some old fart (who often offer such deals) but an early 30's guy and someone who could have afforded $10 or $7.50 but maybe wanted it for $5 because he knew someone who would pay him $10 to $15 for the item.

Or maybe he was just cheap...that happens too.

****

Bottom line, it takes all kinds.  I'll end this one and add one more in the post below.

Always nice when things work out !

Number of customers sounds pretty good and of course the bottom line...how much cash comes in...was great !

In my never-ending quest for statistics, I'm thinking of at least counting the number of transactions I have at my Saturday flea and then divding the income by that number to see what my average sale figure is. Only takes a few $25 sales (or a $100 sale) to skew things, but would be of interest anyway.

Extension of that would be to tally the number of people who stop by and at least browse, but now we're talking too much bookkeeping !

The above was spawned by a recent couple of reports by a flea friend who claimed to do $600 in sales of 50 cent clothing items (that's 1,200 transactions) !  My educated guess is that I have 25 to 50 cash transactions in a day for a typical income of $250 to $350, so a day or two of tallying will be revealing.

I'm the guy that bid squeezing that rubber chicken in that one episode.

This part I can almost believe.

I will have Brandy one day and when I hit that mment, I will squeeze that chicken to deathl  !

This will NEVER happen.

Great story Teacher !

Lots of details about the biz  and a couple of really interesting human interest tales as well.

And, as you said, there's still tomorrow !

Went to 2 of 3 auctions today...same auctioneer.  Crowd decent...maybe 25. Lockers not so good. I've gotten pickier about what I buy  though....most expensive ones were $300 or so. Both places had 5 or 6 each. Nothing special about any of them.

Liked seeing the crowd though...now if we could just up the quality of the lkrs.

Good lkr rockin' !

Funny how the sight of one little thing CAN lead to good things overall.

I once got a little 5 x 5 only stacked about 3 feet high in a U-Shape...paid $110 for it and was
getting the biz from other buyers, but it came out well.  Didn't have as many pair of shoes as you got, but the ones
it did have did well as did the other stuff. Quality will sell.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Clothes- how does everyone do?
« on: July 05, 2012, 05:35:00 PM »

Ull be out in two trips

Must vary by state or regional area anyway.

I have a friend who got a HUGE amount of clothes (all good quality) and he did well with the best pieces from $3 to $50 but when all THAT was gone he took a break from clothing and went with "the usual" stuff.

Then a few weeks later he came back with the leftover clothing. He has 18 tables and maybe 10 "z" racks for clothing to hang.

He put up 10 signs mounted to all his upright shade verticals.  "Clothes...50 cents each".  He sold what he claimed was $600 worth of those. Note I say "claimed"...that's 1,200 pieces at 50 cents each.  Have any of YOU ever sold 1,200 pieces of anything (aside from box lots of 50 of something) at a flea.

He's a nice guy, but I don't believe him for a minute...not to mention the following:

OK, I'll mention them...

1) he said customers then said "how about 25 cents each?"
2) he still had a ton of stuff when I went by later in the day.

*****

I only sell jackets in the wintertime....athletic team logo jackets, work jackets (Carhardt, etc), raincoats (dressy), ski jackets, hunting jackets, etc.  That works for me and and I can't go further. I sell garbage bags of clothes (cheap) to other dealers and let them mess with the "ropa, ropa, ropa !". (Remember, central California is also known as Mexico North).

Just my 2 cents.

Gratz Cobia on the 500.  Now to hit 1000 and up.  Don't think any of us will catch MovieMan...unless we start posting lots of nonsense and spam threads ;)

I was fortunate enough to have joined this forum "early" and it was easy to generate threads about topics of interest.
Just about every aspect has been covered (at least in the basics), but I still see new threads (like this one) that pop up some new twist on either the business itself or related topics (flea, auction house, selling techniques, etc).

But enough of that. I have to go start a thead called: "Why I stay in this business despite the influx of newbies"....wait, that won't work...crowds are slowing down. How about: "At last crowds are slowing down...I can stay in the business."
