The Lounge / Banned Words (overused in 2013)
« on: December 31, 2013, 09:24:08 AM »
DETROIT — "Selfie" was named word of the year by Oxford Dictionary, but isn't getting any love from Michigan's Lake Superior State University.

The word that became popular to describe taking a picture of yourself with a smartphone was the runaway winner in Lake Superior State University's 39th annual list of words people wish would just go away.

•   This year's list of seven words came from more than 2,000 nominations
•   Editors consider pet peeves from everyday speech, the news, education, technology, politics

Here are others on the list:
• Twerk/Twerking
• Hashtag
• Twittersphere
• Any word ending in -ageddon
• Obamacare
• Fan base

Here are my suggestions for the list:

Storage Wars
Duck Dynasty

eBay / How do you "prompt" eBay buyers to make their payment?
« on: December 30, 2013, 09:54:15 AM »
Sometimes eBay buyers "forget" to pay within a reasonable time (say 3 days).  When that happens how do you prompt them to get with the program?

I send them an eBay email saying. "Thought you’d like to know I have your (item) packed
And ready to ship to you; just waiting for your payment.  Thanks !"

eBay / Re: I just started an ebay store...
« on: December 27, 2013, 03:01:08 PM »

not sure how many transactions you do but without a store you cant search your listinsg or sold items so say for example someone messages you and asks you about somethign you have to go line item by line item looking where with a store you can search something from the title and pull up the listing right away.

$15 isnt' a crazy amount i mean one sale a month should be able to cover that. ebay wont admit it but i feel like you get better search ranking with a store as well

What?  I  only list about 10 to 20 items a month (but there are always that many on there as things sell) and if someone sends me a question about an item there is a notice at the top of my homepage saying I have an unanswered question and the link takes me right to the item. Even if I had 100 items that would be the case. No store needed for that feature.

They promote that one gets a better search ranking, but I have listed an item, signed out, just went into eBay without signing in and did a search for the item I just listed or maybe one I listed a day or two before. Invariably  my item will show up in the top five listings.  No store association.

This January, 2014 I will have been selling for 10 years on eBay and I never really saw the need for a store. There may be some other reasons I don't know about, but in this case ignorance is bliss.

Reality Shows about Storage Auctions / Baggage Battles
« on: December 27, 2013, 10:21:59 AM »
I first have to say that I haven't watched any of the storage auctions shows in about a year, and I had never watched Baggage Battles or similar shows.

Anyway, I recently started watching "bulk" tv shows (binge watching) on a free tv service via computer, and discovered Baggage Battles.

I've watched one episode of I think three seasons worth and already the old familiar format from Storage Wars is setting in.

*****

I couldn't believe these buyers ("professionals" for the most part who have stores, etc) were paying huge prices for something like a single piece of luggage.

First, they had flown in from across the ountry to Miami where they had a one hour preview of the auction items. They each found a piece of luggage they liked (or a bag of jewelry) and away they went.

One youngish guy bought several bags of jewelry and cleared $10,000 or something. One couple bought a MonteBlanc piece of luggage for I think $1200 and it had a couple of old books...one first edition "valued" at $7,500 by a dealer.

Another guy bought a heavy bag (70's vintage...which he noted) but why he thought it would contain 70's vintage stuff is beyond me.  He lost about $700 on his three or four purchases.

*****

Bottom line, there were hundreds of people in the room. The professional buyers got the screen time. There was a fantastic find, a few medium finds and a loss.

I may watch a few more episodes, but the enjoyment factor is in the disbelief at what they would spend on "weighing" a bag or viewing a 3 pound plastic bag of jewelry.

I know when I fly I never put anything valuable in checked luggage...it goes on board with me and stays at my feet; cameras, laptop, etc.

So, another buying/selling show...this one only lasted 3 seasons...and I think I know why.

This fellow used to communicate here on the forum but he fell on some hard times it seems...this was some time ago but I thought enough time had passed.....

I did a search for stories about the Storage Wars Series and couldn't find much of anything after May or so of 2013.

The furor from Hester news was dying down about then and apparently the Dotson's and Darryl were being shorthanged at that time to in terms of "screen time".

Anyone find anything new about the original series from August through Decemember, 2013?

******

The exception of course might be reviews posted on Travis' blog area....I used to do those here, but I haven't watched any of the shows since the first 4 or so episodes of the New York brand came to be.

General Storage Auction Talk / Police auctions…what luck have you had ?
« on: December 26, 2013, 08:14:25 AM »
Years ago these used to be a thing in my area with one location conducting about three different types of auctions on the same day in a large physical facility.

They had an auto auction, a building with furniture, appliances, etc. Sold by the lot or piece by piece, and an outdoor area with surplus stuff from military bases, business closeouts etc.

Now that place is gone !

******

Here are three results I got from a Google search; I didn't drill down in these to find any local area results. I'm still busy
with picking locally.

General Storage Auction Talk / Has anyone found pre 1900 photographs?
« on: December 26, 2013, 08:05:03 AM »
Over the years I have found a few old black albums with photos from the 1930's or so and sometimes those would
have pre-1900 photos as well that had been passed down through the family.

Anyone else?  And if so, what luck did you have selling them?

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Approached by a Domain Broker
« on: December 22, 2013, 08:15:11 PM »
Both replies #9 and #10 above pretty much sum up the scene as I see it today.

While great lockers still sell for big bucks in my area there are more opportunities in the lower priced lockers.

Meanwhile, of the 10 or so regular buyers in my area a good 4 or 5 out of 10 are moving along in new directions.
