General Storage Auction Talk / Re: iPad for research at remote locations
« on: December 06, 2011, 07:59:23 PM »
Should be awesome for research.Could make a big difference.

Here's the REST of the story.

I have been researching Ipads for about 6 weeks. About 10 days ago I had my hands on a piece of electronics that looked OK, but nothing special, no meters, etc. I put it down and didn't even ask how much it was. I thought I MIGHT be able to get $20 for it and if I got it for $5 or $10 didn't seem worth the trouble.

A few days later I look at one of the regular's "picker" type eBay listings and there is this item sitting with several bids at $100 !

A few days after that I couldn't resist and looked at it the completed item. It sold for just over $300 ! (kicking myself here).

This is when I made the decision to get the Ipad. If I had had it when I saw the item at the flea I probably would have bought it after doing a search right there in the field. That item alone would have paid 3/4 of the cost of the Ipad, OR 20 months of data service.

Now I am hoping to find one really good item like that a month...that would be enough to make me happy !

We bought 2

Sounds like overall you'll do fine...works that way more often than not (one making up for the other).

I went to 3 auctions today...same auctioneer.

Crowd AND prices were pretty good. There were about 6 regulars and the other 15 or so were new. The contents at the first place were pretty junky, but I sprung for the first one...$30 for a five by 10 about 1/2 full...I need the totes I saw and maybe the contents will work out.

Second place still kind of junky, but a little better. I got one 5 x 5 for $110 with very clean looking boxes. Got in afterwards and it's coming out pretty good...45 DVDs (like new) and one box set of 7 that should go for about $30 or so. Should make some money on it.

Third place had 2...2nd one was 10 x 30 and half full, but telling clues were those galvanized metal a-frames used for flea markets and the planks they put over them. Went for $210 and that was an ok price. I only was interested in a couple of the display pieces but the fellow who got it probably won't sell them to me at a decent price.

Crowd and prices good....wish it would stay that way.

What's your preference?  Turn and burn or quality over quantity?

Both.

General Storage Auction Talk / iPad for research at remote locations
« on: December 06, 2011, 09:13:33 AM »
Took the plunge and bought an iPad !

I bought a refurb from apple with 32gb, wi-fi + 3G.  My primary use will be for doing item lookups when I am at fleas and estate sales and yard sales.

Already seeing difference in typing...I am using hunt and peck here!

*******

Have downloaded Netflix and eBay apps. eBay app looks great...easy to use full version. Can watch my Netflix instant stuff anywhere.

So far using my home wi-fi net but will order $15 AT&T data plan today with 250mb a month--all I think I need and is month to month.

iPad users---let me know what works for you.

If the auction starts at 10 and it takes you 30 minutes to drive there you would have to call about 9:20 right?

When I talked to Bubba from the cast of Storage Wars Dallas, he said that the show will premier in December, but does anyone know the specific date?

Yes, the first Dallas episode is Tuesday, December 6, 2011 after the regular CA episode.

Unfortunately I work full time M-F so I can't attend the week day auctions in the area. Looking forward to this forum.

Well, you can enjoy the forum anyway and for sure there are people who wish THEY were as unfortunate as you to be working full-time.

Yes, do what virtually everyone else here does...look in every newspaper you have available to you. Check the legal notices every day for a month or more. You'll find auctions to go to.

Don't you think we should ask the folks from Auction Hunters to show us some of the footage of the storage units they never struck it rich with.  I mean come on these guys are pulling the wool over our eyes.  They should have some footage to show if they buy 150 units per year and the show is only of the best ones.  Lets see the blooper wheel.

I think 1/3 of the 20 minutes of content should be the bad lkrs. The reality would be having 15 minutes of bad lkrs and 5 minutes of good lkrs...now THAT would be reality tv.

Should use the Plug section.

And WOW $200 Deposit !!!!

Surprised you have not been moved to the plug section. But, you COULD provide some perspective from the property manager perspective...why not start actually adding some useful thoughts?

Also there is at least one website on the internet that is dedicated to the prop mgr side.

One of the first units i saw had  a radio in it.... I wanted to bid but I  dicided I wasn't going to bid until I got the hang of it.  I wasn't sure what it was.  After it drove me crazy all day I did some research.  It turns out it was a rare sony shortwave radio crf-320, Sells on ebay for over $700.00.  And yes the locker went for $80.00.  OMG!

Check out this more recent sale. It won't make you feel any better.

The Lounge / CQ, CQ, calling all ham radio operators !
« on: December 04, 2011, 09:35:01 PM »
OK, don't know if CQ is still the way to go about it, but I'm looking for ham radio enthusiasts.

Been many years since I had a bit of interest in being a ham, but the other day I got some OLD 2 meter equipment at an estate sale, and I've been looking at the internet and wondering if I really need to pursue yet another interest.

The gear is NOT Yaesu, not even close, but if anyone responds here, I'll provide details.

I did a search for ham radio and only 1 of 2 threads that popped up had responses. Craigs.... and Vince were the two people who had some ham connection and I would guess that of the roughly 2000 members here there are more than that.

Any one want to talk in a way I can understand ?  73 !
