Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Lookey Loos Part 9.....September, 2011
« on: September 26, 2011, 08:06:10 AM »

Update: Got both TVs home, neither worked. I'll have fun destroying them cause what a pain in the ass moving the big one.

In my area we have recycle places which PAY US for bringing in old tvs, computers, monitors. They pay 6 cents a pound. A 20 to 30 pound monitor brings in a few bucks. A big screen tv is also paid for by the pound despite the fact that most of it is particle board frame.

That's what I do with electronics like that. Busting them up for copper or "gold" is not for me.

MM

Could that kind of paper even be recycled ?

Well, I haven't made a study of what paper products can be recycled, but in my town anything that is paper or paper related can be put in to the "recycle"  yellow bin picked up each week at our homes. This bin also takes plastic with the triangular recycle symbol and recycle glass that has a "deposit" value. Aluminum soft drinks cans with a recycle value go in that bin also.

We have a "thriving" business in fellows who walk around "picking" the trash bins for plastic and glass with a California deposit value of 5 cents or so.  In the days from the early 1900's through 70's or so the term for these guys was "rag picker", but now they have been elevevated to "recyclers".

Unfortunately, at least one in my neighborhood makes a mess by sorting through the bins the day before pickup, so I put mine out either at late night or even early morning (5 a.m.) before the pickup.  At one point he was taking stuff out of the yellow recycle bin (like cardboard, etc) and out of the gray (regular trash bin) and putting it all in the GREEN bin for yard waste. He had a real system going, but of course it ruined the whole idea of getting our local trash organized for the fleet of specialized trucks who come through.

Would I do it again. Yes   ;D

Well, you persevered and got some good results and as you said, you learned a lot. There are plenty of people who read and contribute to these forums who have learned that just because you get something cheap that it is not necessarily a good deal.

Would you do it again and the answer is "yes". That one kind of astounds me. That was a lot of work for the return, but if you were happy with it, I'm sure there are more surplus furniture auctions in your area.

I quickly lost interest in these shows and won't watch them unless literally nothing else is on. Hell I'd probably watch certain infomercials over storage wars or auction hunters.

Now, if we could just convince the 4.4 million regular viewers of Storage Wars to join you in the pursuit of the perfect food chopper. (source: Arbitron)

i gotta figure out how to post pics

Looks like you did.

Regarding the .380....I would have paid you 3 times that much.

Edit: whoops...correction...I would have paid you 2x that much knowing I could sell it for $180 !
In my area there is always a demand for guns of any grade and depending on the buyer...I wouldn't sell it
to any pistolero who walked by, but I know some reputables who would buy it from me.  ;D

What should I do with these. Dump them (recycle of course)? Any value? Total noobie question!

1) recyle paper products
2) No value
3) Yes, BEYOND total noobie question !

Congratulations Hibid on your great lkr purchase !

I also appreciate your feelings on future buys; if my 1 in 50 theory holds true, your next 49 purchases will be average to below average !   ;D

OK, here's the link for the editing post I mentioned in the post above.

IT IS THE SAME LOCKER.  I was hoping this was a new GOOF on the part of the show's editors.

Look at post #18 in this link:

I'll look it up, but I remember posting about a bad editing they did with closed and open boxes; don't know if it was the same one or not. I'll post a link to it when I find it.

Meanwhile, I clicked on your link above and it came up saying I needed something to run that video. When I clicked on it my Norton anti-virus (etc) said there was a threat. Meanwhile the program started popping up 3 different screens indicating I had won something. Don't know if this would happen to other people or not, but thought I should say something; maybe Norton being over-cautious, but I hate POP-UPs for all kinds of products or services.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Jackpot ! Jackpot in the Safe ?
« on: September 24, 2011, 08:32:53 PM »
Craigslist has picked up a  bit since I posted the windmill pic a few days ago in this thread. The item below sold through Clist for $70 after pitching it as selling at Sears for $100 plus tax. New in the sealed box. First person to seriously want it at $70 got to open the box when buying it. This item came from this lkr.

One of the challenges when selling stuff from this locker is that I have moved the smaller items to my permanent lkr and I have to keep track of that fact when putting stuff on Craigslist..."now where IS that item?".  I did this because my permanent locker is only 1 mile from my home, but the safe locker is 7 miles away.

Fortunately, I haven't had a no-show at a Craigslist appointment for about a year, but I WOULD be ticked if I had driven to the distant "safe lkr" only to have no one show up.

I agree, this thread has been epic. Thanks for all the time you put in to share it with us Movieman.

No problem. This locker is holding up as the 1 in 50 (for me at least) that more than holds its own.

Here's the next part of the story:

Today, 9 24 2011, the storage facility has its 2nd "yard sale" of the year, and as I had rented the lkr, I became a participant. Instead of selling at my usual Saturday flea I wanted to sell here in an attempt to get some of the big stuff gone. Alas, it didn't happen.

The people who came were into smalls and that was OK as I sold a fair amount and half of them actually CAME from this lkr. I had one couple interested in the Lane hope chest at $70 (down from $100) but they didn't come through. The biggest item sold was the one pictured below...new in the box...asked $175 and it went for $150. This sign came from this lkr.

Two women showed up and asked about a 35 pin Harley Davidson collection AND two pieces of motorcycle leather.
I took an educated guess and asked if they were friends of the frm (deadbeat) lkr owner....they were. They bought the two leathers, so I FINALLY got some money out of her !

Garage Sales / Re: Yard Sale Time
« on: September 23, 2011, 08:27:06 PM »
.... did $500.00 in sales. Needless to say but I am very pleased. .

That's a good day Millertime !  I have a friend who has recently been specializing in clothes. He buys all he can at the kind of auction where they sell by the piece....in this case totes, cardboard drums, racks of hanging clothes...that's what he bought recently.

He prices pretty much like you did and seems happy with it.  I limit myself to professional sports jackets (Lakers, etc), leather jackets (motorcycle and sportcoat styles), Levi's jeans (either new or in good shape), Military camo, Jordan and similar sneakers.

Glad you had a good day....rain....doesn't hit California until January usually, but sometimes we get it  Oct-Dec, but would be once every 6 weeks or so and not amount to much.

Well, I appreciate the referral guys. But, I think that a link would have been appropriate in this situation.
