Well, you're just a grumpy old man with nothing nice to say about anyone. All you ever do is criticize everything that goes against the grain . You always have to be right and you always have to get the last word.

Oh no, not another boxing ring !

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Lookey Loos Part 4....April, 2011
« on: April 26, 2011, 01:34:43 PM »
Went to an auction today that had 4 lkrs and about 20 bidders. Four of the bidders including me were regulars, 2 were newbie regulars who have been coming for 2 months.

The first 3 lkrs were nothing special; I didn't bid and  I don't even remember what they went for except for one empty lkr with an entertainment center (particle board) that went for $1.

The 4th lkr was a 5 wide by 10 deep and was packed with big stuff. Couldn't see behind it or over it, so don't know if smalls were there or not. I thought I would go $500 at max feeling I could break even if nothing else.

Started at $25 or so and quickly went to $300 with newbies bidding. Before I could offer $500 one of the 2-month old newbies offered $500. Didn't take him long to learn that trick; he might have seen me do it 4 times in the last 8 weeks; it didn't work then either.

Not a blink, the bids kept going but now a regular was involved and it went up to $750 pretty fast between the 2-month old newbie and the regular. Newb dropped out and....A NEW PERSON no one had seen before came in at $800. She looked like she might have been related to the lkr somehow; well dressed, not a loser.

Anyway, she went with the regular up to $925 (regular bid) and did'nt come back at $950, so regular got it.

***********
The rest of this story is that the regular's husband had told me before the auction that he had been having serious talks
with his wife about getting out of the biz because of the prices, etc. This might cinch that leaving if the lkr doesn't pan out. I'll see them next Saturday at the flea, so maybe I'll have a later report.

Still crazy in my neck of the woods both from newbs and regulars !

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: $625 for a 5' X 10' Locker

Yep, might have been high. That's roughly $30 a tote so depending on what's inside them, a bit of a gamble, but I've seen it done and I've done it myself since I prefer smalls to furniture.

I went to an auction today that had a similar situation. See the Lookey Loos #4 thread for details.

Here's the thread link; see post #38 for today's report; 4/26/2011

Sleeklike whom I noted in post 12 above actually stayed on line here for a few minutes and added his website (in Russian) which translates to "handmade soap".

This guy has a lot of profile info in Greek (too much to translate).

Amazing what these flakes will do...and to what end? Do they actually think that even if someone goes to their
website that we would actually BUY soap or acne medication from them. Of course they may have other nefarious ends they are trying to achieve also like hacking into accounts to get financial info etc.

I don't know if there is any software a forum admin can use to detect and delete these folks, but I hope so. Doing
so manually would really be time consuming.

Flea Markets / Re: How do you price clothing at flea markets?
« on: April 25, 2011, 10:45:55 PM »
If I sell clothing, it's sports jackets (Lakers, etc) and they are usually extra clean. Sometimes I will try them on eBay first, sometimes not. If they are the kind that sell for $100 at the store I usually ask $40 and stick to it.

I only sell new T-Shirts (ones that have never been worn) and depending on the design I ask $2 to $4.

I sell uniform jackets, pants, etc. A used olive colored jacket with fur collar worn  by some police, etc goes for $80 new and again I ask $40 and go from there.

Jeans, for me they have to be Levis. New with tags I get $15 and stick to that price. They don't want to pay it, someone else will. Used Levis, $5 to $8. Again I stick with the prices.

All other clothing (unless double deluxe) goes in black garbage bags and sells by the bag to the clothing lady across from me for $5 a bag. She can make $40 or more, but I don't have to hang them, sort them (possibly clean them) etc.

My best sale was probably a crew jacket (from a movie crew) for an Industrial Light and Magic film...don't remember the title. Got $100 for that on eBay.

Name brand sneakers (Nike, Vans, etc) usually $20 to $30 if they are $60 to $80 shoes. Best was $70 (or so) for a pair of green Fighting Irish shoes...on eBay.

Hope this helps.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Roadtrip this week
« on: April 25, 2011, 08:44:02 PM »
Many of the regulars from my area (Chattanooga) go to Nashville and Atlanta on a regular basis, I have heard from some that Huntsville, Alabama has better stuff in lkrs, and smaller crowds + lower winning bid amounts than both Chattanooga and Nashville. One guy in the biz has been hitting Atlanta pretty hard because of the rumors of better quality stuff in lkrs, and so far he has been hauling a lot of the same junk, at higher bid prices back to Chattanooga. Although others have had some success getting good stuff in Atlanta. I have not taken the drive myself because at this time I can not justify that the extra fuel costs, and time spent will be recouped by better quality stuff in lkrs from those cities. I suppose if you have a big truck and buy multiple units you can spread the fuel costs across them, but I don't see it. I think someone on this forum said, "it doesn't matter what part of the country you are in, most lkrs have the same junk in them."

On a side note, we have been getting an influx of people into our area attending auctions from Florida, and North Carolina because they heard lkrs in our area are going cheap compared to where they are from! I had to bid against guys from Florida on the last unit I won!

Good Luck!

Aside from some "pockets" here and there, everything you said rings true with me. Count me in with the folks
who say the junk (and treasure) is the same the country over. Yes, there are good lockers, and yes we each get them now and again in one level of "goodness" or another, but chasing from one town to another isn't for me. The more I see, the more the local ones look good...local might mean a 30 mile radius to me...might mean a 100 mile radius to someone else. Everyone has a view as to what works and what doesn't. Each person has to discover for him/herself what works for them.

Movieman had a really informative post about this topic. Actually I think it was someone elses post and I kinda hijacked the thread with my own question but he had some good info and experience with titling a dirt bike, four wheeler and maybe a car if I remeber correctly.

Couldn't find it looking but then again I'm lazy and didnt look that hard lol. Maybe movieman can link to to it.

This is the link, but it only provides a little insight into Travis' question. I don't know anymore about this than I
included in that thread, but my educated guess is that there are so many circumstances (variations) that each case will probably have to be treated differently. This I do know: it's complicated.

My input on the lien situation started in reply #9 in the thread below.

Aha.....once again I looked too quickly. Now that I see the For Sale section that Gravell mentioned and clicked on that for my area I saw some items for sale. (found 64 items within 10 miles of my zipcode)

So, it's like Craigslist only with more graphics.

Then there was that MyYardSale website that Mr. A mentioned also. I guess there are quite a few venues for selling things with no listing fees.

So, if a few of the forum readers join this newest one maybe there will be some reports on how well it goes.

C'mon, you have to admit, that was pretty funny!

Maybe if I had gotten past the first 6 lines I would have gotten it, but didn't and am moving on again.
The picture was funny.

I clicked on the San Francisco city link and looked quickly at the first page contents.

The first one was an ad for a guy who would haul trash to the dump.

The rest were solictations for people wanting to sell you their money-making ideas, a condo rental in florida, etc.

Didn't see any actual ads for an item sale, but they might have been in there somewhere on later pages.

Edit:

Just looked at Memphis. Two different temp agencies looking for a variety of workers...could be helpful to someone looking for a job who is doing auctions now to make some living money.

Also, people selling books, ideas, etc

Again, might be items somewhere but I didn't find them.

It will take a few people joining and a month or two of trying it to see any results of course, but let us know how it turns out.

The Treasure Chest / Re: Got a unit on Friday

Anyone on here have trouble moving higher end furniture/items?  My dilemma is, do I hold out for a high price, or sell it at a quick price?  I have the couch/love seat on CList for $800.  In the 10 lockers I have bought, none of them had higher end items, so I guess I'm new to this aspect of the biz.

There are several people on the forum (and in my area) who would advise you to sell the items cheaper to clear the inventory and make room for more. Usually, these are folks who buy a dozen a month (or even a week) and who NEED to clear up room on a regular basis.

I think you have the answer already and just need confirmation. Considering the lack of room and the price you paid for the lkr, selling a little cheaper seems like the right idea. I don't know how you have grouped the furniture at the 800 level, but if you have several groupings you could reduce the price on one and see how quickly it went, and then follow suit on the other groups or not.

Basically, with the quality and quantity you got, you have some options. Only you can decide how much you need out of the items and the working space you have.

Well, so far 3 of the regular 10 to 15 posters have responded; would be enlightening to hear from the huge silent majority or even the additional 10 to 15 posters (who would fall in the 16 to 30 rankings of posters).

I think this is an area that really deserves some answers; not only are you interested in it, but the paid advertisers and Drew would be too.

Maybe as the number of folks who view the thread goes up the responses will start to come in.
