Help!

In my army locker i found a thing that i am not sure what is worth. And when trying to google or ebay it for something close to it, nothing shows up.

Take a look at the pic, i have never seen anything like it before. Can anyone help out here?

When I follow your link it takes me to a photo of a metal man on a metal motorcycle. Is that the one you mean you need help with. When looking at the five photos in the album I see the yellow lensed item which you have pictured and asked about before in a different thread.

What should be be looking at....?  A brief descripition in words would help us narrow it down to the photo to examine.

Seems like that when the auctioneer starts off at 50 or 25 If I just jump in at 150 or 200 it immediately scares the newbies (90%) out and thins the bids. Bow what I do when I do that is bump the bid at 50% of what I want to pay for the unit so I still have bidding room. Its a mind game  for the newbits.

I tried that recently. When bidding got to $200, I said $500 thinking that might do it, but there was only the briefest of pauses and on it went. A newbie got it for $1100 (give or take), so it didn't work that time. Hopefully, he'll get burned a bit on that one and will think harder before the next one.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Has anyone ever bought a POD?
« on: April 11, 2011, 05:31:41 PM »
rfr .... in response to your post #13 in this thread.

This is (I think) hijacking the POD thread, so I'll keep it brief, and my response only relates to my experience with the quad.

Honda Finance (in Georgia) told me that they had archived the account 5 years before I started talking with them on the phone. They said they would need something from California DMV showing DMV would be OK with me getting a release of interest from Honda.

DMV said they could provide nothing to Honda, that Honda would need to contact them releasing the interest. It went on like this for about 3 months, back and forth written communication. This was after I had spent about 6 months just dealing with 3 different depts at DMV until it got to the right one. (also docs were lost in the DMV mailroom !).

Finally, after a couple of more months of these two not talking to each other, I got ahold of a VP of fianance at Honda in California and faxed him copies of all my docs to DMV and the Honda Georgia office. The NEXT day I had a FedEX in my hands from Georgia with the release of interest.

After that it was easy with DMV. Eleven months of red tape; listed the quad on eBay classified. It ran, expired in 10 days and THEN I got a call from a prospective buyer. Sold it ! Thanks, eBay!

You could start a thread asking the question you asked. Basic answer is...it will vary on state DMVs, whether there were back taxes owed, stolen vehicle, etc. It's complicated !

The Harley look-alike I got I told DMV it was in crates when I got it (as parts). I put it together, etc. What the story was with its old owner I don't know, but there were no past dues on it, and it went through smoothly. The bike in the quad locker had no money owed on it and hadn't been active for years, so they let me have it with the receipt from the auction.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: New guy in Austin TX.
« on: April 11, 2011, 02:30:27 PM »
A friend of mine used to sell new purses from a different flea market and she said that she would make around 8K every weekend. Another guy that I know also sold purses at flea markets and he was making around 10K every weekend. Apparently, the discount purse business is a good business to be in, especially at rural flea markets.

Sign me up for the $32K to $40K purse business. I would love to make that much a month.  ::)

rfr....

The keys were in the ignitions with plastic tie-wraps making a big loop as a key-chain. This of course was great as re-keying or getting new locks with new keys would have hurt the profit.

Several years before that I got a Harley lookalike (3/4 size) in a locker; auctioneer went in to look at it and found the keys and paperwork in a baggie on the seat. The locker was sold with the bike "as parts" so that way they didn't have to do any lien work on it and postpone that part for a later sale date.

I went to dmv and they showed it was clear (no bank owed on it) and it had no back taxes. They signed it over to me with no problems. Lkr cost $600, I sold the bike for $500 to the property manager at MY permanent storage and the rest of the lkr did really well too. It was one of the 8 or so MEMORABLE lockers I have gotten in 7 years doing this.

Ironman...your reply in #14 above makes sense for me too, but around here anymore, we are having to be happy with making a 20% profit (maybe) instead of doubling our money. Still crazy here for the most part, though the crowds MAY be smaller. The rest of April will help show the trend I hope.

One auctineer told me that the newbies are affecting the lower priced lockers (say $25 to $300 or so) but paying more for them than they are worth, but he feels the higher priced lockers ($700 to $1500 or so) are still going to the more experienced buyers (with some exceptions of course). Still, the bread and butter items we depend on are often in those cheaper lockers...with the occasional BONUS beauties thrown in.

Going to 5 or 6 facilites on Tuesday, Wed, Thurs this week, April 12 to 15, 2011 so will report back here on crowds and prices.

I think I read about this approach somewhere else in this forum. Might do a search for sealed bid and see what other threads come up.

I agree with the others. Run away fast...too many chances for mischief.

You COULD be in the last group to go through though; at least that way you would be able to wait for the outcome, but the idea that the other bids are not told to you is BAD ! But if in the last group you could pay for it and lock it up....unless they just were firm and said "we'll call you".

I think I would just pass on that facility.

Edit: How many people were there that they had to take them through in groups? What size were groups?

I noticed we have a POD Auction in two weeks, and I have never been to a POD Auction yet. Has anyone here every done a POD Auction? What to expect? Are they worth going too? Are they too much of a gamble? How did you do with your POD?

Hey Gravell....

One of my eight or so really MEMORABLE lkrs was a POD.  I paid $2500 for it based on the Honda Quad which was visible right at the door (its back end). I paid that because I figured I could get about $3K for it and it boded well for the other contents.

I had the POD folks deliver the POD to a 30 day special storage lkr near my home. That was fun to watch when they offloaded it.  When I got inside I also found a Honda dirt bike (smaller type, but in perfect condition like the qaud). The locker paid off well. I got $2500 for the quad, $700 for the bike, $250 for a Ruger target .22, and other good items. Total profit on the POD was $1800.  It took me 11 months to clear the quad with dmv and Honda finance. Bike cleared right away.

So yes, they can be good, but I have also seen standard household PODs as well, so not a guarantee. I bought another one a few months later for $350 I think it was and I only made $200 profit on it. It was not full. That location is now gone and nearest POD place is about 40 miles away.

Went to one today with 5 units. Crowd not bad....maybe 25 people.

Lkr #4 was good, good, good ! It was a 5 x 15 packed with tools from front to back.
Several red roll-aways, smaller tool boxes, tools hanging from ceiling (new torch head and heavy yellow tubes) and at the back floor to ceiling wall to wall banker boxes, marked with typical household.

The overall impression of this one was how Neat or Clean it was...to me that always says a lot, but also means a high price. I was the last one to look at it and the auctioneer asked me what I thought it would go for. I said 1,500 to 2 (K) but tempered it with "but since there are only half the number of heavy hitters today, maybe less".

Bided my time and thought I would go to 1200 or so but thought it would go higher and it did...$1500 even.
At that price it will probably break even (I think) but another guy said he didn't think it would and he would have paid $500....even 8 months ago it wouldn't have gone that cheap. Anyway, a nice clean tool lkr and I would loved to have had it, but working for free on the chance of a few hundred profit just doesn't make sense to me (though I've done it before !). The red roll-aways were not Snap-On or anything, but even Craftsman sells, and at 500 pieces at $3 each would clear the lkr.  ::)

If anyone deserves a good locker it's a teacher.  :)

Is no one reading my posts? haha. Im asking HOW? And what does SPS stand for? How do you report taxes monthly ect...

Thanks

My guess is that people who are not responding don't wish to share how they handle their finances.

Interesting, professionally made video showing Dave in action. His store operation seems to have a real
flow to it (sorting, pricing, throwing stuff in trash bin (plastic hangers anyone?).

I read all the comments below the video as well. Some people don't have a problem bad-mouthing this guy.

Several suggested his Hispanic workers (nacho ?) might be less than legal. Personally, I doubt a business of that size would take a chance on hiring illegals.

What the heck happen!?!?!?!?! Did we get hijacked by another forum or something?????

The other forum in question is designed primarily for auctioneers and storage property managers and provides their
view of what is happening in this industry. Some interesting stories there from the property managers.

Seriously who doesn't pay the storage bill for their hovercraft????? and the way it was covered with that tarp and miscellaneous boxes of junk... definite headscratcher. But hey it's entertaining and I will definitely watch every episode this season.

The more I think about the hovercraft and quad episdoe the more discouraged I am about this series. I used to like it better than Storage Wars, but now it's the other way around.  Just TOO, TOO good to be true. BUT, I will continue to watch just to learn about items (even with inflated values) and to be able to complain about how unrealistic the show is.  ::)
