Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #1...January, 2012

Got 4 of the 12 lkrs at one facility today...all 5 x 10s...for a total of $225. Should double I think. Nothing special, but anymore the bread and butter stuff is what pays the bills...and they are easy cleanouts...no furniture.

One other guy got 5 I think (a newbie who I and others bid up and then bailed on).

One newbie and his wife were chatting me up and I accomodated them as they expressed an interest in some stuff I had just won. They won one lkr.  When I talked to them at the end they were prodding me (especially the wife) asking if I really ever got any good stuff. I gave her a couple of examples and told her the really good ones only happened about every 1 in 50 or so.

When she asked how many I had bought I told her..that took her aback a bit...but I reminded her it was over 8 years.
When I asked if this was their first buy, she piped up right away..."Oh no, this is our second!" I stifled my laugh especially when she said the first one was just yesterday!   ;D

Going to one auction today; 12 units; haven't had auction for a year ..... what's up with that?
Will report later on crowd and prices....not very optimistic about either.

Would it be possible to break down a mattress? I wonder how much effort it would take and if it would be worth it?

You have posed three questions and these are my three answers; others will provide their answers too.

1) yes
2) a lot
3) no

  3 mattress's would cost Me $ 150. to dump " Locally "

If I remember correctly you're somewhere in the northwest, and some months ago some new buyer was complaining she couldn't get rid of mattresses and I think she was in the same area.

SO, my question is....

...given those high costs for disposing of mattresses, what do people in your area do with them?  I guess if one lived in a rural area they could be burned or buried on private property, but for those who can't do that, what do they do...abandon them along country roads ?

Just curious as they go straight to the county dump in my area and are not extra cost, but in some metro areas in California they are billed at extra prices when taken to dumps.

I liked his bidding strategy, but I think it would leave me wondering if I could of gotten it cheaper. I'll admit it, I'm the type to bleed the bid out in $5-10 increments  :P.

This used to work for me...over a year ago!  No more. If there are any serious regular bidders there they will just take it on up $25 or more at a time. Also, some newbies will think..."Hell, if HE likes it at that price I think I'll bid too."

Anymore, I let the basic bidding start and come in late. Sometime works, sometimes doesn't.

The three auctions I went to today had a decent crowd (30 or so...6 regulars). Lkrs were nothing special. Prices OK, I just wasn't interested in the goods.  Regulars got some, newbies got some. I didn't even bid until the last facility and the next to last lkr. I went to $650 on a 10 x 15 and let the other regular get it for $675.

Always more auctions...three tomorrow in fact !

7) Box of same from above wrapped in bubble wrap, tissue, etc.  Get all excited and find they are the dollar tree crap.  Who wraps up $1 ceramic figurines.

So what all have ya'll found so far this month????

The $1 store wrapped items are always a disappointment, and sometimes after unwrapping 6 or so of 50 in a box I just stop and throw the whole thing in the trash...sure, maybe I threw way a Hummel in my rush, but I doubt it.

I thought my find of 250 or so VHS in my recent $400+ lkr buy was a lot, but only half your 500 find. What amazes me is that more than half of this batch didn't have the cardboard cover...just the black cassette. So if those are all on a shelf sitting on the short end, the name tags are the only scarce way to see what they contain. I still have a dozen or so old VHS from "the day" but they are all in their original sleeves. DVDs will soon be going away too (in next couple of years) as electronic delivery becomes more prevalent.

At my flea the clamshell Disney VHS used to sell (4 or so years ago) for $3 to $5, but even those hardly go anymore as only the poorest (or oldest) of buyers are still using VHS. Ever try to sell a VHS player for more than $5 ($10 at the most)?

The Mexicans at my flea sell VHS tapes for $.50 each and use up a whole 6' table laying them out wide title up. If they have 100 displayed they might sell 3 in a day...a whole $1.50....must be a better way to fill that space.

Best moment of the night:

After ripping a box apart to get at a sewing machine, Barry says "It's new... in the box"

Pan down to said destroyed box.   :D

Yep, pretty funny stuff. Actually, that would be a problem for you and I (torn box) but it really doesn't mean anything to him. He's in it for the fun at his age. Jarrod and wife are trying to make a living; Darrell's been doing it for years but probably still needs to make money at it; Dave ?  Wonder how his auction house is doing?  I like Barry and Jarrod/Brandi the best.

Going to 3 auctions tomorrow with a total (maybe) of 18 lkrs at three facilities.

The $400+ locker I got the other day is marginal at this point. Thought I might get $200 profit out of it. If so, it will be close.

Where the heck is Jarrod?

Good question ! Maybe episode 2 will provide the answer. New store addition might be the answer too !

Right on both counts...they are in the 2nd half hour and Brandi mentions time off after grand opening.
Wish I could call locker buys that accurately.

****
Crew has grown to 5 with Nabila in the mix...tonight's secret words..."bid them up!". Only Jarrod and Barry
didn't engage in that...the rest were vicious.

Barry says: "I've seen better wares beneath the freeway."  Next week the promo shows him taking a sledge hammer to a 2 foot square safe. Good luck Barry!

***
Darrel..if you're reading this (HA!) I got one of those same blow guns in a locker. Think I sold mine for $15 at the flea...I could tell it was a tourist item.

Thanks for the info guys! I did a lot of searches and reading posts on here (awesome forum, BTW) but couldn't find any real answers as far as opened lockers.

Try typing "lock cuts" in the search area. One thread 6 or 7 down would be a good one to read...or read them all !

Tonight, Tuesday, Jan 17, 2012 there are two new episodes and the plan tonight is to just watch them
and not summarize or review them unless something just jumps out as being noteworthy !

Now to watch.  ;D

Nabila needs a lesson (after 20 years) in what an old flinklock stock would look like. I could tell it was an imitation afrom 10 feet away on my tv screen, and apparently the words "Hollywood, CA" on the metal work didn't mean anything to here either...what a ninny !

Barry strikes it rich with old art work. You go Barry !

Welcome....

I'm sure one of the members here will answer your question, but in the meantime, let me suggest using the SEARCH button toward the top of the screen for quick answers to many questions. Typing in something like "dump runs" will pop up many threads and posts about that subject or any other you are curious about.
