eBay / Re: MUST READ!!! Be Careful How You Respond To Ebay Messages
« on: October 11, 2013, 08:06:58 PM »
Well, I have to disagree at least for the experience I've had.

Just today when receiving an email notification from eBay (which contains the content of the email sent through eBay) I pushed the RESPOND button within that email and it sent my response to the original sender.

He then responded to that email and I responded again. This is all in my regular mail carrier in the notification emails from eBay.

After just reading your note here on the forum I went into eBay and ALL those back and forths were in my eBay message area for my account.

****

Also in the past when talking to live eBay operators about open cases I have asked them to check all my eBay messages and they have seen everyone of them both to me and from me to the other party. Many times I just used the RESPOND button in the notification email.

Works for me. Have to see what others have to say.

******

Edit: after re-reading your original post and seeing something about you must log-in to eBay it occurred to me that I am always logged in to eBay anyway. That might make a difference. The only way to test it would be to NOT be logged in and make a point of using the RESPOND button in the notification email and then go into eBay and see if it was in fact recorded.

I seldom log out of eBay...never had any reason to worry about it. My computer seems to be pretty well protected with firewalls, anti-virus, etc.

Perhaps it's not too late.

I think it's too late. He said they were "testing" what they had developed. They just don't publish it on the internet with practice auctions "by admin".

:'(.
So I guess I suckered myself this time.
This is happening to collectables every day.
Like Howdy Doody. The folks still around that remember him are past their collecting days and soon very few will remember him at all - worse yet, with the speed of change of technology - a lot of "youth" really don't even understand.

Well, you didn't say how much you paid for them, so hopefully it wasn't too expensive a lesson.

As to old collectibles (like Howdy Doody) one has to be careful all right.  Another example is old yearbooks. Sure a college yearbook from 1923 looks great at an estate sale, but a 20 year old grad from that year would be 110 years old today !  Sure, maybe he/she had a child when they were 25 and maybe that child would be interested in it, but THAT person would be OLD too !

Time does us all in, and I doubt the grand-children or great-grand-children would be interested in a book where you have to turn the pages.

Online Storage Auctions / Re: Online Auctions In Dallas Zipcode
« on: October 10, 2013, 10:26:05 AM »
I expanded my search on the Dallas zipcode to 500 miles:

Cities that had auctions in that range included:

Midland, TX
Fort Worth
Dallas
Houston

Gulfport, LA
Jackson, MS
Memphis, TN

That was a total of SEVEN, count 'em SEVEN cities in a 500 miles radius of Dallas, TX.

TOTAL NUMBER OF ONLINE AUCTIONS in that parameter:

A WHOPPING 55 auctions.

*****

Sorry, but I think the "next big thing in storage auctions" (any online storage auction service)has a LONG WAY to go and will be fighting a decline in the interest in storage auctions in general.  Time to hook the wagon to a different shooting star. But maybe I'm not seeing the big picture.  ;D

Online Storage Auctions / Online Auctions In Dallas Zipcode
« on: October 10, 2013, 10:12:29 AM »
OK, I give up. I thought there would be a huge presence of online auctions in Dallas, TX with all the hoopla about how great online auctions are. The results I got were overwhelmingly unimpressive. Granted, this is for one day in one month of a 365 day, 12 month year and this is not a scientific investigation. It's just what Joe Sixpack would find if he did this search on this day in this month of this year. Your results may be different, later today, tomorrow, etc.

Here are the results at 8 a.m. Pacific Standard Time, 10/10/2013:

Search on Storage Battles for zipcode in Dallas, 75001 (doesn't seem to matter as I tried several zipcodes).

With a 25 mile radius:

Three towns listed ... Arlington, Allen, Wylie.  Total of 6 auctions.

With a 100 mile radius (includes Ft. Worth):

Same Results!

****

Am I missing something? Did I do an insufficient search?

Given the parameters I set up in the first paragraph here (one day, not every day of a 365 day year)I REALLY don't see the big deal about online auctions now. They look like a non-player even on Storage Battles.   What's the big interest ?

Online Storage Auctions / Online Auctions "near" my zipcode
« on: October 10, 2013, 09:55:30 AM »
After seeing two listings on Travis' site I decided to look at Storage Battles for the first time in maybe 6 months (right after Travis started his site).

I entered my zipcode and asked for listings within 50 miles. The result was about 15 auctions. At a minimum some of them were 35 miles away.

I then expanded the radius gradually and it got better, but here are the results for expanding the radius to 500 miles (the max allowed by Sb).

There were 108 auctions within 500 miles of my zipcode. This took in the Los Angeles area (400 miles south of me) and even grabbed one in Las Vegas and a couple in Utah.

So, I was surprised how few of them there actually were. Even in my local area the live auctions by auctioneers hit 100 a month (within 75 miles) and this area is far less populated than Los Angles.

I guess a lot of LA facilities are conducting live auctions instead of oline auctions. If I lived in Los Angeles I guess it would be worth a shot to look at online auctions, but otherwise no considering I am one of those people who would like to see a locker in person.

I'll do a search on SB in Dallas and see what comes up so I can experience what the Dallas audience sees as opportunities.

eBay / Re: China set

Thoughts.

Several years ago I got a great locker that had both a daughter (age 50 or so) and her deceased mother's belongings inside. The younger one had died as well and the locker went up for auction. No one to bail it out I guess.

Anyway, there were two complete sets of Japanese china in there...can't remember the names, but what I do remember was looking them up on whatever the replacements site is (maybe that's it replacements.com) to get an idea. They deal in selling pieces and of course they have hundreds of patterns.

I tried selling whole sets. Didn't work. What I eventually found out was that pieces like soup toureens (sp?), serving dishes, cream/sugar sets, etc are what sell on eBay. Made sense to me as those pieces are single sorts of things and likely to get broken on the way from the Thanksgiving table to the floor.  Those sold. Others weren't worth the listing.

All depends on brand as well of course. Hope this helps.

Suggestion Center / Re: Terms of Service (TOS) for this website

Feel free, you don't need me or anyone else to do that. Unless you're not on speaking terms for some reason?

I thought, as global moderator, you might want to suggest it, but since he drops in on a fairly regular basis I'm sure he'll read the threads of the last few days....once he gets his locker buys listed.

As to "....not on speaking terms for some reason?"...as long as I provide a controversy once a month he's happy. It's like the news on tv, if it was all hearts and flowers the ratings would go down !  ;D

Other Forms of Selling / Re: Selling at auction houses
« on: October 09, 2013, 09:36:29 AM »
Has anyone else noticed the lack of buyers at auction houses lately?

I haven't been to an auction house in years but am thinking of starting up again. Meanwhile, there are two locations 50 miles apart and though they were both started by the same company 6 months ago, one is already shut down and the other has cut back their schedule. Guess that says something.

While we're waiting here's my first suggestion.

How about asking Travis to create a locked section entitled TERMS OF SERVICE (or something like that) and putting the TOS into it.  That way anyone who was interested could find it by looking at the main menu.

Assuming you've done a cut and paste without any modifications to the context, then yes the Registration Agreement you posted is the TOS if only by another name. The Registration Agreement/TOS spells out the terms which have to be agreed to in order to obtain membership to this site.

Yes, the cut and paste was done without any modifications being made to it. To do otherwise would have been pointless.

I will post my observations and questions either later today or sometime tomorrow as life does extend beyond these bounds.

Flea Markets / Re: Haitian people ar flea markets, suck
« on: October 08, 2013, 04:01:08 PM »
Why, what's your point?

What's my point?   Understanding, is my point.

Most people who sign up for forums (or other online types of things) simply push the accept button and
don't even read what they are agreeing to.

By providing it somewhere other than the initial contact people can have a greater understanding of the TOS.

In the thread I started where I did the cut and paste of the TOS I will post some observations and questions about it.

I assume it is all right to pose questions to have a greater understanding?  If not, please let me know in this thread as a response to this post.

I'm just trying to keep things civil and fair to all.

Just an FYI, your "guard dog" remark is technically name calling and a personal attack. This is a violation of the TOS for this site and if I were to follow your path of trying to impose my way of thinking on others I would be required to delete your post.  ::)

I have started a thread inquiring about the TOS. It is located at the link below.

Suggestion Center / Terms of Service (TOS) for this website
« on: October 08, 2013, 01:29:03 PM »
TOS have been brought up several times in posts here on the forum. Alloro brought them up once today (10/8/2013) and I forget who brought them up before.

Curious as to what the TOS actually says, I looked for it. The only thing I could find was the "registration agreement" one acknowleges when signing up for the forum.  I have provided a cut and paste for it below.

My questions at this point are:
Is what I have included here the true TOS?
If there is a TOS other than what I have provided here, where is it so we can read it?

More observations later after these questions have been answered.
