New to Storage Auctions? / Re: What to do Office Furniture?
« on: September 14, 2011, 07:20:47 AM »
I wonder how he made out with all the office furniture ? He hasn't been back since Aug. 2 .
I know from personal experience how office furniture sells here in Mass. with so many companies going OOB , downsizing or moving out of the  state / country .                                                                                      You almost have to offer to pay someone to take it plus offer free delivery .
Bandit

And another one bites the dust. Add him to the list with "momonamission", "JohnnyGHonda", the  guy in Texas with similar office furniture, and who knows how many others who hardly made the hit-parade at 10 posts on this forum.

The "survival of the fittest" has a perfect testing ground in this business.

I am in the process of building a storage locker in my back yard. Which somewhat sucks since this is a rental, but in long run will save me money from having to rent a locker. Its currently in the planning stage, I will keep yall updated with pictures and what not.

Depending on how it looks in your pics, I know at least ONE person in California who could use your talents !  ;)

Well, let's try this test. As I post this at 6:10 a.m. on Tuesday, 9 13 2011 there were 8160 posts showing as having been posted.  I'll check this at 6 p.m. this evening and at 6 a.m. Wednesday morn to see how many posts get through, but with other posters saying there are other abnormalities in the accounting functions (number of members?) who knows.

One thing's for sure...it's slow...that pouring molassess in winter is the best description yet !

OK, it's 5:10 a.m. Wednesday, 9 14 2011 and looks like things are about back to normal.
Signing in, going to most recent posts, going to a specific thread like this one all took only 2 seconds or so instead of 2 to 3 minutes (and sometimes not getting there).

Between 6 a.m. yesterday and 5:10 a.m. today there have  been 15 posts, with 4 of those coming this morning between 4 and 5 a.m. Pacific time from tclane and me.

We're back !  ;D

Posting this at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, 9 13 2011 at about one week after forum started SLOWING DOWN badly.

This is actually my 3rd post today and feels like a miracle !
*******

Got a 5 x 10 lkr yesterday for $350 based on seeing one piece of DJ equipment (a nice mixer) and it's paying off with the spkrs being there, spkr stands in a new nylon case, another piece of dj equipment (a control panel for pedals) and a couple of boxes I can't get to yet that hopefully will have some dj pedals.

Also a stove, air-conditioner, an African Drum and.....drum roll....an African Blow Gun. I actually saw an African blow gun and spear on eBay, so I guess all weapons aren't forbidden there.

Crowd was decent...about 20 with most being regulars (we almost knew everyone). Heard about another earlier auction that had 60 people; the smaller number definitely helps and there is a certain amount of courtesy to not hogging every lkr that comes up. I do that for people and they for me; of course if it's a DYNAMITE lkr, all friendships go out the window to get "the prize".  ;D

Drew,

I don't know if is worth mentioning, but there are generally more than 4 new posts in one day.

Wayne

In the roughly 15 hours between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. today (9 13 2011) there were somewhere around 8 posts.
Forgot to look at the number before I got to this point, and didn't want to risk losing what progress I made just getting to this point!

At any rate, whether its 7 or 10, not many posts. People just plain giving up I would guess. Good to hear some hired help is on the way as it's been about a full week now.

Congratulations on your first buys !  Nice to get that under your belt and then keep moving on.

Also, it's always a bonus when you keep stuff for your own or family's use; don't forget to account for that on the
positive side when figuring out how much you made; if you didn't pay out "real" money for some item you kept, it's money in your pocket from that "found" item you got "free" in the locker.  ;D

Drew,

I don't know if is worth mentioning, but there are generally more than 4 new posts in one day.

When I read through the new posts today, I noticed something that has occurred two or three times before. It seemed to be right as the forum started to show the looong load times. The only posts showing as "Today" were in the first four topics. there were no additional listings in any of the other sections. This seems very strange since the most active is the Storage Auction Stories and General Auction talk.

Hope this helps...

yes still working on it.. I havent gotten any errors in the past couple days. Please keep me updated with any problems that pop up.

Drew

As I am writing this at 2 pm Pacific time, Sunday 9 11 2011 I would say the site is in such a state as to almost being unuseable.

1) Time to get to home page....about 30 seconds (should be like 2 seconds)

2) Click on "most recent post" link...time to get to it about 40 to 60 seconds.

3) Click to log in....goes to "internal error"; refresh it ... take about 30 seconds but then comes up.

4) Fill in log-in form...takes about 30 seconds and goes to internal error; refresh it gets there in about 30 more seconds.

5) Click on "most recent post" (happens to be "server problem" thread) and gets there in maybe 30 seconds.

6) Click on "reply", goes to "internal error"; refresh, it gets there.

7) now will post this and hope it goes through, but before that:

NOTE: Drew....unless I've read the recent posts page incorrectly it looks like only about 5 posts per day for last three days; hell, I post 5 posts in a hour and I have'nt been able to access the forum for days now...this is first time I've really gotten through.

8) now postiing...hopefully !

Working on it guys! Thanks for your patience. Keep me updated with any problems you may have.

6:30 a.m. Pacific time on 9/8/2011 and got this message just before actually being able to post.

Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

And in general it takes a long time for anything to come up or to change from one place to another. This problem seems to be contributing to folks not posting or even reading over the last couple of days.

30-40 bucks for the Mahogany Chest?  Seriosly, Movieman?  Put that sucker on a scale and PM me shipping and handling.  Hell, if you're selling it and that big empty footlocker you found for that price, put BOTH on the scale and tell me shipping and handling.
I love those things.  Both are old, and I realize that I'll be over paying, but those two items are just the 'got a chance, want them' items you stumble upon once in a blue moon.

Well, some answers here from readers (thanks guys!) plus some research online at Cost Plus/World Market, Pier One, Sears gave me some good ideas on these furn pieces, but I think I'll sell them locally. It's mostly selfish (not wanting to pack them) but also, if you DID buy them, you would be paying heavily for shipping and that's not right. I have heard of guys shipping on Greyhound though, and something like that trunk wouldn't have to be boxed.

Thanks anyway though for the interest.

I think the "antique" market in California (in my area at least) is done. One of the guys had a slot in an antique mall and when it folded he got a full store about 20 miles away. It folded. He is now back at an antique mall; I need to visit his slot and the others to get an idea of large antique prices as the "sideboard" I have would qualify.

Don't tempt me to take you up on THAT offer, but please give me an idea of what you would charge for these at a flea or on Craigslist. They are both nice, but I just don't know if the market is there for them in my area at more than the $30 to $40 I indicated. I would guess the mahogony would have sold for $125 or so (maybe more) at somewhere like Pier One or World Imports; I'll check there for something similar.

The Lounge / Wreck of HumVee !
« on: September 07, 2011, 06:21:55 AM »
I saw this wreck I was driving along and it was pretty dramatic from my first view, but by the time I got back around to it and had to walk in a block, it looked like this.

Imagine the HumVee forward about 10 feet and "perched" on top of the driver's side of the white car. Both cars had gone through a decorative stone wall (about 6" thick).  The driver of the white car must have crapped her pants having that thing on top !

Want some more? You get them anyway !

Picture above and two below are of Gateway sound system to be plugged into a computer. That's a lot of sound.
This dates to 2006 and I found one on Craigslist with asking price of $100; I'd be happy to get that. Woofer weighs a ton.

Pic above shows a Harbor Freight cheapie camera/monitor system. Sells new for $60.

OK, end of these pics. Feel free to jump in with some pricing ideas on furn. Thanks!

Here are the next 5.

Before I moved the "antique" sideboard cabinet on top of the hope chest I looked inside the hope chest; it's a Lane.
The sideboard hasn't seen an upright position yet, but I think the top hinges open and you put stuff down inside. It has small 1" wheels for rolling around. Maybe it was for storing linens or something. Trim looks nice.

The oak cabinet above has a broken piece of "frame" at the bottom of the upper display space, but I have it and is a simple fix. Haven't found glass that goes behind that grid. This is an entertainment center. I have bottom door also; needs putting on.

Green trunk held promise; next pic shows contents.

A "LOT" of letters....hopefully something of value in there too; other boxes contained historical newspapers like "Germans Surrender", "Rooseveldt Dead"  (both from the mother's era) and then "Diana Dies" from either the mother in her "golden years" or from the deadbeat daughter who lost the lkr. Papers like that going for about $5 each on eBay. I'll sell at flea for $5 to guys who go to more exclusive fleas that sell antiques...they'll get double or triple that.

This basketweave pattern trunk is pretty nice; thoughts on selling price?

Nice locker.  It's just giving and giving and giving.

Yep, and I thought it had stopped giving, but......

Posting these pics on Wednesday the 7th of September, 2011....the 2nd day of server problems. Hope these pics don't thrown the server off the cliff !

I finally reached the back wall of the "safe lkr" and these pics show some of the doings there. Mostly big stuff, but a few boxes of goodies as well. There are about 20 pics, so I will put 5 or so in each of the next four posts.

If you have any ideas on what some of the big stuff should sell for, please chime in; I don't deal in furniture pieces very much so I welcome any price input.

*****

Overall view above shows the big TV stand (glass and metal); below on the left are "cherrywood" entertainment center
and oak entertainment center with mahogony trunk and old sideboard cabinet on top.

Pic above shows the downward view of a trunk in right rear corner of unit; at this point looks interesting.

The "cherrywood" above is one piece I could use some help on for pricing. I think this is the kind of piece you would get at WalMart, but I didn't see anything like it the other day when I stopped in. The "rack" below the green piece of plastic tape are two wine racks that slide out. Gotta love that Sutter Home !  ;D

The mahogony chest above opens upward on the top showing about a 4" deep, lined storage space. The two doors open outward. Nothing special was in it; thinking maybe $40 or $30 for this ?
