Stories about Storage Auctions / What would you have paid for this locker ?
« on: November 01, 2013, 09:40:19 AM »
This was a 10 x 10. The left half is shown (front to back) in the pics. The right side of the locker was flattened cardboard boxes.

People estimated how many planters x what they THOUGHT they could sell them for and bid accordingly.

You?

Stories about Storage Auctions / Auction Scene #11.....November, 2013

Beautiful fall weather begins.....hopefully the only turkey this month will be on Thanksgiving !

I hoping that as the temps drop the people stay home in the heat. Around here, we can see temps as low as 30ish.. Although it only seems to last a month or two.. We won't see temps like that until January, but hopefully a few brisk 40ish days in Nov./Dec. is enough to keep the wusses at home.

It will keep a few away but there will be more (like you) thinking the same thing, so don't be surprised if the crowd is still large.

Around my area "winter" just means rain and the same thought prevails...turns out a lot of people will brave the rain thinking others will stay at home. One buy was so bundled up (with a parka hood drawn around his face) I couldn't even tell who it was until he made a bid !

Other Forms of Selling / Re: Using Facebook to sell. Works great!

Exactly! There are open groups where you can see posts before joining, but these yard sale groups are largely closed groups to weed out spammers. Once you join a group, Facebook suggests other groups in the right margin specific to your area.

OK, tried your search suggestion to the word with my city inserted and got a list of results.  Here's one that I have boiled down to its lowest level which can just be used by any of you in a url approach. It will take you to the main page which then allows you to choose by state and then by city. Pretty extensive I think.  I already found some yard sales which I didn't see in cList or other sources.

yardsalesearch(dot)com/

That may be old news to you (the above link) but its new to me.

I'll explore the group idea later today...have to go to an auction pretty soon, so time to get off the computer (it's 7:30 here on the west coast).

Thanks again HGP.

You could do a group search and see what comes up.

OK, I'm starting to get it. Looks like you have to join a group to even see the things, or as you said start one of your own. I'll do some more exploring. Every venue helps; surprised the interface through FB isn't easier, but since it's worldwide I guess they have to organize it that way to narrow down the search.

Thanks HGP !

I belong to around 12 different FB Yard Sale Type Groups.
Most have rules about how many posts per day and how often you can bump your items.

I have set up 2 FB Page for my items.  One is Warehouse Treasures, One is Halloween Discount.  Soon to Open "Poppies' Attic" as well as a Christmas one.

Anyway - I post a few of the items w/ an advertisement to the page.  All of this advertises my Convenience store where SOME of the items are sitting.

I have had some success.  Good items don't seem to sell well.  BUT... I just found a nice Furniture site that sells higher dollar and looks like items are moving.  Going to put some of our Chalk Paint Furniture on there and see.

Do I understand correctly that I should be able to go into Facebook and type in Warehouse Trasures or Halloween Discount and either of your sale pages should pop up?  I tried that and couldn't get it to work.  I hardly use facebook, so if it takes something special to to it, please let us know. I am interested in the concept and I don't think it is happening in central California.

Also your chalk painted furniture sounds interesting. Can you direct us to that as well?  Thanks !

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: WASTE OF TIME - read before censored

I don't blame Travis for deleting such drama because if new people to the forum are reading this it looks very childish and petty. Not the kind of information I started using this forum for.
Just my two cents.

In all fairness, look at the original poster in a couple of the threads which have been controversial; it was Travis.

Had they not been started (and continued) much of what you are talking about would not have occured.

As to new members reading the bickering....many won't even see it. They look for the "treasure" here just as they do at the lockers....and at least here they will find some gems relating to the business and a high dose of reality regarding what the lockers are really like.

The fact that you have one online facility down the coast (midway between S.F. and L.A.) says a lot about the current state of online auctions. They MIGHT flourish in L.A. and maybe Dallas, but look at all the vast wasteland in between. Nope, they're a non-issue for the bulk of facilities that sell and the bulk of buyers as well, BUT that's just my opinion.  ;D

correct, frustrated, but honest.

censorship, personal threats, misleading his users - yes frustrated.

I will let the performance of the websites settle the "sword fight" and the acceptance of the industry.

Travis has it all figured out, his information is accurate and on point. I suggest placing your bets on VSA.

I will go back to my hole and continue to loose ground to Travis.

I'd be careful when stating something like the sentence in red above; some of the readers here won't catch the sarcasm and will take it at face value. No, really.  ;D

Honesty is great and I'm a big advocate of telling it like it is. Unfortunately, the dynamics of the marketplace and the personalities of the two people involved here make this a difficult situation.

Your an idiot.
Way come to a site and post crap like that?
May a thousand donkies kick you in the A$$.
No special cupcake for you.

Well, I'm pretty sure he's not an idiot, but it WAS a bad idea to make that post. I think he's frustrated by the fact that Travis deletes some content....of course it's content that doesn't promote Tavis' views and it's content that might promote Lance's content at HIS website.

It's a two-edged sword here that's for sure. When you come right down to it Travis does have the right to take out posts that denigrate this website, but on the other hand doing that says something about the publics' at large right to express ideas.  I've always been of the opinion that people should be allowed to select what they read and where they read it.

Almost three years ago I elected to go with this website...that was when Drew owned it and Travis was an upstart selling his listing service. At that time he plugged in right in the middle of text on any number of subjects until Drew told him (and all of us) that it was OK in the signature area, but nowhere else. That pretty much holds true now as well, though occasionally there are exceptions.

I am actually a member at Storage Treasures, but if I have posted there it has been less than a handful in years. I continue to "support" Storage Auction Forums for both reading and posting simply because I have a history here and have been PART of the history here as well. Despite differences with Travis and Alloro I will continue to both read and post here because as Travis has said (paraphrasing)....it is the best option at this time... for news and views about the business and its many aspects.

Take a look at this from Storage Treasures....one good idea and one bad idea !

The BAD:

Online auctions...both Travis and Lance know my feelings about these...in my opinion they won't fly.

I thought it was strange they said they would...."over analyze" the concept.

The Good:

An opportunity to win an I-Pad.  Beats the heck out of the $50 gift card idea, but I'm sure the odds are high...still ?

Sure, I offered to trade advertising with you. What, do you think that qualifies as an endorsement? But you failed to realize that I had a hidden agenda when I contacted you. You unknowingly revealed some information that was just priceless.

Say it isn't so !  :-\

eBay / Re: Is EBAY super slow lately or is it just me?
« on: October 29, 2013, 10:15:23 AM »
I have listed quite a few new things lately and it seems like no one is buying. Has anyone else noticed a slow down? Craigslist also.

I get that feeling too. Also cList has been deleting (pink delete) some of my listings lately. Sometimes I will just RENEW an item and it will go up OK but then an hour later it has been pink deleted. What's up with that?

eBay / Re: 100,000 free listings on eBay

Did you get permission from eBay to repost their copyrighted material here? ;)

They thought it was great that I was promoting their generous offer.

I am still waiting to see who could post 100,000 listings in the three day period they defined.

eBay / 100,000 free listings on eBay
« on: October 27, 2013, 07:16:45 PM »
Well, RFR may be selling over $220,000 a month on eBay but is he getting this kind of offer ?

Wait, I think I'd rather be doing his volume in sales !  ;D

This will of course depend on your population base as much as anything else.

In my immediate area I would say we have 2 to 10 a month with usual rate being about 4 or 5. That would be in just a 40 mile radius. Expanding that out it would go up quite a bit but be a bit of a drive.
