Storage Facilities / Re: Reasons people lose their storage unit
« on: July 17, 2013, 01:38:37 PM »
I think it runs the gammit, people die and family don't know htey have the unit, divorce and gets forgotten about, I've bought anumber of units where the person obviously went to jail. Military deployment is another one, I'll sell the stuff back for not much more than cost if they are interested and that's the case as I feel bad for them and had a similar thing happen to a friend of mine, gf was supposed to pay his bills kept his money he lost everything he had when the unit was auctioned, guns, laptops, furniture, family pictures, etc. Also I think alot of people accumulate a bill and reaslize they have crap in the unit, its not going to be reported on their credit and just let it default figure they'd rather lose some old clothes than pay the $90 or whatever the past few months of their storage bil has come to

eBay / Anyone noticed your ebay final value fee percentages go down?
« on: July 17, 2013, 01:16:19 PM »
Not sure if it's just my product category or across the board but for people who have an ebay store any store level fees went from 7% to 6%. May not sound like much but overa the long run it really adds up if your doing voluje

eBay / Re: Appropriate amount of time
« on: July 12, 2013, 11:18:22 AM »
Seems odd that the shipper could have printed the label and not taken the package to the post office for a while. I believe the post office requires the package to be received the same date as printed on the label.

Not really. I don't make a practice of doing it but have done it on an occasion or two when I oversell on ebay and one of my delivereies from my supplier gets delayed at customer or something like that. Ebay is super strict with power sellers and top rated sellers printing lables within 24 hours. If you dont your powerseller/top rated seller status will be pulled pretty quickly. For that reason on one or two occasional I've printed labels and not mailed for another day.

Post office really doesn't care. I've had one mail carrier tell me I had to reprint but otherwise they never have an issue with it. Probably only with priority or express since those are guranteed within a certain amount of time. With first class they dont care at all.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Tracking Your Profits
« on: July 12, 2013, 11:12:53 AM »
I kind of keep a vague running tally in my head. Overall I know what I paid for a unit and what I make off a unit in terms of the bigger dollar items, in terms of the small stuff and clothes and such not so much. Then you buy another locker, merhc starts getting mixed you start getting buyers buying from diff lockers and it all becomes a blur. I genrally try to keep a running tally in my head but just way to much work with the nickel and diming type items trying to track it all.

eBay / Re: Inflating Bids
« on: July 10, 2013, 05:15:12 PM »
Why do you accept bids from buyers with zero feedback?

because you have to. ebay does have buyer requirements but you cant not let 0 feedack people buy. otherwise nobody would take them and new peopel woudl never get started on ebay. you can set it so people with unpaid item strikes or neg feedback cant bid but you cnat stop 0 feedback people

coudl be one of two things. one possibility is the seller is lazy and printed the package as to meet ebay 24 hour deadline with printing the lable but hasn't bothered going t the post office to drop it off or hasnt even packed it. its also possible it just isn't showing tracking.

usps recently change dthe name of delivery confirmatin to tracking which is stupid because its not tracking its delivery confirmation. they are only required to scan upon delivery not all along the way like true tracking. sometimes packages may show tracking at diff sort facilities but those are courtesy scans sometimes you wont see anything until you have the package in hand.

as a seller its best to drop the package off nad have it scanned otherwise i answer this question like 10 times a day for buyers why isnt my package showing shipping however when i got a handful of 30-50 packages if there's a ilne i just drop them and leave and they generally dont get scanned in that way so i get people asking why isnt tracking showing anything

eBay / Re: Got an invitation from eBay
« on: July 10, 2013, 05:10:27 PM »
ebay has gone to **** with everyone selling the same drop shipped crap. this is sure to make it worse if everyone is buying from ebay as a supplier. i doubt ebay would have any good deals though for wholesale

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Gamble on the safe or be safe?
« on: June 27, 2013, 10:41:40 AM »
safes are always interesting however im never willing to bid much on them. the one i bought i tried to get the combo from the company who made it but had no luck wound up having to bust into it which essentiallyruined any value the safe had aside from scrap value. it wasn't willing to pay a locksmith a few hundred bucks to open it properly or drill it out. in my experience most safes i have bought or seen opened tend to be empty. im sure there's some great scores but ive also seen so many people come out losers after buying safes. in my area there's always a several people who seem to think decent size safe that makes the unit worth at least a grand. when figuing a bid i dont take the safe into account as muhc more than scrap value and generally assume they are empty

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Taking Merchandise To Mexico
« on: June 27, 2013, 10:38:42 AM »
kind of off topic here but alot of people make good money bringing old ford rangers into mexico apparently they are really popular and sell for a decent buck there. in jamaica the car to make money off transporting is toyota pickups like older 80s ones. yeah there's all types of outside the box ways to make money in this industry. as far as the mexico thing i think someone would have to have family there and kind of have some connections to make something like that work.

well you made it alot further than most newbies. buying units and reselling isn't a cake walk its alot of work not only going to the auctions, sorting merch, selling, sitting at flea markets and garage sales, ebay, etc and oftentimes for small profits. reason i liked the whole storage unit industry is alot of it i dont see as work. i know alot of regulars, alot of the day is sitting around shooting the **** and hanging out withh regulars i know. that said its also a ton of work and takes a tole on family and social time, etc. I'm still interestedin auctions and still attend as I can but like you came across an opportunity to make more money alot more easily and focusing my efforts there. auctions are more a hobby for me now days.

eBay / Re: Inflating Bids
« on: June 27, 2013, 10:12:26 AM »
Up until recently I only did buy it now auctions where people had to pay immediately upon buying via paypal. Recently I started doing auction and had some idiot bidding on like 15 of my auctions running the prices up and not paying. I caught it pretty early contacted ebay they could really care less the lady was like you can open an unpaid item thing. I was like thanks that does nothing and I missed out on all these sales since second chance offers aren't that afffective. The one piece of advice she did have that I took was setting up your buyer preferences. Don't let people bid if htey have had unpaid item strikes in teh past month, if they have negative feedback in the last month, etc, etc, etc. This really helps. You can also set limits so new customers can't make more than say 5 purchases in a 10 day period.

Hey good luck with the business. Really shop around for a retail space. Commercial space is really more demand than supply so you can find some really good deals with no long term contracts or leases, sometimes even a few months free.

If you do a lot of networking with other storage buyers maybe offer them the opportunity to rent some space in your store, your wife is already sitting around by the till anyway, why not sell stuff for them as well. I have an antique store near me where its like this not one owner but several owners who have stuff in their and basically operate independantly but share a space. You could also selll on consignment for tohers you know.

I always thought you may as well have a we sell on ebay store at a place like this as well. It would help to get you more merchandise from other people, boost your ebay volume and feedback and also like I said with the other thing, you already have someone who's going to be sitting around waiting for customers why not have them take in ebay things on consignment as well.

Best of luck to you

Stores / Re: Home Interior Consignment Stores
« on: June 04, 2013, 12:39:48 PM »
There's a higher end consignment store near me I used to use alot. As far as margins if you wanted cash on the spot they gave you nearly nothing on consignment they actually paid out pretty fair I think 70% of whatever it sold for which isnt too bad.

They actually were doing really well, started in one store in a strip mall and as the business grew bought one unit next to them and later a third. They did houseware and a little bit of womens clothes, jewelry, and high end purses.
