This one is a blog, but has some interesting stories including the $27,000 antique lkrs mentioned briefly in another thread on these forums.

A generous property manager says this:

“We usually wait till a customer is three, four, five months behind before we even get to that level,” said Shale Butler, property manger of PayLess. “I’m kinda soft and reasonable. I’ll accept as little as 10 or 20 percent of what they owe to hold them out of auction.”

I'm still wishing they'd get around to actually showing a real live dump run, with the resulting dump bill!

I'm with The Teacher. I've been promoting a dump run sequence every time the producers come looking for participants. I think that suggestion went straight to the dump, did not pass a locker and is doomed to never be seen on our tv screens...but if it is I will celebrate it !

The Lounge / Re: Internet forums, trolls and flames
« on: May 11, 2011, 09:42:09 PM »
I don't think it's possible to change the name of a thread once it has started, but I should have included the words net etiquette in the title. That's what this thread is really about, and how trolls, flaming , sock puppets and spam can do damage in a number of ways to a forum.

Edit: added word SPAM.

Hope this is the right topic to add this info.

Auction today. The crowds were way down. About 15 regulars and 5 newbies. Newbies did not jump in the bidding. All units common household junk, I mean merchandise. Regulars ran the bid prices up too high in my opinion. Everybody basically either knows each other or recognizes each other, so I don't know why the average winning bid per unit was as high as they were. Increased competition? Everybody low on product? Everybody has accepted the higher prices in general? Although they sold for more than I felt comfortable paying, none of the bidding went outrageous like just a few months ago.
Yes, it's a mystery when everyone knows everyone else and the prices are still high...could be, as you said, need stock, more people selling at fleas (etc). And yes, I still see a lot I pass on because of the price not the goods themselves.....it's still evolving I think.

Sounds about right for everything you said.

A few more auctions under your belt and you'll see more of the same and be able to make
some good decisions for what will work for you.

In doing some reading about spamming on forums, I came across these definitions of a troll and flaming.

Thought they might do some good here as THE DUMP is the appropriate place for this kind of activity.

Troll
Main article: Troll (Internet)

Forum trolls are users that repeatedly and deliberately breach the netiquette of an established online community, posting inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages to bait or excite users into responding or to test the forum rules and policies, and with that the patience of the forum staff. Their provocative behavior may potentially start flame wars (see below) or other disturbances. Responding to a troll's provocations is commonly known as 'feeding the troll' and is generally discouraged, as it can encourage their disruptive behavior.

Flame wars
Main article: Flaming (Internet)

When a thread—or in some cases an entire forum—becomes unstable the result is usually uncontrolled spam in the form of one-line complaints, image macros or abuse of the report system. When the discussion becomes heated and sides do nothing more than complain and not accept each other's differences in point of view, the discussion degenerates into what is called a flame war. To flame someone means to go off-topic and attack the person rather than their opinion.

Edit: adding definition of sock puppet.
Sock puppet

Main article: Sockpuppet (Internet)

The term sock puppet refers to someone who is simultaneously registered under different pseudonyms on a particular message board or forum. The analogy of a sock puppet is of a puppeteer holding up both hands and supplying dialogue to both puppets simultaneously. A sock puppet will create multiple accounts over a period of time, using each user to debate or agree with each other on a forum. Sock puppets are usually found when an IP check is done on the accounts in forums.

Spam
Spam posts may contain anything from a single link, to dozens of links. Text content is minimal, usually innocuous and unrelated to the forum's topic, or in a very old thread that is revived by the spammer solely for the purpose of spamming links. Some text is included to prevent the post being caught by automated spam filters that prevent posts which consist solely of external links from being submitted. Full banner advertisements have also been reported

"Very interesting?" Quote from Marty Feldman Laugh-In  8)

Arte Johnson would find it interesting too:

Laugh-In

Johnson is best known for his work on Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In, an American television show (1967–1973), on which he played various characters including "Wolfgang", a smoking World War II German soldier scouting the show from behind a bush (still fighting the war) invariably commenting on the preceding sketch with the catch phrase "Very interesting..." followed by either a comic observation or misinterpretation, or simply "but stupid!" Johnson indicated later that the phrase came from Desperate Journey, a 1942 World War II film with Errol Flynn and Ronald Reagan playing Royal Air Force pilots shot down in Nazi Germany; they managed to cross much of the country without speaking German or knowing the territory but, when captured, their Nazi interrogator doubts their story with the phrase.[2

Here's a link to a thread I started about a conversation with an auctioneer who sold lockers to Allen and Ton on an upcoming (maybe June, 2011) episode of AH.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: HUGE lot of ULINE Cold Packs ?

Sounds like you've tried a lot....may be time to reduce the price to a point where someone just couldn't pass it up.

I once got 6 unopened cases of a paperback book...150 copies. I didn't think I'd ever be able to sell them all, and I threw away 100 copies rather than store them.

One year later I have sold 40 of the 50 copies I listed on ebay at buy it now of $3.00. I also charged a $2 handling fee, so net was $5.00 minus fees.

Sometimes with bulk items it's just a long haul and maybe not worth the effort or time...still 40 books at $5 (roughly) is close to $200 (over a year). Be nicer if it all came in one big chunk.  ;D

Should have been working on 4 lkrs I bought last week, but took the morning off and went to an auction instead!

No longer crowds of 60 Plus....this one had 35 (or so) would be bidders; 5 were regulars, leaving a whopping 30 newbies getting their first taste. I literally had not seen any of these people at other auctions, and I go to a lot of auctions.

There were 8 lkrs; first 5 had small amt of contents and prices never went above $25 or so. Then came the 10 x 15s;
One looked pretty good...line went slowly by; sold for $700. I would have gone $450 to $500 to leave some edge.
Another 10 x 15 went for $700 also, then the last one went for $300...it was mostly particle board furn.

So, crowds down (good); newbie factor still high; prices....still holding a little high.

I went to an auction today (Monday, May 9, 2011)  held by John Cardoza.

Cardoza is seen (very briefly) in the opening credits to Auction Hunters. He is the one who says "Sold em out" if you want to see him.

Anyway, he said today at the auction that the episode in which he sells to Allen and Ton will be on in about a month..that would put it maybe mid June.

I asked him if he could say anything about the show and he indicated he could say a little. What he DID say was that there was no way of knowing what might have happened to the contents of the lkr once he had sold it. If I read that properly, sounds like the producers could SALT the contents.

Cardoza commented about the disclaimer at the beginning of the show "their best finds", but I have to tell you if they did find a quadzilla and a hovercraft in years past, putting them BOTH in one facility that had 4 lkrs for sale wasn't a good strategy. That was the episode that sent them to the dark side as far as I was concerned.

Cardoza also commented that Ton wasn't happy when Cardoza ask (or told) him to put out his cigarette. When Ton responded "I'm the star of the show!" Cardoza responded, "It's my auction."

Cardoza said the auction took place in Ontario, CA (down south) but might be promoted as being in Rancho Cucomonga (sp). I guess Rancho C. sounds better.
