The Treasure Chest / Re: My first unit(s)

You never know.

I'm not really trying to rain on any one's optimism parade, BUT, I hear "you never know" so many times I just have to comment on it. People (most often beginners) make this remark at just about every auction I go to.

The fact is (in my experience) that most of the time "you do know".  "You do know" (or should) that most of the lockers will not be BIG money makers.

"You do know" that truly rare items will not be in any given locker; sure, they'll be in SOME LOCKER, somewhere, but the odds of any given person getting them are very low indeed.  The $500K pirate treasure was in one locker out of hundreds of thousands sold over the years as an example.

Regarding toys and the like:  Yes, there are people who want to relive their childhood or get a replacement soup toureen like grandma used to have and eBay is certainly the place to find those folks.

Here's an example of an old Captain Marvel keepsake. The poor captain never did make it big like Superman, but he is still trying.

Take a look at these two pins from 1948:

The first one listed below is for sale for right at $90 (buy it now)

The 2nd one is taking bids and with a few days left is at $10.50. Be interesting to see how it finishes.

Both pins are in the same apparent condition.

This is not always true. Some things are worth a good researching over. This is including some toys. Some toys that alot of people look at and say, oh, its only worth 50 cents to maybe $5. Then turn out it be worth some real money.

There are only  a few things that are "always" true.

Here are some of them:

The sun will rise and set each day.
Everything living dies.
You will not "always" buy a winning locker.

Well. I'm still up. TONS of coffee mug boxes to go through.

Well, maybe it's just me, but if you spend this much time (taking the photos of the "guitar" and I think even making and posting the youtube of it (your measuring tape?), then I think you may be overthinking the sales process.

If I had found this item I would have sold it for a $1 and been happy.  You must have tons of smalls in that locker and spending this kind of time on many of them seems counterproductive to me.

Of course if you just plain ENJOY IT that much, that's one thing, and maybe it's just beginner's enthusiasm at having all the goodies to work with in one way or another, but just seems overkill to me.

Coffee mugs? I can't give them away; maybe I'm not working hard enough at doing that...oh yeah, Goodwill will take them.

How many hours have you been up straight now...something like 36 or so.  What's the hurry? Get some sleep.

Your mom looks lost in that "cavern".  Looks like you'll both have fun and remember when you do score big like that ($3K) my estimate is that your next 49 lkrs will just be average !

I think i put this in the wrong place.  Mod, please move this to the appropriate section.

Thanks!

This thread is OK where it is I think....it's a story.....!

Looks like you did well on this one; you jumped in at reasonable high price for someone buying his first locker and looks like you called it right.

Now, you can expect the next 49 buys will be average, not spectacular !

thanks but dont you get that deposit back?

Yes, you do, but Malone is simply telling you that you have to account for that when making your bid.
If you brought $500 you could only bid $400 to $450 since you would have to pay the deposit as well.

AND, if you pay sales tax (which most newbies do) you have to account for that too, BEFORE you bid.

Not sure what I was thinking, I feel in a little over my head after just purchasing a pretty big locker tuesday.

My 'hope' is to leave them in the unit and sell them out of that, maybe to someone who will scrap them out for copper/cords etc.

If in my town they would sell to a recycler for .06 cents per pound. 100 pounds = $6.00.

Four would maybe weight 100 pounds.

Take that 4 computers into your 100 computers ....you have 25 batches of 4 at $6 per batch.....you do the math!

My place only lets you bring in something like 5 or 6 tvs/monitors per 2 or 3 month block of time though.

*******

Good luck selling them. You MIGHT get $10 in my area, but it would be the rare buyer who wants one. They all want the flatsreens and those are going at my flea for $30 to $50 depending on brand, size etc.

I do have more money that i can use i just dont want to go there with a lot of money and blow it all.  you think maybe i should bring 500?

Sure, bring $500 or bring $5,000. If you have it with you, you are ready for whatever comes up.

BUT, also be prepared not to get carried away with your bidding.

If you brought $500 and were OK to spend that much (based on your other needs for money) then there would be no problem. Also, it is very rare that you would lose ALL your investment if you made a bad purchase, so if you bought one for $500 and were only able to sell $350 out of it, you would be out JUST $150.

The same thing could happen to you if you paid $230 of course.  Just give the auctions a shot. Nothing says you have to buy anything at the first 10 auctions you go to. Experience is the BEST teacher in this biz.

i live in a gated community were we have a dump that we can use as much as we want , they have a fix rate that we paid one every 4 months in our dues.

Interesting gated community that has its own dump. Do you mean it has a "dumpster" that you can use?

In my area the houses inside a gated community start at $300,000 and you can bet that none of the owners are in the storage lkr buying business!

Any dumpster inside those gates will be at the golf course where the most use it will see is an old golf glove being thrown in with the lunch leftovers.

Hope you find something in there to break even.

Still looking break even; oh well, it happens !

*****

No auctions around my area for the next two weeks, so plenty of time to sort out stuff from two recent buys and get more stuff on eBay.

Good luck to everyone else over the next two weeks!

It's very common for the prop mgrs to cut locks and take overall pictures from the door (a wide shot). They then place a legal notice in a newspaper of record (or even a fickle nickle kind of paper). Typically the ad has to run twice before the auction date and typically that is in a two week period just before the auction.

They also send out registered letters to the lkr contents owner. They get those back if they are undeliverable by the post office.

Given all this there is no reason the frm contents has any reason to complain. If they didn't give the post office a forwarding address or a new telephone number, that is on them.

*****

Some prop mgrs may walk in the lkr and they may even open a box or two to see what's inside. Depending on how honest they are, it can go from there. Most will be honest and not take anything...others are not so honest.

Well, $230 isn't a lot to work with, but you might get a lkr for that full amount, or you might be able to buy a couple of smaller lockers for say $75 or so each.

BUT, at that price range you're not going to get much volume or quality, so don't expect much.

Once you actually GO to a couple of auctions you'll KNOW how far your money will go and what it will buy.
Please let us know your results when you come back to post in this thread or in the "lookey-loo" thread that is current when you make your first buy.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: An other stupid noob question locks
« on: November 18, 2011, 08:12:11 AM »
Five years ago I was lucky enough to buy 20 locks from a guy....NONE OF WHICH HAD KEYS !

There were 10 with a blue name on the side and 10 with a red name on the side. These have HEAVY DUTY shackles and my feeling was they were keyed alike because they came from a vending machine vendor.

I bought them for $10 for the 20 locks. Took them to a locksmith who fairly quickly was able to figure them out and make keys; one set of two keys for the BLUES, one set of two keys for the reds. Total locksmith cost was $25.

So a total of $35 for the 20 locks and of course the beauty is that all locks use the same key. No fumbling around to figure out which key goes to which lock.

I didn't need 20, so I sold 10 of them to one my cronies for $40 (dirt cheap for that many keyed alike locks !) and we were both happy.

Aside from the time I invested, I had 10 keyed alike locks for myself and I MADE $5 !

Hi all first post..

Looks like you have made out on the locker, but man you are crazy to leave the stuff on property for so long. That whole deal with the owner could have gone sooo much worse. I mean just think if it had been the ex BF that had come back wanting his stuff, thing can easily get nasty with that kind of situation.

Actually, since the ex boyfriend was on the contract, the last time they paid it up, he got all his tools and good stuff out of the front of the locker before it came up again for sale. HE was smart; she wasn't.

If you need to keep the stuff in a locker as you go through it, you are better off just moving it to another storage facility, as it will offer you much more protection if the owner decides they want stuff back.

Thanks for the advice, but having done this for eight years and almost 400 locker buys, that's not news to me. The guns went home right away; the 600 pound safe was in no danger of being stolen; flat-screen tv and any other small visible stuff went home with me.

Additionally, the facility is well alarmed, cameras all over and resident manager in a nice two story house above the office.

The remote is a simple yet stylish piece of hardware that features an OLED display and 3 buttons. It connects to the X360Key motherboard via a high speed USB2 connection. It also has USB for connecting USB hard drives and other devices. The OLED and buttons are used to control various aspects of X360Key. It is also used for browsing attached USB media devices and launching games.
