In my local pickup eBay listings I say in the payment section.

Payment is made upon pickup in a manner used thousands of years before PayPal was ever invented.
I also might say something like "payment is made in U.S. currency upon local pickup"

As I said in my original post, taking photos would require some finesse. Customer relations is important of course.

I doubt that idea will work for long and I haven't seen it in central California.

The crowds...that's another story...3 months, 6 months ?

Reality Shows about Storage Auctions / Auction Hunters Vs. Storage Wars !
« on: January 30, 2011, 10:40:04 AM »
We've all read multiple posts about these two shows and their affect on our business, but here's a topic to post anything ELSE you think about those shows (OK, you can vent on the affect too !).

To start it off, here's what I know about their future.
Auction Hunters started with 8 episodes and has signed for 20 more with no date on the new season starting.
Storage Wars still running (as of Jan, 2011) new episodes, so they may have started with a traditional 13 epidodes and already running on another 13 new ones or so.

One possible topic here is your feelings on which show is more "real" (if that's possible).

And for the producers, how about a match between the two shows main characters...the two guys take on the four guys !

Welcome to the Online Storage Auctions Forum / Re: Hi from the Chi

I think it will die down a little bit as the tv show hits it off season but they have signed a second season so I think it may take a little while to level back out to what the new storage auction scene is going to be like!

I read that Auction Hunters signed up for another 20 episdodes after the first 8 (I think it was).
Haven't heard the stats on Storage Wars, but they still seem to have new episodes running once a week.

Flea Markets / Flea Market Revenue ?
« on: January 30, 2011, 10:22:02 AM »
Been selling at fleas for 7 years now. My town has 4 and 3 I have sold at.

One is the best of the three and has a higher income buyer base. Other two are better for getting rid of lower end items if you have the ability to have different loads for different crowds.

My question here is not how much (in dollars) you actually sell (or net) at fleas, but what the trend has been for you the last few years if you are an old-timer.

I found that in 2010 my sales were down about $200 a month over 2009, but my record-keeping mixes both flea and ebay, craig sales, so it's not totally categorized.

Of course, so much depends on WHAT you have to sell at any given time too.  Any thoughts ?

The Lounge / Re: Take me! works perfectly
« on: January 30, 2011, 10:16:32 AM »
Works for me too, but since  I live on a cul-de-sac it's a bit of a problem sometimes. Could take it down to the main intersection, but that wouldn't go over with the homeowner who became my selling ground !

I have an alley behind my house as the garage is detached and it the rear. That is where garbage pickup happens too and we have scavengers who go through for cans, etc. A bigger piece with a "free" sign on it seems to work here. I think one of my poorer neighbors has a housefull of odds and end furn pieces I put out !

The Treasure Chest / Re: Coins..Coins..Coins.....
« on: January 30, 2011, 10:12:37 AM »
Coins...here are the two I remember....others made money too, but not as memorable.

One 1816 50 cent piece with strangely worn outer edge...still went for $25. I kept it for awhile considering its history as being minted just 4 years after the war of 1812.

The other good coin was a silver dollar minted in Carson City, NV. Forget the year, but not the $72 I got for it.

That sometimes happens and hopefully it won't happen right off the bat for all the newbies. Coming down from a great buy isn't as much fun as working your way up to a good one after a few bad and medium-good ones. They're not all winners for sure.

I have fond memories of the good ones and can almost tell you when I got them (from within 7 years ago) and can certainly tell you the highlight items from each of the good ones.

The Treasure Chest / Re: A dissapointing treasure
« on: January 30, 2011, 10:06:45 AM »
Oh man, talk about a let down!

The most cash I've ever found would be in the $40 to $50 range, often in jars of pennies, dimes, qtrs, etc and of course some bills now and again.

Collectible coins another story with my best being two coins in 2 different lockers. One 1816 50 cent piece with strangely worn outer edge...still went for $25. I kept it for awhile considering its history as being minted just 4 years after the war of 1812.

The other good coin was a silver dollar minted in Carson City, NV. Forget the year, but not the $72 I got for it.

Other Forms of Selling / Re: Aquarium stuff
« on: January 30, 2011, 10:02:52 AM »
Thanks for THAT tip.

Aquariums are of course problematic because of the glass.

I like selling the big ones right from the auction lkr which I would have rented cheaply for the first month.
If it doesn't go during that first month, then it's moving the darn thing (talking about 200 to 300 gallon tanks).

If you have anything that is obviously of value but you are having trouble selling online, take it to a pawn shop and ask for $100... they might offer you $20 bucks or something...take it and be glad you sold the item.

That's a great idea and it works for me at places like Play It Again Sports (national ?) and Music Go Round. It gives me some bucks I wouldn't get and sometimes the test of a piece of electronic equipement (amps, etc) that I might not be able to get from a friend who is out of town at the time.

Other Forms of Selling / Re: Most Profitable Sale EVER!
« on: January 30, 2011, 09:58:52 AM »
That's definitely a novel idea and probably a few people have thought of it, but NOW it will be like the TV shows and spread like wildfire...still a good idea though !

4063
Frankly I haven't had that experience and hope I never do, but you could do this.

Photograph the exchange of cash taking place for the item at pickup time. You could even photograph the license plate of the person picking it up. Naturally some tact would be necessary in this taking place. You don't want to alienate this person in the process.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: PODS Vs Regular Storage
« on: January 30, 2011, 09:54:23 AM »
I've bought 2 PODS including one that included the year 2000 Honda Quad I got! It was clearly visible at the door end of the locker.

The thing that gets me is that when some of the pods are opened, they are not all that full and some of them show a tv or other items that have tumbled down from being stacked high in an almost empty locker. I guess the people who packed it didn't have a sense of how the actual POD is moved. I have some pictures of this process and I'll come back here later and post them.
