There is a delicate balance between spam and blending the marketing in with useful information. Like for example, if I were to mention that www.storageauctionblog.com has recently gone live and I would appreciate your opinions on how the site looks, this would probably fall into that grey area.

With some % point leaning to the dark side.....?

Not to try and steal this thread, I just did not feel like making a thread to ask this.

We have 1980 members on this forum, However since I been here I can very well count my fingers to the number of active users. The rest cant be spam can it? How come there is not more post?

I started a thread to address this question.

Here's the link:

In the 10 minutes since you posted this note, the member count has probably gone to 1990 and when we're done writing and reading this, more will have joined.

I think there are about 20 people who post on a somewhat regular basis and maybe 10 or so who post on a very regular basis, you and I among them. I think there are another 10 to 20 who post once in awhile.

So, maybe 40 or 50 posters?  That doesn't mean (in my opinion) that the rest of them are spammers; there are many lurkers who just like to read and learn...I don't know how many that would be out of the 1900 + members, but I don't believe there are 1850+ spammers.

Forum administrators have access to a variety of reports on who is using the service, with what regularity, etc. I don't know much about that aspect, but I know if it was my forum I would be on top of that.

In another little "hijack" of my own, I hope Drew never institutes an opportunity for "live chat" in this forum. Given the nature of some of our members (including me) I think it would be a disaster zone in live time!  ;D

I realize he meant no harm, however SPAM is SPAM.

Gravell....I hear what you are saying and by definition, spam is spam, however I think intent has to be considered a bit too. I don't necessarily excuse what jose did, but as I said above, I don't condem it that much either.

There are several people on this forum who either have or do promote their services one way or another. I don't need to mention them by name, anyone who reads the threads on a regular basis knows them.

When Drew said (some weeks ago) that he didn't have a problem with a link being in someone's signature line, I accept that as sort of a bottom line on the spam definition. It certainly isn't as obnoxious or obvious as having the link in each and every post; it doesn't jump out at us as obviously.

Another poster hardly does any promoting any more as he did in the earlier days.

Perhaps more importantly (to me at least) the folks being highlighted in this post ALSO have meaningful things to say about the auction buying (and goods selling) experience.  THIS may be "fine-lining" what SPAM is, but that's my point.
There may be some leeway in looking at SPAM.

Regular readers here know I will knock and label spam when I see it, but I'm open to looking at what truly is spam as well.

On a somewhat related note, this forum is very lenient on thread hijacking. I've belonged to forums where if a poster started going in a different direction in a thread, some of the moderators came down hard on that poster. I think the leniency here is much better but like you (gravell) I would have a hard time with the lines being loosened too much on spam.

Long response, but hope some "meat" in it for all of us.

Someone asked me why I was doing this...posting suspected spammer's/member's names.

I'm doing it because I think it may help to someday eliminate not only a single spammer, but maybe a bulk of them in one shot.

If I ever have a website/forum of my own, I would want to know how to watch for these people and I'm hoping Drew is exploring those possibilities now.  The two groups of people I have targeted in this thread have definite patterns to their screen names, and not a one of them has really posted any kind of meaningful thought about storage auctions.

They sometimes join and never leave any kind of link to their spam product, but sometimes they come back a few hours, days or weeks later and add that material. Some of them have links right off the bat that not only try to sell something, but have malware products built in that try to gather OUR private info, even if it is an email address. They can either SELL our addressess or they can then spam us directly through our email addy.

If I ever post the name of someone who ACTUALLY is interested in storage auctions (and proves it through legitimate postings) I will BE THE FIRST to admit my mistake.  So far that hasn't happened. I have even emailed some of these people  asking them to post about their storage auction experiences...so far no one has responded either here or privately to me.

Just a bit of explanation for why I go to this effort.

The Lounge / Re: Bin Laden Killed!
« on: May 04, 2011, 09:58:24 AM »
Ironman makes several good points and I would only add this:

I don't believe it would be in anyone's interest to lie about Bin Laden's death. That is, I don't believe the government (whether they were democrats or republicans) would say he was dead if he was alive.

The reason I say this is that IF he was captured alive and they said he was killed, there would be HELL to pay if (when) it later came out that they had been questioning him and had LIED about his death. If you lied about something like that, what ELSE would you lie about.

I think it's probably better to have him dead than alive because if he was captured alive we would all (especially the relatives of those killed on 9/11) have to go through the agony of seeing this criminal go through the process of a trial.
In my opinion he had his trial in that 40 minute raid and those seconds of finality when our guys took him down.

While we as a people can't really condone going in and taking out some one like Libya's leader, it's nice to know we do have the guts to go into Pakistan and take out Bin Laden. No kid gloves here when not letting Pakistan know we were coming...no doubt in my mind they would have let him know. Good job guys!

Tuesday, May 3, 2011....

They do it again. A 1984 Yamaha snowmobile....under a cover; rest of locker was crap furniture. Can you say setup?

Next locker...Robby the Robot, first a repro, then the original.  Oh no, Shoeless Joe Jackson stuff....these guys
have their own MINT when it comes to finding good stuff. As my old granny used to say..."take me out and bury me decent."

Hank Aaron autographed baseball!

1920 ball glove....IF Joe Jackson would be worth 15 to 20K.

I need to follow these guys and just outbid them!

Reality Shows about Storage Auctions / Re: Dave Hester Auctions
« on: May 03, 2011, 07:28:51 PM »
There are several threads about both shows and a couple of interesting points in each one.

More than one thread has had someone who talked to a show "associate" and the indication was that the auction was held first, then they went back and recreated it for the cameras. The same guys would have won each time, but still....bending it right there instead of shooting it as it happened. I don't remember which of the two shows that was...maybe both.

Dave and Jarrod both have stores and they represent the opposite ends from a dollar standpoint. Darrel appears to have been doing it for some years. I saw one thread somewhere (not here) where someone seemed to actually know D and son; said the son was a drug addict at one time. By the way, Dave did a 30 day community service at Goodwill for some violation...could have been bad driving or almost anything; they showed that in a recent episode as he took some clothes to Goodwill and mentioned it himself.

Barry is there for color I'm sure. He loses on a regular basis. We don't know if these guys get paid or not or if the price they pay for the lkrs is provided by the show's producers.

Yes, the same four guys are there, and that's just a convention of the show. People (IMHO) want familiarity and they want to love or hate a character on a regular basis...we need to get to know the  guys and we can only do that if they are always there.

What we do know is the shows are successful and will be around for a while yet.

Dont forget that 24 Karat solid gold jack :)

Hah!  You mean the red one or the black one?  I'll scratch the paint on both!  ;D

Good locker!

Almost a true Auction Hunter locker. LOL Just kidding!

Nope, to be an Auction Hunter the motorcycle would have to be in RESTORED condition. I wouldn't mind getting one of those,
but didn't happen today.  Also, the tackle box would have to have had 20 vintage lures, the love seat would have to have been from the 1850s with Mark Twain's name carved in the wood.

Jose...

Sorry guy, but I think it's spam. Now if you persisted in posting it all over the place, there wouldn't be any doubt at all, but as it is, I personally am not inclined to include any Spam type graphics in this thread like I do in others.

Remember, don't spend that rent money !

3387
Nope, no lures worth putting on eBay. But it's always fun (for a moment anyway) popping open ANY box hoping for the best Cracker Jack prize ever !  ;D

The red and black wool jacket is a Pendleton...too bad it's not winter!

3388
So what your saying is that your wallet was saved by luck from the problem your pride got you into?

Well, what I am ACTUALLY saying is that the second locker saved me because I didn't read the first lkr correctly.

The 1885 Gustav Becker clock I show in the What's It Worth thread came from the $1200 lkr, but unfortunately it was the most valuable piece in there and there were no more antiques worth very much.

It's a gamble, but the Gustav is going to take a big chunk off the $1200 (hopefully) and the other items will help too, then the profit from the $325 lkr can take care of more and maybe even make some money.

Got a 10 x 15 today for $300 and I think it will turn out OK.

First two auctions in May for me.

First one had a crowd of only 20 or so people and this was one of the 4 major auctioneers. A GOOD sign.
On the other hand, 10 of the people were high bidders!

Five lkrs....a 10 x 10 (I think) went for $900. It was older furniture (antiquey) BUT the lkr owner had painted it.

I got one, a 10 x 15, only full about 1/2 way (the length) and 3 feet high.

For more details see this link:

********

Drove another 25 miles to the 2nd auction which had fewer people (some of them different people) and 9 lkrs, 2 of which were manager lkrs. (one newbie asked what that was and we let him know (nicely)).

One lkr had about 10 to 15 mattress sets in it; they were new (mostly in plastic) went for $425 I think. A 5 x 10 went for $600. It had the famous "crystal" box in it. A regular for that area got it, but I'm pretty sure he wasn't thinking "crystal" all the way through. It was a 2 x2 x 3 feet high box. Would YOU put real "crystal" in a big and therefore heavy box like that, or would you put it in a box 18" square all the way around?  I think this "crystal" was a person's name.

Then a 10 x 15 packed with older furniture (again "antiquey") went for about $475....looked OK at that price.

So, the crowd smaller on this day, and prices pretty good. Things may be looking up.
