The Lounge / Re: Hoping everyone out West is Safe

Sending our thoughts and prayers out to those effected by the Hurricane force winds.

Maybe there some bad winds I haven't heard about, or the networks picked the most extreme examples to show on TV, but in the central valley they weren't that bad. A week or so ago they were worse especially in southern CA.

In my area at the Saturday flea, I saw one pop up canopy go flying (I don't think the new vendor had it weighted at all).

It was blowing pretty consistently, but every once in a while a gust game through that blew stuff off the table.

I had not set up my Caravan (10' square) because of the winds. It was standing behind my van and I had spread the legs a bit so it presented a balaned 2' footprint. Heard a big crash...wind had blown it over.

Wind DID affect sales I think. Crowd was pretty good, but a lot of people were griping about the weather so some probably just stayed at home.

By the way if you buy a Caravan (especially used) check the legs to see if they are steel or aluminum. The one Costco used to sell was steel. I got one with aluminum legs in a $25 locker.  It's a LOT lighter. Also their website is great. I had to replace a couple of parts...total was about $20 shipped. They are the Cadillac of canopies. (I also have the typical WalMart .... easy-up or quick-shade I forget which but hardly use it unless I need two on a hot summer day. )

My aunt just recently got a unit that had two trucks full of cards.

That's a lot of cards especially if one of the trucks was a box truck !  ;D

Very interesting responses. Is there anyone out there who was doing this big time before the TV shows? If so, do you resent the influx of particpants from infulenced by the shows?

Money4nothing's only been doing it for 6 months or so and SHE sees the impact of the shows.

I know people who have done it for the last 15 or 20 years...imagine THEIR feelings about the shows.

I've been doing it for 8 years (see my signature below) and I harbor some resentment, mostly for the lookeyloos (who never bid but eat up pavement time) and for those newbies who bid outrageously, paying $750 for a locker that has maybe $300 or so of sales inside.

But, I'm adapting and persevering. Many drop out and eventually all who are not serious will be gone.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Finding Storage Auctions In Local Newspapers
« on: December 02, 2011, 09:24:39 PM »
eskimo1817,

Let's see, you want to know if there are auctions nobody else  knows about so you are the only bidder or one of very few bidders. That would be pretty advantageous, wouldn't it? Considering, all the active members of this forum are out to make a buck, why would they tell a complete stranger their trade secrets if they had such a source?

Good luck on cornering the market on auctions! ;D

Both Craigs...and javawriter gave you the answers I would have provided.

Ok I will respond... been trying to avoid it... HAHAHAHa

The stupid show did it for us thanks to Netflix... No Cable TV here... And we got to see it.

You are forgiven (especially since you live in Florida and pose no immediate threat to California!)  ;)

can anyone give me some info on how to find auctions that other people dont know about?  specifically in okla??

I can't believe you asked this question. If you want to know why I can't believe it, some of my colleagues on this forum will be sure to answer you. I don't have the time or patience for it at the moment.

The Lounge / Re: Where can I sell these ovenmasters
« on: December 02, 2011, 04:04:51 PM »

They look like old ovens, Are these worth anything?
Where can I find the value of these type of items?
and in what store would i be able to sell it?

Please help.

Thanks
Jags

Yes, they are worth something.

Start with Google and eBay since you have clear (searchable) information.

You could sell them on eBay.

Hope this helps!  I would answer those questions specifically, but then I would have to charge you for the research time I would spend and you don't want to pay what I charge !   ;D

Garage Sales / Re: This is how we made money with Garage Sales.
« on: December 02, 2011, 08:59:30 AM »
I hate to say it, but if you want to be successful in this business you have to diversify. You can longer count on one source for your product or one avenue to sell product.

1) Why do you hate to say it ? It's good advice and anyone who has been selling since BEFORE the tv shows has had to diversify.

2) Resurrected a 9 month old thread !  Yikes  !

I got a new one!

Think about the promo: Scruffy guy in overalls with a big hose sucking the poop out of a port-a -john, and then he sees something shining at the bottom. With his big plastic gloves he scoops it out, Holy Crap! It's a $10,000 gold and diamond tennis bracelet!

Laughed out loud at this one !   ;D

The sad part is, this series would probably work.  ???

Just watching a couple of episodes of Gold Rush....at least now it is more interesting with 3 crews working 3 claims.

The Hoffmans....what clowns. Now they are doing something they should have done last season...doing core samples to see if any ore exists at the bedrock level. Listening to "Jack" speak is worse than fingernails being dragged down an old style chalkboard !  >:(

The kid seems the sharpest of all of them and I find it hard to believe "grampa" will be ruined if the kid fails.

"Dakota Fred" thought he was hot stuff taking over the Porcupine Creek claim from the Hoffmans, but now Fred is having equipment problems too, AND is house back in Dakota has been flooded out !

Just like in the old 49er days the ones making the most money (so far) are the equipment dealers who are taking bucks from the 3 crews like nobody's business !

You're getting all formal on us MM.

To cross threads for a moment, maybe we can get a reality show about the naming of the new lookie loo's thread.  ;)

Why not, there's a reality show for every friggin' topic under the sun!

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Lookey Loos Part 12.....December, 2011
« on: December 01, 2011, 01:11:08 PM »
What a disastrous start to December, 2011.  ???

Went to what was to be #2 of 4 or so today by same auctioneer.

First one cancelled, nobody thought to tell anybody.

Second one had 60 people with only 8 regulars.

First couple of lkrs were owned by same person who supposedly was a collector (this from the mgr partner who looks like a meth addict).

Well, some folks took him at his word. First 5x10 looked like a pile of trash 5 wide by 10 deep (front to back) and 4 feet tall. I swear, nothing looked good. Sold for $750 to a six-month regular who is opening a store at end of May, 2012....at least they'll have time to sort out the trash.

Next one (same owner) same look, same size sells for an even $500 and thinking back on it, the guy who got it was in the bidding for the first one too...I think the $500 guy was just bidding the first guy up and THIS TIME got stuck with it. One of the perils of doing so....got to be able to read these folks or you get stuck.

In my opinion they both got stuck. I would have paid $100 today for either of the lkrs; Last November (BS...before shows) these would have gone for $100 max and more likely $50 to $75.  Oh, well.

This also stopped me from going on to the next couple of places today.

Sure, shoot us a link and some lkr numbers.

Well a month goes by and we return to the same facility for another auction. Where is casino gamblin' newbie #2? Nowhere to be found. Don't worry, #3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,etc... have all showed up for this one.

Yep, that EMPTY big screen box took care of #2. But as you said there are always a hoard of others waiting to win their first EMPTY box too, so on we go.

A similar story is this one:

A regular told me he went to a site (which I stopped going to about 3 years ago) and since he is a friendly guy and on good terms with the manager, was asked in to see their new big screen tv. In he goes to their apt behind the counter and sees "Gizmo Deluxe 42" LCD".

Later the auction begins and low and behold there in one of the lockers (prominently displayed) is a "Gizmo Deluxe" sealed box.

Now whether the tv was there and pulled out by prop mgrs or that they placed the box there after buying the tv at a store, the fact remains that fraud was in the works.
