Going to an auction today where they rope off a 20 by 30 area in front of the sale lkr and bring items out piece-meal and put them on the ground.

Then the ropes are lifted and you can walk up and look at (but not touch) the items. Bidding starts by you pointing at an item and giving your bid; bidding continues until sold and then move on to next item. They also "bundle" items by saying "all the cds" or "all the clothes in this pile" etc.

Takes all day (or more). I usually last a couple of hours before leaving. People bring dollies, rolling baskets, chairs, coolers, etc to make it through the day.

I'll try to take some pics for posting here later today (Monday, June 27, 2011).

The last was pretty funny, a small unit with just a press board desk( missing drawers) and a ripped recliner. The auctioneer offered to pay someone a dollar to take the stuff, lol.

Sounds like a J. Michael's auction. When no one bids on a junker lkr here in CA he says. "Does anyone want it for a dollar? I'll pay the dollar."  A winning situation for him as the property manager gets the lkr cleaned out but the poor slub who paid the $1 that's a question mark.   OK, SURE there may be some sellable stuff in there, but MY PERSONAL OPINION is that all the buyers who passed on getting that for FREE probably made the best deal; remember, in addition to the new buyers who were at that auction who didn't want it, there were undoubtedly some veteran buyers who didn't want it for free either.

Each person would have to make this decision for him/her self while factoring in TIME, EFFORT, DUMP RUN, possible INCOME, etc.

Oh, and welcome to the forum !

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Selling clothes
« on: June 27, 2011, 09:32:56 AM »
A friend recently had 4 of the heavy plastic, 6' tables piled with clothes at 25 cents each. To me it seemed a waste of space and I still think it could have been used more profitably; he sold $15 (ballpark he said) which worked out to 60 pieces.

To my way of thinking, I probably would have found enough small stuff (hard goods) to fill those 4 tables and I think I would have made that $15 with somewhere between 1 and 5 items. But that's just my take on it; other people's opinions are still respected.

I've seen a fair number of new people buy a lkr at an inflated price JUST to get one and at least some of them later reported they were disappointed. It might be a hard call, but bidding on the safe side is probably the best bet.

The enthusiasm to get one is great and if the lkr you get works out it's even better, but enthusiasm has a way of diminishing if the lkr turns out less than expected.

I think it's safe to say there will always be MORE lkrs to buy, so probably no need to rush in.

I got my first one just over 7.5 years ago at $250 for a 10 x 10. At that time people told me I had paid too much; it turned out good, but my nostalgia about it now is that I didn't know how good it would look all these years later with the prices they way they are now in some parts of the country.

You got the low quality part right.

Salvation Army does this too in my area. I went once 7 years ago and bought one big "basket" about 4 feet square and 5 feet high. Bought it because it had about 5 model boxes in it that looked like they might be complete. 3 of the 5 were sellable. I gave the rest of the basket to a guy I knew there. Since I only paid $10 for the basket, I pretty much came out even or made $10 or so.

The guy I sold to did it for awhile back then, but then started buying the $5 to $25 lkrs which IN MY AREA are the $75 to $125 lkrs now (with some exceptions).  Even he stopped going to the SA auctions, but I think he is going back to them now.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: WHY are some lockers empty?
« on: June 26, 2011, 10:19:39 PM »
I went to a facility and 3 of the units were empty when they opened them... what is that all about?

In my area most of the property managers either cut the locks off themselves or have the auctioneer do it several weeks before the auction. At that time the door is thrown open, pictures are taken (one long shot) and then the door goes down and a prop manager lock and numbered seal goes on the door.

There are times when the DAY OF THE AUCTION the locks are cut and the door is opened. This is the only time I have seen an empty lkr come up and it simply means IN MY HUMBLE OPINION that the former tenant cleaned out the lkr, didn't let the mgr know he was leaving, and then accumulated a couple of months of non-payment of rent, credit record crapped out and pain in the rear for the mgr and us seeing an empty lkr. THERE MAY BE SENARIOS I haven't thought of that others can provide.

Two episodes were on while I was working on the computer. I paid attention to the 2nd episode which featured Lionel trains, matchbox cars (in boxes) etc.  The first 69 lots (maybe 10 items per lot) grossed $1,000 according to the narrator.

Son takes over the auction and is selling "blow molds" Xmas molded lawn figures....I think 3 Thanksgiving figures went for $150.  At my local flea a blow mold santa (at Xmas time) might bring $10 but maybe I'm not pushing them enough at $100 !

One guy bought 8 matchbox cars and his competitor bought about 150. The auctioneer said he thought the gross total on the matchbox cars was around $4,000.

Interesting show...I think it's worth watching; the dollars they get for an item at auction may not be what we get when we sell (where-ever we sell), but still...something to look at for ideas.

Nat Geo strikes again joining the used goods shows pioneered by Auction Hunters, Storage Wars and American Pickers and some less successful versions.

This time it's Flea Man tonight (Friday, June 24, 2011) on Nat Geo. (originally aired on June 17, 2011)

Should be fun to watch as some of us who buy storage lkrs at auction sell at flea markets.

The flea man's ideas about prices, customers and sources are bound to be discussable !  ;D

Not exactly storage auctions, but related in that you will see a lot of items that we WISH we would find
in lockers.

The auctioneers are Savo Auctioneers (a family business) in Olyphant, PA.

Maybe some of the PA members here have seen their auction house.

Auction Packed (producers play...I would guess...on the expression "action packed.")

Program is running on the National Geo channel on cable and satellite.

Not sure why but I always google "storageauctionforums"  and this site used to pop up first every time. Not sure why I do that instead of just typing it into the address bar I suppose out of habit. ANyhow, I noticed your now the 6th or 7th thing down and I have to scroll down.

Storagrauctionboards is first, then auction zip then a storageautin ebook self storage auction talk and then a storage auction disccussion on topix.

Just figured I'd let you know

I just googled storageauctionforums and the results came up like this:

This forum came up #1, something else #2 and storage auction boards #3.

If any reader hasn't checked out the one that comes up #3, you should do so. YOU WILL FLEE QUICKLY and find your way back here where there is actually something to read. That #3 spot is DEAD. That site must have VERY LOW RATINGS. (of course this is just my opinion; other people will have their own opinions, all of which have value).

....how come when you get to the bottom of the window for typing it goes all flaky?  is that just my computer or something? does anyone even know what I'm talking about? ugh, I'll just make shorter posts.  lol

Yes, that happens and it is (as you suggest) because of the length of the post. When it starts "jumping" just end that post and go immediately to a new post to continue the thought. It's very likely that your two posts will be one after the other as it is unlikely anyone else would be posting at the same time.
