Flea Markets / Re: First time out
« on: January 29, 2012, 08:14:24 AM »
In my experience Goodwill can be more expensive than retail at times.  If you can find a good yard sale sometimes you can score big for cheap and resell.

I have found recently that both Goodwill and Salvation Army (in my area) are doing research on the better items that look like they might be worth more...this would be on electronics, etc that I look at.

I found an item at SA that had a printout from the internet fastened to it. Internet price was $1,000. They had it stickered for $300. I went to the furniture section and sat down with my iPad and eBay showed one listed at $500 and it was the 2nd time around as completed showed it had not sold before at $500 and it was the only completed. I passed on that one.

*****
On the other hand at the SA daily auction of as-is items, I found an item which I got for $20 which I think I can sell for $80 or so. It is for owners of those big $250K to $500K motorhomes and sells new for $125 to $150.

I haven't been to one of those SA auctions for about 7 years, but have decided to start going for single items; the 4' square wire bins are of little interest to me.

Here's a pic of the crowd of 80 or so who were at 3 auctions I went to on the 26th.

Going to a lot of auctions today..home for lunch between some of them.

Auction A, B, C.  Auction B was a conflict of time with Auction C.

I went to C....only 10 or so bidders as I expected, but one of them has more money than sense.
The auctioneer is weird..he is the facility owner. He always asks his local mgr how much is owed on the locker.
First one, a 10 x 30 with doors at each end, owed $1250.

The bidder with no sense (who has never been here before) offers $750. I would have started it at $300. Then it goes up until the original bidder gets it at $850. Lkr was essentially 1/2 full but stuff was spread over the entire length and width only 3 feet high. He might break even or make a bit.

Next one goes for $500 (a 10 x 10) and pretty nice. Might break even or make a bit.

Next one goes for $500...(a 10 x 10) and not so nice...first bidder got it also, so now he is in 2 lkrs for $1,350 and that was it for him.  Next two lockers are trash and each sold for $250 or so.

My contribution to this auction was to run all these people UP, UP, and UP. May they learn a lesson from this.

***

Auction A (I heard) only had 40 people but prices were outrageous.
Auctioneer is a dips**t and got to Auction B 40 minutes late so I got to go to it.
Prices outrageous. Didn't have to run any of the 80 people there up...they did it to themselves. All 4 lkrs went to newbies at high prices.

***

Home for lunch and skipping 2 facilities with only 2 lkr each.  After that the next 2 are suppsed to have 15 and 17 each but we know how that goes.

****
After lunch: facilities D and E....I heard they did indeed have 2 each and all 4 were trash. I made the right decision not to go.

Facilities F and G (15 and 19 supposedly). F went down to 9....8 were trash; #9 went for $550 because it had one of those Little Rascal type wheelchairs in it with plastic still on the arms and seats. One guy claims he can get $500 for them (of almost any brand); a regular of the 8 years I've been active said he had 2 over the years and had one of them for a year before it finally sold for $200.

Facility G I got to late because I was actually MAKING money when an eBay customer drove 90 miles to pick up an item. The "G" group did come across with 14 lkrs. Ten had been done by the time I got there. One had gone for $500 and consensus was that was twice too high. The other 9 at that point had gone between $1 and $20...what does THAT tell you?  So, with 4 left, the next 2 were trash, then a 10 x 10 about 1/4 full with a big air compressor, pallet lifter, a few small tool boxes....went for $550.

So, I ended the day only having the joy of sending a few folks away with fewer bucks and some mediocre lkrs. The only place I even bid was the very first facility I went to with about 10 bidders...and it was still a bust for me. Oh well.

Finished cleaning out lkrs 3 and 4 of the 4 I bought recently and ran into the "newbie" couple who proclaimed
"oh no, this is our second lkr buy!".

While I was cleaning out four 5 x 10s they were still only half way done working on their one 5 x 10.

They had set up a card table and two folding chairs in the hallway, and each time I visited them during a 3 day period they were looking at dozens of little toys spread out on that table. The woman showed me a metal Hot Wheels type car (out of package) and said "I'll look it up on eBay and see if it's worth anything."

I maintained my composure and told her the only ones that are worth more than $1.00 are the redlines (and I explained that to her).

She also showed me a Star Wars toys in the shrink/cardboard wrapper and asked how much I thought it was worth. I told her I would start it at $8 at the flea and be happy to get $5. She was taken aback by that a bit. I guess I take such things for granted due to doing it for years.

Anyway, they are learning...but slowly. They plan to sell Saturday at the flea where I sell...be interesting to see their setup.

****
Meanwhile, van problems. Long story short, thought it was battery but think it is alternator or something. Trickle charge for a few hours. Runs all day, next morning is dead again. Sears said battery is fine, so has to be deeper than that. May have to rent a van for Saturday flea...lost last Saturday to rain.

Good luck MovieMan - but at the normal rate of payment now a days you may be down to 30-40 by auction.

You think?  ;)

Still that is a large number of units and sure to bring the crowds.

The first 2 have time conflict so I am going to try the less attended auction and hope to score there
while the mobs are at the other two.  After the first one I go to I join the mob.

Gotta try !

eBay / Re: What have I been waiting for?!?!

Good luck!!!!  now...if I could only find the motivation to get my stuff pictured/listed......

Yep, getting pics taken is half the battle for eBay !  I've got a set of vintage Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle sheets I should get on though.  ;)

Thursday the 26th, 2012....will be going to 6 facilities with possible total of 60 lkrs. Should be able to get one wouldn't you think...we'll see !

2379
They should have a 2hour special behind the scenes and show the business from buying to selling.

I would watch that!

A lot of us would, but don't hold your breath while waiting for that to happen !

2380
If it showed how much work goes into cleaning out, selling and profiting from the lockers...no one would watch.

Maybe that's why they haven't taken repeated suggestions by me and others to show cleaning out, dump runs, etc.  ;)

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: What was he thinking?

The only thing I can think of is he's a guy that fixes tools or in construction and he saw something I missed. For all I know, that "scrap wood junk" coulda been rare  bamboo hard wood, hand grown by monks in the 15th century......

I liked your wood "guess" because it brings to mind one of my pet peeves in this business.

It is an expression used (mostly by newbies I think, but sometimes by old-timers) and that expression is "You never know".  Here is a definition of the word "never":

Definition of NEVER

1: not ever : at no time <I never met her>

2: not in any degree : not under any condition <never the wiser for his experience>

The fact is that even a newbie should know that the word "never" is very exclusive and therefore can't be applied to the storage scene.

I believe that the "not under any condition" applies here. If you see a 5 x 10 lkr that is piled up soft-looking black bags with loose clothing or blankets, soiled mattress covers, etc sitting on top, etc. it's a pretty safe bet to say "There are no gold bars (or other things of value) in there."  To say "You can never tell" about a lkr like that (or other lkrs of similar persuasion) is just plain ignorance...in my humble opinion...based on what I have seen over the years.

The likelihood of that wood being anything special is next to none of course and the more plausible explanations for this bidder's performance are many, but then..."you never know". (gag)

I dont do any research on the show! Saw the prep that comes in the radio station and there was a story on storage bors.

I THINK (just my opinion) that he was commenting that BY NOW everyone knows the SW participants are paid for their efforts, that they are bidding with those paychecks and that there is some staging of the units they buy.  If it is true that most of us believe that, then this is beating a dead horse.

That said, I still enjoy bashing the finds they get and the prices at which they place the values. Still, the show is entertaining for what it is and a couple of the characters are entertaining as well.

Here is the video on glendons source.
feature=uploademail I will track down my source that was emailed to us at the radio station when I can. But for know watch the video .

Guess you missed the sarcasm in my comment about The National Enquirer. It ranks right up there with Glendon Cameron videos in my book, but to each his own.

Flea Markets / Re: Weather conditions
« on: January 25, 2012, 08:02:50 AM »
You should do some sells just to the regular vendors.  They will be picking you over before you even get setup normally.

Some of the regular vendors at my flea market sell to other vendors, but I've pretty much found that counter-productive. Why would I knowingly sell an item to a local vendor so HE an turn around and sell it to the end-user for more money?

If I sell an item to HIM for say $5 when I thought I could get $10 to $12 for it from an end-user, it just doesn't make sense to me. Sure I may have to bring it out a few times, but how much effort does that take.

THE EXCEPTION TO THIS (for me)...is selling an item to a vendor who I KNOW sells out of town (50 to 100 miles away). I sold a nice set of old theatre posters (Our Gang) to a guy for $50...he'll take them 100 miles away where he will get $100 for them, but he will have made a big round trip and paid $135 for two car parking spots to do so. I will never be selling there.

Another fellow buys collectible lighters, old military stuff from me, and if I'm not selling it on eBay I will sell to him for less than I would the end-user so he can drive 50 miles and sell it for 1.5 to 2 times what I am selling it for to him.

******

On the other hand I love picking items from vendors who aren't too sharp in the research and pricing area, especially on some electronics and specialty tools. Buy it from them for $5 to $10 and sell for $15 to $100. I bought a gps from a guy for $5 and sold it on eBay for $65. That's a nice markup.

Sorry, MovieMan, but my post was directed at bwd. He has over 250 posts on this forum and 235 of them are reports bashing SW with info he has researched, from ratings to contract info, to who knows what.

Just seems like a lot of time and effort on something he claims he hates.

Yep, I realized that but since I spend a lot of time on the forum and review the SW shows I thought I would throw myself in with his lot just to be nice !  ;D

My only complaint with his posts is that he seems to NEVER cite a source...oh well. In reporting, attribution is everything.
