Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Lookey Loos Part 11.....November, 2011
« on: November 29, 2011, 07:16:41 PM »
Went to an auction recently with 25 lkrs advertised and 25 sold.....BUT....

This is one of those auctions where they pull the items out into the aisles while keeping the buyers back.
Then you get to come under the ropes and walk around in a long circle of "stuff". Each item (or small group) is then
sold...you hold up your bidder number if you win.

Takes a while for each lkr, so for 25, this took from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

I have recently been buying more single items at estate sales and such so this is a good chance to pickup on single items. But, I only bought 3, $5 items and didn't make any good scores really.  Most of the lkrs and stuff in them are poor quality due to the area, but I have gotten a few good items here. There is also a 15% buyer's premium.

The Lounge / Real Deal TV Show (what the heck ?)
« on: November 28, 2011, 11:25:02 PM »
OK, maybe I'm just a dummy, but why in the world would any seller take an offer from the "dealer".

The premise is this:

You bring your item to a "dealer" (They had 4 in the episode I watched).  Let's say you wanted $1,000 for your item (whatever it was). The "dealer" would typically offer you $300 or so. These guys had pawn shops, etc.

If you didn't want to take their "cash money" right then, you could take your chance at an auction. I think the dealers were in one state and the auction might have been in another in some cases.

The parts I watched (while working on my laptop) invariably showed the item bringing more at auction.

****

When you think about it, why wouldn't they. The dealer has to lowball you so he can sell it and make a profit.
At least at the auction you are going to get closer o what you want, even after commission (which they never mention of course...I guess they think we poor dumb slobs just imagine they do it for free.)

***

Anyway, I watched it once and I won't watch it again unless one of you can convince me I missed something.

you forgot the 10 - 20 % premium charge some auctioneers do.

Yes, and I'd LIKE to forget it altogether. So far I haven't bought one at a premium auction. When a lkr goes for $1k that's a heavy $100 to tack on to it. So far the only auctioneer who is doing that is doing it at Extra Space. If it's a dynamite lkr it wouldn't be a problem though. If anything that premium might make me take closer looks than I sometimes do.

Dang MovieMan the last 5 posts I've read of yours have had the words 'search button' in them  :D

You think that's bad....I haven't mentioned the "newbie" who asked if I would help him clean out a locker. I nearly broke my back falling down with laughter !

Movieman, I have read several of your replies and posts. You cease to amaze me with your words of wisdom.

Guess I'll have to try harder !  ;)

I was wondering if anyone is willing to share their items bought/sold tracking log.  I'm in the process of formating an excel spreadsheet to keep better stats on my items bought and sold, but I figured I would save some time by asking the group.  I remember seeing one on here before, but I cant find the post.  Thanks for your help.

Yep, you could save time, but you're using up my time.

Go to the search button and type in "Excel".  Your answer is in the 4th item down if you do this search today, Monday, November 28, 2011.

It is reply #151 in a long-standing thread.

By the way, the "search" advice I just gave you is what I have been doing for another "new member" here, but he has NINE posts !  ;)

.... should someone feel guilty about making a profit off of someones elses life?

You can "feel" any way you like....that is up to you.

The people who should feel guilty are the "robber barons" of the 21st century who take outrageous bonuses of $2.5 million because they did such a good job of charging $3.99 a gallon when they could have taken a bonus of only $1.5 million and let us pay $2.99 a gallon.

You own everything in the locker and it is your job to clear it out. There will be dump fees as well as the price of the locker. Keep that in mind while bidding.

OK, I'll be helpful to the original poster and add that he might want to also consider knowing about:

1) deposits
2) sales tax

And again, using the search button will give you many links to threads which have discussed these topics many time over in these threads.  ;D

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Anybody else wearing $525 long johns?
« on: November 28, 2011, 08:40:01 AM »
I think most of us save something out of a good unit for ourselves.

I also give myself physical monetary credit for those items in my spreadsheet record.

Recently I decided I wanted another cordless phone for my home. I get them fairly regularly in lkrs, but they are not always good ones, and sometimes the batteries are about shot and they don't hold a charge very long.

Instead of buying a new one for maybe $30 to $40, I wait for a good one to come up in a lkr and then if it sells for $30 new I give myself $15 credit for it...this brings the cost of the lkr down as far as I'm concerned, so if the lkr cost $100, I now have only $85 invested in it and it pays itself off that much faster.

I wouldn't call it a $100 phone (though the $500+ long johns are a cute idea) but I am still happy with it !

Thank you for your gracious welcome to a newbie.

For those of you who have been on this forum for a while, it may be intuitive as to how to get information, but it is not obvious to me.

As for my user name, it refers to me being a high school computer sicence teacher. I don't offer or provide any "service" to anyone for Java writing, although, if your kids need help with their comp sci homework, I think that I can spare a moment to give a courteous response.

Movieman: Thanks for the suggestion regarding the search button. If I am unsuccessful in locating  the information I seek, I may PM you (if that is possible in this forum).

As a computer science teach at the high school level I'm sure you've talked to students about doing research and the computer tools for doing it...and the satisfaction achieved by doing that work yourself.

As to providing a courteous response to a newbie's request, consider my response as "tough love"...this is nothing compared to the reality of the auction world, both dealing with old-timers many of whom will not suffer newbies lightly in their many questions.  It is also tough love as regards the hard physical work involved.

There are other teachers on these forums, some of whom do a bit on their off-class time and in the summers if they are not teaching then.

Teaching is a respected profession (at least in my book) and you are admired for doing that. Now do right by this "profession" as well and you will truly be welcome here...by me...and others.

You could also read about "partners" in the following three threads which go back aways in our brief one year history on this forum:

I found the following by typing in the word "partners" after pushing the SEARCH button above:

No mercy! Brutal man brutal! :)

I just get tired of people not wanting to do even the most MINIMAL of work on their own. How much effort does it take to do a search? Hardly any.

If they can't do that here, how are they ever going to research the value of something?

AND, I may be wrong about this fellow just posting a few innocuous notes BEFORE he hits us up with Java service, and I will be the first to admit it if I am wrong, but I've done it before over the last 11 months and I don't recall being wrong, but I might have been and didn't know it, and there's always a first time.

whats with the double post?

Twice as much fun? :o

Suppose you buy a locker that contains an automobile, a boat( greater than 14 ft or with motor), or an outboard motor. In Texas, technically, all these require a title to transfer. Is the storage business required to obtain a title prior offering it for auction?

Once again, use search button above, or are you setting us up for a link to your Java writing service; if so, just post your PLUG in the appropriate thread (if you can find it without asking) !
