The Lounge / Spammers get DUMPED by the forum-load !
« on: May 09, 2011, 07:58:52 AM »
On Sunday, March 8, 2011 there were about 1,940 members at this forum.

Today, Monday, March 9, 2011 that number is DOWN to about 1,640.

Quite a drop and it looks like Drew did quite a house cleaning on "members" whose
only goal was to spam in one way or another.

A look at the member's list shows those with websites, and that's one way to spot
these no-good-niks.

Thanks Drew ! Vigilance will pay off.

Thanks....good to hear from someone who appears to really know what is happening there.

If there is such a problem with spam, why not just set the filters to require moderation for any post which contains a link?

If you know how to do that and can pass that information along to Drew that would be a truly positive contribution to the forums.

If I knew how to do it (and if I had the access to do it), I would, but I don't, so I can't.

This one is gutsy:

A GRAND SLAM for a spammer.

That would be my fault, but all I was stating is that I originally thought he was fake.

Not a problem for me jross....nor the others that followed up. Threads have a life of their own, and are like
one-on-one (or small group) conversations people have in person. They often go off on tangents. That's just the way
interaction is.

The only real problems I see with either live or written communications is mis-understanding because of the
definitions we have of different concepts and our individual ideas of what a word or a concept represents.
That may be too deep to investigate in a written thread, and as I said elsewhere, I'll never participate in a "live" chatroom  if it ever develops here.

Now did anyone notice how I hijacked this thread to even a different area of discussion...to heck with Dave Hester !  ;D

Craigslist / Re: Do you barter on craigslist?
« on: May 06, 2011, 06:39:43 AM »
I've been approached about it, but 9.9 times out of ten, they want to trade 5 or 6 items for my one item.

Now instead of trying to sell ONE good item for $xx I have to store, advertise or carry around 5 or 6 items.

No thanks.

I never said the Auctions or Bidding was faked or staged. I was saying that after the units are bought and are in the the hands of the buyers.

How would Laura and Don be involved If I pay for a locker and when everyone moves on to the next locker I throw something valuable in the locker I just bought and say "Hey look what I found in this locker"?

THAT is certainly possible. It could also be true of Auction Hunters. The last half dozen posts or so kind of went off on a tangent from the original intent of this thread which was to  simply show the Dave Hester website, but sometimes threads take on a life of their own.

There are 3 or 4 threads about either or both of the shows being fake, but that's OK, continue on troopers !  ;D

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Gas Prices
« on: May 05, 2011, 06:08:13 PM »
I try not letting the price get to me, but it does piss me off, because I live in the midwest and we seem to have the highest gas prices in the country. It is has been at 4.29 for about a week now, new record here, and from what i am seeing it is at least 50 cents cheaper on the west coast.

Today I paid $4.17 per gallon at an Arco. Name brand across the street is $4.27.  This is in central California.

In 2008 our high was $4.54.

When it rains, it pours.
Got one yesterday and 3 today.

Crowd and prices good today. ;D

The auction today was one of the major auctioneers, but the bulk of the big buyers were out of town..thanks guys!
Only 10 bidders and if it hadn't been for one big bidder I would have done really well.

Got one 10 x 30 but only 1/4 full....price was good...$50...it'll make some money.
Got one 5 x 10 maybe 2/3 full........$170. It'll do OK.

Got one 10 x 20 with maybe 30 really clean totes, 20 boxes, small furn, two bikes, etc. This one I could have had for about $450 but the other big bidder thought she could outbid me (she's fairly new). So, when I got it for $675 I was happy and she now has (hopefully) a lingering impression of what I might go for. This lkr will come out quite nicely I think. I looked in 8 totes and found 3 with clothing (nicely folded) and the other 5 with usual household, but quality stuff; hopefully the 22 other totes and boxes will bear out the quality I'm looking for.

So, now to work....and posting here only at night for the next 5 days or so....4 total lkrs to clean out including yesterday's with the motorcycle. :-[

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Craigslist
« on: May 05, 2011, 09:04:09 AM »
If your city is large enough to have its own listings, go to that.
Then do a search for either "auctions" or "Storage Auctions".

That should bring up a number of items.
If there are none in your immediate area it may show ones close by.

If your city isn't large enough to have its own listings, there is a list of states and cities on the right side of the screen and it is a simple matter to step your way through it.

I think I've only sold one on eBay, and yes it was a personalized, but general enough that anyone could use it
in a rec room or workshop. Mine was something like GunStore or some such.

As I recall a message pops up from eBay when you are trying to post it giving a warning (or maybe denying it).

In California you can check with DMV online to see if a personalized plate is available or not; maybe other states too.
