The Treasure Chest / Re: Theres pep in my step, got the first Locker

Yeah apparently you, me and my father are on the same page, cause me and the pops were thinking at least $50.

It will be interesting to see what it brings. When I look for a price like that I put it on eBay as the millions watching are a better shot than the hundreds coming through a flea market.

At a flea market if I put out a 20 year old Nikon underwater camera I would be lucky to get $30 for it, but at eBay it brought $85 I think.  An underwater enclosure for a video camera (only certain models) wouldn't have brought $20 at the flea (even though it looked DYNAMITE) but on eBay it brought $100.

Take a look at that link I provided earlier about the German artist who sells that kind of item. He gets in the $50 and up range for his items.

As to "trench art" there may be a new definition being used here that I am not familiar with. The trench art I have sold has come from WWI and WWII...literally from the trenches. I wonder how much "trench art" is being done in Iraq and Afganistan?

Hey Movieman, Bandit,

You been doin this a long time. Have you noticed a measurable change in the quality or type of things stored in lockers over the years, are is it still pretty much the same kinda stuff since you first started?

Personally, I think the NUMBER of better lockers has gone down in the last couple of years.

A lot of people I run into (just ordinary folks, not new buyers) have asked me since the housing crises and downturn (from 2008 on) if I am seeing better stuff as people default on mortgages, suffer unemployment, etc.

My answer is NO. If anything I am seeing more just ordinary stuff and that stuff is from lower income families, not the middle class. With 10% or more unemployment, there are still 90% employed, and they are holding on for the most part.

Sure, there are good units, but as many of us have been saying for the last 10 months, they are 1 in 20 or even 1 in 50 compared to the average or less than average unit.

THE ABOVE IS ALL MY OPINION; your's may (and probably WILL) vary.

That ROI looks about right to me, but a word of caution for the new folks, that does'nt take out all the expenses (fuel, labor, dump run, sales fees, etc.) or income taxes.

Well, those figures are nice and 3 of the 4 are running in the same $3 plus area, but in the almost eight years I've been doing this, the BEST I did (year end figures) was 2.74 x the money and right now I'm running at 1.72 x the money.

Guess I need to find better stuff !  ;)

so a dead body will fit in a 2x2x4 box.  I would hate to have reached into that box..

Sooner or later if you do this enough you won't find a dead body, but you'll find urns of ashes. I think I've found 3.

Most funeral homes will take them off your hands if they can't be returned to the relative who LOST his/her locker.

Just watched an episode that I think aired last week, but I'll review it in a minute anyway.

Right now the new episode is starting (followed by the 2nd edition of "unlocked") so I'll be back in about an hour !  ;D
******

OK, "unlocked" is ending and I can't bring myself to go back and review the 2 shows that ran before it, but as usual the drama was there and some good things were found, BUT the show seems to be getting more honest in its approach.

Now the show is ending and they are doing a profit analysis...I'll re-run that and give you the results...pretty interesting.

Jarrod and Brandi...............spent.....$7,790........profit was $23, 644...for every dollar they spent they made....$3.04

Barry................................spent .....$11,653....profit was...$36,290...for every dollar he spent he made..........$3.12

Darrell...............................spent.....$8,245......profit was....$29,908..for every dollar he spent he made..........$3.63

Dave (boo, hiss !)................spent.....$20,960....profit was....$144,249...for every dollar he spent he made........$6.88

OK, a new way to enjoy math....I'll have to work mine out !

To finish, Dotson auctions off a Harley Peace Officer bike....Darrell gets it for $12K....Barry knocks over his mysterious briefcase !

More hijinks from tv's newest success story !  ;)

I got this in the "safe locker" a few weeks ago and it finally came to the surface.

It measures 40" wide x 29" high x 21" deep.  The top is pretty much solid pieces of wood, but the sides are more of a fiber-board with wood on outside and a beige inside (see pics).

The wide trim on the liftable lid is nicely done (by hand?) and the lift handle seems brass or something.

It's lightweight because of the four main panels.   I was thinking it would have been from the 1930s and used for storage of things like pillows, blankets, sheets etc.

Any thoughts?

Look at the chain links in the photo below; they look like they're hand hammered (pattern).

In regard to your question about the metal man on the "motorcycle"....see this thread as a starting point.

http://storageauctionforums.com/index.php?topic=992.0

I think your's is more local than that....if I had it I would put it with plastic motorcycle models I am currently selling and try to get $3 to $5 for it....but hey, maybe it's worth $20 ?

Ben....glad your wife is happy....that makes two (maybe 3) of us !

****

Spent 3 hours today at the safe locker .... it is down to about 8 large items now and I am putting those on Clist, eBay classifieds, and the storage facility is having a "garage sale" in a couple of weeks where typically 30 or so vendors open up their lkr doors and sell some of their stuff.

This is perfect for me !  My unit is at the end and there is a 12 x 12 square just beyond me which I will also get to use.
This will take the place of my regular Saturday flea, but hopefully the big items will sell (if they haven't before then) and I can set up my tables for small collectibles too.  A win, win I hope.

Last year they had 30 sellers and about 200 buyers...sound ok by me.

What ever good luck penny, rabbit foot, or what not you have Movieman can I borrow it for next week?

Well you got the LUCK part of the equation correct. The New In Box Inversion Table wasn't visible at all by any of us, so just DUMB LUCK it was in there.

The Mixer was the key thing I saw plus a bag that I thought was a muscial instrument (very clean bag) turned out to be the speaker stands inside....but nice anyway. One of the guys thought that bag was a canopy in a bag.  Speakers were also completely hidden. The pedal controller was somewhat visible...the bag that is, so I was counting on all that stuff.

Usual crap as well, but only a couple of boxes as the other items took up most of the space.

So, two good lockers about 3 weeks apart....means I either won't get any good ones for awhile and therefore may not get ANY for awhile as I am better and better at resisting just buying for buying sake.

Looks like some nice stuff worth the money.  Let us know what you find.

Been two weeks; maybe he fell and can't get up (and of course the server errors here didn't help).  ;)

In GA its 3 of 4. along with the Georgia suitcase (garbage bag full of clothes). There are about 20 of them in every locker.

I like the suitcase reference. In my area we call them "soft-sided Samsonites" .  ;D

Here are a couple of more items I got in the $350 lkr mentioned above:

Aside from the Perego strollers, these Jeep Branded strollers do well too.

Inversion below sells for $100 plus at retail.

Does anybody have any suggestions on how to go about purchasing storage lockers without a place to put the items I purchase.

Does the expression...."rolling on the floor, laughing my a** off" ring any bells ?

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Should I buy just to buy?
« on: September 14, 2011, 07:25:20 AM »
So my question is should I buy one, even if I don't like it or see value? Or should I hold off and think the right one will come...???

I really wanna get my feet wet!

It's one thing to get your feet wet, and another to walk out in that water until SUDDENLY you drop off when stepping off a 3 foot bank!  There are always more auctions around the corner. Why not try to buy as wisely as you can for your first one.

Just because you lost to someone else on those first 4 lkrs doesn't mean they won. They could have lost too in the return-on-investment part of the deal.
