Storage Auctioneers / Re: Banning a bidder from an auction ?
« on: April 19, 2011, 09:31:49 AM »

Stay tuned!  When I get a firm airing date for this episode of Judge Judy, I'll dig up this thread again and put it in here!

That WILL be an interesting show to watch!  I've watched a few of her episodes and the cases and the judge are always entertaining. Amazing what people will do and then try to sue about.

Legal notices in my area don't often list contents and I would guess that is true elsewhere for the most part.

As far as Saturday vs. weekday auctions....in my area a Saturday auction is a RARITY. I think the storage places know that the majority of buyers are SELLING on weekends and therefore need to buy during the week. This eliminates a lot of people who are otherwise employed of course. Conditions may vary in your area.

When you get started you will start learning quickly. Watch what other people buy and do.

Well, there are always more of this kind than there are of the best ones (or even the better ones).

The good news is the newbies paid what they were worth rather than some inflated price.

All we can do is keep going, hope for good lkrs and good crowds.

Be interesting to see where our new northern California member is from...says he is going to do this full time !

Just saw a preview of the Tuesday, April 19, 2011 episode coming up.

Ft. Lauderdale, Fl is the site and apparently the guys run up against a "pro" buyer....hope that guy beats them out on a couple.

They apparently get one with gambling equipment in it....naturally, for some reason, it is worth $7K.

This show continues to disappoint, but I'll continue to watch on the off chance they start getting realistic. :P

This is an Associated Press story in today's (4/18/2011) papers. When I looked it up with google, the first
listing was from an Australian paper.  ??? The outlet is in Scottsboro, Alabama. A long trip for the Austrailian readers !

Here's the link. If you live near this ONE outlet you could pick up a good deal and resell it. Funny that items from all over the usa probably then get on a plane again (or certainly a truck) to go to Alabama.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Bidding still high in my area!

Sounds like the typical lkr situation in many parts of the country....your final pt on the prices sounds similar to my area in California. Also, the fact that 25 miles away (or so) the picture can be different. The problem is that the serious buyers of these units have no problem driving 25 miles or 90 miles to get a better selection and hopefully a lkr for a good price.

I stopped going futher than 30 miles or so. The lkrs and prices seem pretty much the same within 100 miles of me and by the time you consider gas and time and probably not getting a great one at a reasonable price, you can do better by just staying home.

The link I provide in this post is a document telling people how to drive business to THEIR website.
focuses on joining forums and gives specifics on how to wiggle your way into forums in order
to then further YOUR blog or forum.

I think a large number (in the hundreds?) of the near 2000 members here are just folks like this.

One post I saw in our threads from a new member (some clothing salesman) said "good point". This person had no more interest in auction lkrs than the man in the moon, but this is one of the tips in the link below. Join, slowly post, etc.

Anyway, here's the link:

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Any suggestions when you see a safe?
« on: April 18, 2011, 08:21:25 AM »
An auction friend got a large safe...maybe 4 feet tall and 2 feet square. This sucker was obviously heavy, but he has a lift gate on his box truck.

He checked with a lock/key company who wanted $75 at a minimum to try to open it through the combination. If they can't figure out the combo, they drill out the dial. There is that labor and then the cost of a new dial...$75 and up.

If the safe is empty you have spent $150 or more getting it open and keeping it resellable. Then they appear not to resell very easily. The key company had 100 safes in the back of their store and maybe 30 up front. The key guys told my friend they rarely sold a safe.  Gun safes sell better, but again the really good ones are expensive and I doubt you'll find one in a locker. The cheap gun safes are found though. When I got into one I got (an easy pry job) it had a pellet rifle, some ammo (regular) and a flack jacket. The jacket was a small sized military model and sold on eBay to a small person ! It also contained empty pistol cases and pistol manuals....those sell well on eBay.

Friend who had the big safe sold it for scrap metal since in had a big 6" hold in the front door.  Did I mention the dollar value of the time he spent on the safe?

He bought the locker SOLELY on the basis a safe was in it...lkr only contained a few other boxes. He thought it was worth the gamble for the $80 lkr cost. Turned out it wasn't, but it COULD have been a big winner.

Just about everything has been said already, but if you want more info on safes, just do a search within these threads for the word "safe". The top results will be about the kind of safe you are talking about....the rest will deal with "are things safe."  The search engine is a great way to find info on any number of topics here.

I have gotten half a dozen safes in as many years. Most were empty or had useless (to me) papers. Many of the briefcase fire safes are found and can be opened with a tire iron. Not much point in trying anything else, as these sell for $25 or so new at Target, Wal-Mart.

One I got was about 24" tall by 18" square and was on the back wall of the locker. If you see them up front, they are almost guaranteed to be empty.  I had someone use an acetylene torch on the bottom of this one and once you get through the METAL there is usually a cement or clay like material to get through with a hammer. Eventually, you will get inside. Many safes of this size or larger have a counter or drawer near the top and of course you want to get in that too, so more work would be involved.

If I remember correctly this safe contained about $200 or so in coins, cash, gold jewelry and a small frame OLD revolver (rusted) in a cardboard box...threw it
away.

Yep, reader's who care (and a few do while others just move on) can check there. I just posted there and will make a similar post here as well.

At about 4:15 Sunday the 17th of April, 2011 I sent a private message to Mr. A explaining in some detail why I had called him out over the last month or two. I will not go into the details here. That is between Mr. A and I.

I have not heard back from him yet, but I think (because of some questions he had asked me in a private message he sent me a few days ago) that we were/are in the same ballpark as far as getting this off the threads. On that we certainly agree as it truly is not fun for anyone to read.

Anyway, I think Mr. A did a great job in his thread on getting rid of a video camera in detailing the tribulations and cost of a lkr he bought last December. That kind of balanced reporting is a lot easier to absorb than shows like Auction Hunters (especially in the last couple of weeks with a quad and a hovercraft obtained in 2 lkrs in the same episode!).

So, I don't think there is a need for mouth protectors, helmets, gloves or smelling salts. I for one will not be calling Mr. A out in the future. It's enough of a battle just getting a good lkr.

*****

And for reader's who originally read this thread for the REASON it was started in the first place, PLEASE don't buy a lkr and then abandon it for others to clean up. This can only have bad results....again, IN MY OPINION.

No need for that. In fact I decided against starting a thread to let others know what is happening, but since you started it, I'll add to it. I am also posting in 2 other spots that have been read and commented on by other members in an effort to defuse the situation.

Mr.A and I are going to engage in a private message exhange this weekend.

I am just back from selling at a flea market and told him earlier I would send him something
late Saturday or Sunday. He and I both agree (along with others here) that it is detrimental to
the overall health of the forums and everyone concerned so hopefully we will be able to work something out.
