General Storage Auction Talk / Re: This Guys Reality.......

Is he's got too much crap and hasn't gotten rid of it!  LMAO!  This is a current ad I just pulled of CL a couple of minutes ago:

3 storage units in my garage - $1000 (monroe)

Date: 2012-02-20, 9:18AM PST
Reply to: [email protected] [Errors when replying to ads?]

i bought 3 storage units,,my garage is full,,theres no junk at all and money to be made,,u will need a truck, for theresa few loads everything is in boxes,,too much stuff to list,,my garage is 28x48 and one side is full,,all the stuff is nice,,n worth the time n money,,1000.00 firm on my price,,ideal for second hand store,,or garage sale n swap meet,,i race n my rig is buried n race seasons startin up,,i need my rig n garage back,,,425-422-

He actually might have bought 3 lockers too, but what I find interesting that he says one half of the garage is FULL of the stuff in boxes, but then he says his racing rig is buried beneath it. That DOES take a fair amount of space out of the equation.

He could have his own little auction .... might do OK that way.

In the bottom of a bag I found a broken Nintendo-ds-lite.  Listed it on ebay for an opening of $4.99.  Already has a bid with watchers.

Your recent sale of that broken Lite put me on a new eBay track. An $18 sale on a maybe $1.00 listing is a good return for something that would "never" sell at the flea, but makes sense that almost everything can be repaired by someone who has the specialized knowledge to do that and the place to find those folks would be eBay for sure. And it's easy to ship !

Craigslist / Re: Are CL buyers really nuts or what?
« on: February 20, 2012, 09:29:21 AM »
I WILL give the majority of CL buyers some credit though....Maybe three times a year I sell a big ticket item in the $300 range to people who typically have driven 100 miles or so to buy it...this is an item that retails in the $1,000 range and is hard to come by on any regular basis at the price I am asking. Pushing it's price to $500 or so might work, but the price I have determined seems to work well and others who list this item seem to persist in trying to get more out of them than I do. Of course those other folks didn't get the item in a locker for "free" or "pick" the item from some poor schlub who doesn't know what he's got.

I listed a nice TV stand (glass and metal modern design) for $100 (the kind Best Buy sells for $180+) and was just waiting for the guy to offer me $80 so I could turn him down.

Instead (after mind-numbing minutes when he didn't say anything and just kept running his fingers over the next-to-new surfaces) he dug in his pocket and pulled out $80 and said "here's 80" and then got in his billfold and produced the other $20.  He just didn't have the guts to even make the $80 offer though in my mind that was clearly his intention from his actions.

Even if you are a "new" seller of used goods, you typically have more knowledge about this business than the average buyer, and I stand by my credo that there is always another buyer (98% of the time this is true for me).

I would be careful with this. I personally live in Allentown area for over 5 years now yet still have my Chicago phone number. Number portability has made this a much more common occurrence. You could miss out on a lot of sales lumping all out of town numbers like that.

Not sure I understand what you are saying here (I highlighted those parts in red just above).

I don't think it would alienate anyone just by asking what city they are in; if it did prevent them from continuing to want to buy the item, oh well. Seems to me that items all sell eventually, and if they don't there isn't the market for them that I thought and they go to Salvation Army/Goodwill to handle.

So far (to my knowledge) I haven't lost any sales because I asked that question. In the last two years of all the people who have come to my storage to look at an item, only two have left without buying; I can live with that.

In regard to CL buyers being nuts (or what?).....

I haven't had much on CL for a month or so, but one item I had did draw what I would call a "not too bright" buyer and I have seen this before.

This hope chest is pretty large and at a good asking price...fellow calls and leaves his phone number with an out of town area code.

Once I get these types on the phone the first thing I ask them is what city they are in...sometimes I have already looked up the area code to get an idea before talking to them.

Anyway, this guy gets on the phone and YEP...he's 100 miles away and just gushing about this hope chest but when I get a word in edgewise and ask him when he would like to come over, it's all "uh, hm, I'm not sure when I can get away." At that point I just tell him to give me a call a day or so before he would like to come over. Last I heard from him of course.

****

An elderly woman (from her voice) called to ask if I would ship a $15 typing table to her 75 miles away. She said "It should only cost $10 or so"....yeah, right. Can YOU imagine shipping a typing table with two fold-up sides ANYWHERE at all, let alone for the the $15 asking price...MUCH more trouble than worth.

I guess it just gets down to initial excitement about an item with NO THOUGHT put in to the reality of getting it.

im confused...People go to auctions for different reasons, for resale, for personal gain, to fill their home. Bottom line is, the smartest, dumbest or the one with the most cash wins right?

All of the above, plus if you do this for 6 months or more and buy 10 or more units during that time you may have new thoughts about it.

Drew, be careful... MovieMan is looking to post XXX movies on your boards. Possibly inspired by some of the porn he found in a unit.  :P

Actually, there IS money to be made in porn, but there are so many providers of it on the internet I don't know what percentage of the biz a newcomer would get.

At the four fleas in my immediate area three of them allow porn to be sold in a booth that has no visibility from the outside and signs posted that say one must be 18 to enter.

The best flea does not allow it to be sold and that's the flea I sell at.  They called me on it one time when I had an issue of Playboy with Anna Nicole Smith on the cover...just after she died.

Sounds good !

As far as pics go, I save my pics to a place out on the web; I know the address to that spot and a particular pic and I use a statement that looks like this:

Edit: took out all the explanation I had posted earlier...too difficult to make it look like anything that could be understood. If I typed it the way it would actually be written, a picture would show up !

Basically you are using some basic html inside image brackets.

I do see people do attachments of pics to their posts, but since I use the other approach I've never learned how to do that here. It gives a small thumbnail which can then be enlarged. Maybe one of the other folks can help you with that.

WHAT A WASTE OF 30MIN

Well, since you're in broadcasting you know it's really only about 20 to 22 minutes of content and the other 8 to 10 is advertising; in this case we would have to say the commericals are more entertaining than the show.

So, maybe 66% to 75% wasted time if we give the commercials any credit at all.

Can anyone tell me where they have storage auctions in Memphis TN? or has anyone been to Memphis sales? I have never been to a storage auction but would like to try it. Thanks for any in put.

Look in the legal section of your local and area newspaper for lien sales. Look in those papers every day for two months.

Anyone interested in buying 1000s of cards?

I sell those long white boxes of cards for $5 each. If there's a $25 (or more) card in there its my gift of joy to the buyer, and 99 times out of 100 I would guess that is not the case.

Got a call recently from a friend who has pretty much stopped going to the auctions almost altogether due to the prices the units are commanding.

"What happened to you yesterday?"   Seems I had missed a set of 3 auctions by the same outfit. Somehow slipped through the cracks, but as we talked it turned out I had missed nothing really. Each place had started with 10 or so units and ended up with 2 or 3 and they were "nothing".

Continues the trend that apparently more people are paying up  (due to tv shows) and those seem to be the better lockers. Sure, there are still some good ones coming to the auctions, but not as many (IMO, IMA [in my area]).

MEANWHILE....

Picking is working for me. Good returns (some high) on hand-picked items. Fills the void between getting lkrs...any lkrs, average or great.

My friend has gone almost exclusively to picking and one other fellow has just started it too. We try to "outrun" each other at fleas (when shopping) and will take different rows if we think the other hasn't already been there.

Keep on changing with the market !

Dang~I opened a big ol' can o' worms~

 8)

For those falling on the side of felonies being committed (collusion, bid rigging) it reminds me of the facility manager who came by a lkr I had just purchased at an auction.  He started sputtering uncontrolably when he saw three propane tanks in the lkr.

He was incensed that the former owner had stored these illegal and dangerous items in HIS locker!  Call out the bomb squad !

Folks, it happens "felonies" and other "bending" of the rules.  Frankly, this fuss about bid rigging and collusion is rubbish (IMO).

'nuff said' as far as I am concerned.

I believe he is referring to this:
By having or making any agreements that effect the final price is collusion and bid rigging just as he said. It is also a felony crime.

Ok, you got me!  Do you want to put the handcuffs on in back or front of my body ?  That felony conviction sure won't look good on my record....oh wait, I have to get in line with bankers who made home loans with zero down to unemployed immigrants...like the ones who lived next door to me; were evicted; moved back in and squatted for 6 months before the home was sold at...AN AUCTION!
