Things appear to be like Movieman said, a continual wave of new faces who drop a bunch of money, get burned, don't show up again, but then a new wave arrives to replace them and they do the same thing over again. Gotta find away to compete against this never ending hoard of "shoppers".

That was a good report Copiavita. The details on lkr #s , prices, buyers and lookeyloos tells it all.  As to finding a way to compete against the masses, I'm looking into alternative sources more than I am trying to beat the crowds anymore.
I think we're in for a long haul with the tv shows ramping up the way they are.

wow.  There has to be some laws broken somewhere in that process.
The few auctions that I have been to the locks were already cut and were laying inside of the locker when the auctioneer opened the house locks.  Is this common or are most lockers having the owners lock cut off for the first time???

IN MY EXPERIENCE the locks are MOST OFTEN cut some weeks prior to the auction. This is the sequence AS I UNDERSTAND IT.

Scenario 1: (most common IMHO)

1) Lkr contents owner doesn't pay bill for several months (may vary by state).
2) Prop mgr cuts lock (or has auctioneer co. cut locks) and puts on their lock and seal. Contents owner lk dropped inside lkr.

3) Legal notice runs in paper.
4) Contents owner is notified by certified mail.
5) If contents owner comes and pays up, prop mgr lock taken off and contents owner lk put on by contents owner.
5a) This is when the contents owner has chance to take stuff out.
5b) If contents owner defaults again process repeats...now there are two contents owner locks on floor. A bad sign.

Scenario 2:

(first 4 steps of scenario #1...legal process)

5) (variation on scenario #1) If prop mgr is 99% sure the deadbeat will NEVER COME BACK, here is
opportunity for prop mgr to MIS-APPROPRIATE goods in the lkr. Sometimes this is evidenced by tumbled down
boxes and/or patterns in the dust from a removed objects (also handprints in dust and opened tool boxes).

6) Lkr sealed back up by prop mgr and sale goes on (minus some goodies).

There are other variations of this, but these are the two most likely IMHO.

It happens, and has to be watched for, but is not super common. You learn the bad places and avoid them or take the risk.  A PACKED lkr is only susceptible to this in the first "x" feet. The boxes at bottom of back wall aren't going to be gone through by mgr.

Side note:

Just because an auctioneer cuts lks off is no guarantee that prop mgr theft doesn't happen. Prop mgr could still cut off the new locks and get in lkr, OR might have done so BEFORE auctioneer lks were put on. Theft is possible no matter what sequence happens.

THE ONLY TIME YOU SEE AN EMPTY LOCKER COME UP.....is when locks are cut at time of auction. AND, who's to say that lkr wasn't previously opened by mgr and competely emptied and resealed ?

Get the picture ?

Well, that's a tall order, but I'll give it a shot.

1) Don't buy just any locker because the price seems right and no one is bidding on it. There's a reason for no bids.

2) If you see a hint of collectibles (sports, entertainment, die-cast cars, etc) it MIGHT be a good lkr.

3) Photo equipment does well for me.

4) Brand name tools would be good (Makita, DeWalt, even Craftsman). Taiwan, no.

5) See a possible gun case no one else sees? Go for it. Might be empty, might not be a gun case.

6) Hi-end furniture good. Particle board no.

7) TVs are good if plasma, lcd or LED. Old ones not so much since most won't be digital.

8.) Clothing (for me thats Pro Sports Jackets, leather jackets, name brand tennis shoes, good boots)

9) Comic books...Superman #1(Like the one Nicolas Cage owns...valued at millions.)

10) Vintage nudity either in old Cavalcades, etc or original b&W or color prints of what were then called "nudes".

OK, now for the flip side...what you will actually see:

1) stained mattresses
2) dressers missing drawers
3) waterbeds (frames and MAYBE the bed itself) (no Posturpedics probably)
4) old canned food (bulging) old noodles (mouse chewed)
5) transparent containers (like 2 liter soda bottles) with 3" of urine.
6) other goodies list the other members here will provide for you.

Go get 'em !

this brings the term "managers special" to a whole new light.  Whats the term for the unit the manager puts together of things left on the lot??   I forget....

Well, could be any of the following:

Manager's locker
Setup
abandoned

But I like YOUR'S the best:  Manager's Special !

3035
Am I reading this correctly that your friend readily admits to going through the unit and keeping items for himself?  Seems like one wouldnt admit to that, especially to someone who is a storage buyer and then have it get posted on the net.  What facility in what state does your friend manage?

You can be sure he wouldn't buy from the facility where his friend works.

Do you REALLY think he is going to tell you the state, city and name of the facility where the crooked prop mgr works ?

3036
Yes, the shows are disruptive to business. That's a given.

Some facility managers taking advantage, yes.

All the regular buyers having to put up with this crap until SOMEDAY it settles down ? Yes.

3037
you pay several thousands of dollars to place your commerical during a tv show if it was pure crap?

Nope, nor would I pay several thousand dollars for a load of crap in a locker which is what the reality is at
a lot of auctions these days.

Went to two auctions today both by the same auctioneer.

First facility had 8 units and nothing memorable until the end. I didn't even bid on a lkr.

The last unit was 10 x 20 with big stuff (including 3 mattresses, one of which was RATTY, an entertainment center (cheap) and a roll-around toolbox. Toolbox was in good red, shape but couldn't see any name on the front. I think all Craftsmen have name on front and certainly Snap-On would.

Couldn't see much else as big items covered view of the rear. There were some drum stands, pedals etc but they looked in bad shape.

Starts at $100 or so, goes to $300 when a regular offered $1,000 and half the crowd starts to walk away..most were newbies. Goes on up from there and when the auctioneer asked the $1K bidder if he wanted to go $1,200 (after a 1,100 bid was made) he basically laughed and said, "I don't want it." AND HE NEVER DID WANT IT !

So, it goes on up with a couple of regulars taking the semi-newbie for a ride to.....$1,750 where it ended with him getting it. Oh well...doubt it will break even at that.

I also asked the property manager what was owed on the lkr and it was.... $1700, so the mgrs were happy campers along with the auctioneer.

******

2nd auction had 7 I think it was. Didn't bid on a one. Most went in the $200 range.

Hey, fate handed you a great opportunity. Wish I had been there. I would have done some pursuing of info.

My main question is still....is this in fact the production crew for A&E's show or some neer-do-well upstart?

Been a while since I read the original posts and articles about Storage Wars Dallas, so I may be out of the loop.

Looking forward to the day when we get to see some Dallas action in whatever form it may take. If Dallas, Miami, New York all play out in TRUE Storage Wars format it will be a sight to behold. One poster here is saying the ratings are going down for SW; if that is true the gamble to have 4 separate shows running might be a risky one.

Here's a link to a Sacramento, CA (area) new "buyer"s  experience with crowd and prices info. The auctions took place Wednesday, July 27, 2011.

Sounds like you might have learned a lot one way or the other; why wait a month to go again?

I know from your previous posts that you are as cautious as can be, but just GOING (not buying) can't hurt you can it?

I'll probably hear the $1,000 lkr story filter into my area as all of the regulars share that info if they were at an auction.
That high bid technique works most of the time, but sometimes not everyone is scared off and it goes up from there. I've seen it happen both ways when I've done it.

Anyone eles notice that they have the same auctioner all the time! Even in Vegas. Don't know about you all but I get different ones each place I go. Also do they all travel in a pack and never go to any other auctions? THE SHOW IS SCRIPTED.....

Yuuupp !  Dotson (the auctioneer) is always on the scene no matter where they go, so YES arrangements have been made it would seem....unless Dotson already had the contract to do the Storage One auctions in Las Vegas.

As to the ? do they never go to any other auctions.....In one of the Las Vegas episodes, Dave Hester had gotten up before the rest of the pack and gone to other auctions (presumably from other auctioneers). Otherwise, they may have an agreement with the Storage Wars show to NOT go to other auctions as this might DILUTE their presence on SW. Or, they might go to others and we wouldn't know.

I am interested to see if the SW Dallas show is truly done by the same production company for the same network (A&E). It's unclear at this moment as two posters here ...BigBuyGal and Ronin seem to be at odds about what is going on there...show (whoever is doing it) is supposed to start in the Fall (a month or so away).

Two new episodes tonight, and more of the same...showing more losing lkrs now, but still a fair amount of great items.

Here's what I noticed the most though...an editing error in the "Eskimo Pie" lkr that Darrell got.

*****

Movies (and TV) have continuity people who make notes on what is happening, where people are standing, etc. This is more important in movies if a shot is stopped and then reshot (take 2) so that some "continuity" is maintained when editing takes place. In other words, if the woman in red has only one of her two white, long gloves on when the cameras stop, it would be a bad thing if she had on two gloves when the next take is edited in.

WELL, when the door is opened on the "Eskimo Pie" lkr there are three boxes on the right that are neatly stacked. One on top says "medium box". They cut away to face shots of the players. When they cut back, the boxes are NOT neatly stacked ! One on top is tilted half way into the box below it. Also, a white rocking chair (empty before) NOW has a box sitting in it. THIS IS TERRIBLE editing, and also shows that the middle (open boxes shot) was taken AFTER  the lkr was purchased and gone through (that isn't supposed to be shown until later.)

Hope I explained that enough....if you record this on a Tivo or other DVR you can go back and watch this a frame at a time. I expect them to do it right....one of the few mistakes I've seen, but now I'll watch even closer.

So, what's the verdict?  Gold bars, silver candlesticks, signed memorabilia, stamp and coin collections OR.....

dirty diapers, broken chests of drawers, bags of trash, TV sets with walnut woodgrain on the side ?
