New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Warehouse not taking bids
« on: January 30, 2011, 06:24:55 PM »
That's a new one on me. Maybe they will sell it off on their own instead of having an auction. Or maybe the auction will come later with this just being a notice to the "owner" that they are out of time.

Fuhgedaboutit !

Going to auctions Wed, Thur, Friday next week and Mon, Tues, Wednesday the week after.
Hopefully get ONE locker out of that, but crowds will be the main factor.

Thanks for the report. Sounds like the split between two sets of auctions was a good thing.
Waiting works...there will always be more auctions...crowd control is another matter.

Looks like as of late January, 2011 I'm the only Californian doing any posting in these forums (that I've seen anyway) so thought I might as well start a thread. Maybe it will encourage "lurkers" to join in.

I buy auction units from Tracy, CA north to Sacramento, CA and in between.

Anybody else willing to chime in ?

So I'm new to storage auctions and I was wondering if someone could answer something for me.

I'm going to a a series of 13 locations tomorrow with between 100 and 155 units up for grabs.  This same company had over 80 units auctioned off today.  Will it be likely that there will be less competition tomorrow?

So archives....what was the result of the Jan 28 auction you went to?

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Sunday Auction that sucked
« on: January 30, 2011, 04:24:00 PM »
In my area the PS are more highly regarded. They are known NOT to enter the lockers like some of the independent operators (and some of the chains). Thus, regional differences, but good warnings to be aware of no matter what state you are in.

The venting...we all need it, but I am getting closer to just waiting it out for the crowds to go down.
I have a backlog of goods for those days when the auctions are sparse...now the backlog is coming out because the crowds are huge and no new goods added for a couple of weeks from auctions.

Here are a couple of blogs from A*E about the Storage Wars show. Both start with very negative posts. I don't know if they are both from the same person or not...didn't look that close.

In the first one the guy (toward the bottom of his post) says to this effect..."...my partner and I have bought 500 units and haven't made any real money yet."

I guess it depends on your definition of real money, but after a few hundred buys if you're not making any money to speak of, either change your approach or approach McDonalds for a job.

I don't know if I forgot to put in the links or if an admin took them out. See if I can find them again.

edit:

Here they are:

This is a cut and paste from a response I gave in another forum, but I think it might deserve its own thread in case the new and old want to respond to this phenomenon.

C&P:

Newbies will be run up and that's a fact. Been going on for years, not just since the tv shows.
Logic is to have them spend their money, get a lesson in economics and move on. It's a business not a charity organization of like minded entrepreneurs.

Meanwhile, look at this side of bidding someone up. Sometimes the person trying to take the other person for a ride will get STUCK with the unit when the other bidder stops bidding. You have to know how to read people...know when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em.

I saw an experienced buyer do this just the other day. He winked at me when he bid $400 for a locker that I would have paid $200 for. His face quickly changed when the other guy stopped and my friend got his $400 lkr. I offered him $200 for it but he decided to tough it out. I have seen people cut their losses though and this is yet another way of making money.

By the way, experienced bidders will do this to other experienced bidders. Some bidders are hogs who want to get every locker; if this is the case some of the other old timers will make them pay for the privelege. Once again, it's a business not a tea party.

If the 2 tv shows featured your buy the number of "bidders" would plummet!

Sorry you got this one, but may I ask what intrigued you about it? The mattresses immediately turn me off unless I see a Snap-On rollaway (even if empty).

If a $1 move in special (and from the contents) it might have been an auction buyer who didn't care about his future rep there and found it cheaper than the dump.

Other Forms of Selling / Re: Anyone seen Pawn Queens?
« on: January 30, 2011, 01:34:36 PM »
Despite Pawn Stars and others the general feeling about pawn shops is a negative one, and I will stop in once in a while to see if items they have for sale offer me any opportunities, but I have found it pretty rare to score there either for resale or for myself.

When I first started I took a piece of gold to three pawns and then to a coin/gold shop. The pawn offers were all over the place and I have been doing biz with the gold place for 7 years now.

Craigslist / Re: Do you sell small dollar items on craigslist?
« on: January 30, 2011, 01:29:27 PM »
Nope, not worth it to me and I only drive 1 mile to my storage unit where I sell Clist items from.

Will the buyers in Minnesota please stand up?

Thank you.

4034
He should have...don't know what happened after that, except for the fact that at auctions from then on Buyer B paid for a few lockers as I took him to the top of the roller-coaster hill before he fell off the top with the winning bid. What goes around comes around in one form or the other.

What's it Worth?? / Re: 3D Picture/Sculpture of The Last Supper
« on: January 30, 2011, 01:22:04 PM »
Every seller of goods from General Motors to Flea Market Joe does "profiling" though it has a different, more educated moniker I'm sure. Buyer assessment, etc.

But I can guarantee you this as well. If I have an item I think I can get $40 for at the flea from an upscale buyer, I won't sell it for the first $25 that is offered to me from a less well-healed type no matter what the ethnic or religious persuasion.
