General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Quick way to test for gold
« on: October 03, 2011, 11:50:55 PM »
My wife doesn't go anywhere with out Hers . and it HAS paid off .
Last Fri. at an Estate sale , She bought some items that the dealer insisted    were Sterling Silver, as they were marked sterling .                                                            She tested them out in the car and brought several  of them right back , and  showed the dealer , and She  refunded Her for those items .                     nationaljewelerssupplies.com/gold-testers/ETTES808.html
She made up Her own kit , like this one, but with less acid  and a better stone .

Or until You make Your first  $ 10,000 buying Gold .

Pps.
The 15 G of 14 K on Fee Bay for $ 49 from China won't be real gold  , and We are all ready finding this crap showing up in lockers , auctions , and at yard sales .

62
The three 10 X 30 foot lockers were good for 6 runs with all the bags of crap clothes , TV Consoles ,        Fall Apart Furniture , sofas , mattress and box springs .                                                   I use to rent a shop in a contractors yard that had two dumpster rental companies park and store there , the day they moved in , the owner walked over and said ,       "  any time there is a dumpster with stuff in it , feel free to add to it , just don't dump in an empty one , it gets real embarrassing when it gets delivered "                             They use to drop 1/2 loads and make up a full dumpster with a loader .
Since We moved , it cost us a minimum of $ 90. plus Mattress and box springs $ 50. extra for each one .
We are very selective in our bids now .
We do have a cheaper place , put it is a drive , and only worth it if I use our 18 ft cam superline car trailer and really load it up .

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Exercise Machines and there metal
« on: September 27, 2011, 12:43:02 AM »
The last one I had , after 6 mo.  , I gave it to a guy in the shop next to mine , and it was heavy .
On the local freecycle there is one now that cost around $1000. and was only used a couple of times , asked the wife and daughter  if they wanted to go for it , I won't post there answer , LOL    just too damn awkward and heavy too move , even for free .
We were at an auction a couple of years ago with a weight bench and an all around  machine ? in it and auctioner tried to get $ 5.00 for it with offering up the dumpster for the rest of the crap , but still no takers .  It looked like this

Putting My recycling /trash out at 5:00 Am wouldn't work for Me , as some jerk on a bike hits it around 5:30 / 6:00 Am pulling it apart looking for .05 cent cans and bottles .                                                                                                                  (  I never put any out as I buy mine in Nh. ( no deposit ) ( No Sales Tax ) ( Plus cheap State Run Liquor Stores  ;D )   when We are attending locker sales there and cash them in here in Ma. @ $.05 ea.  ;D )
Plus our trash bags are $1.75 ea , and very thin/see through so the " Recycling Committee " can drive around and make sure you don't have any recycling in your trash that they can refuse to pick up . ( I put mine into the heavy black bags from Home Chepo ) first  LOL  >:(

Scrap yards  Average $ 25+ to dump one here in mass.  $35 +  for large or console tv's
My town will pick them with a pre pay once a month
     The Commonwealth of Massachusetts DEP
regulations prohibit the disposal of computer
monitors and televisions in the rubbish, due to the
lead content in the cathode ray tubes.
The Town of Natick will collect and recycle
these items. Computers and televisions are
$25.00 each and are collected as bulky waste.
Please call the Sanitation Division for information.
These items will not be accepted at the Recycling
Center.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: I'm quickly learning to hate pianos

A $150 or $200 is Not Very Cheap for a bunch of boxes if You have to break up a piano and Fall A Particle Board  furniture plus dispose of it .
Plus tools are not bring this year what they brought for $$$$ two years ago , at least not in New England .Bandit

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: I am beginning to think...
« on: September 19, 2011, 09:52:07 PM »
I asked the Boss , and She agrees that the quality and quantity of the lockers  have either stayed the same , or more likely , gone down .
Plus a lot of lockers lately show signs of the boxes being gone " Frantically " gone through   ;D
Also I agree with Movieman  on the larger crowds and insane prices that units loaded with junk are going for .
Lately We have just been going if close by and/or we are in the area , and more for the entertainment .
( We didn't even attend the auction  held at the facility  where We have our two 30 ft lockers ,              We put away the returns from the Brimfield Flea Market and finished making up the  mining rough bags    that we needed for a Fair with our portable gemstone mining sluice   and left an hour before it started )

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: How far are you willing to drive to auctions?
« on: September 19, 2011, 09:09:39 PM »
We will often go to an auction up in Maine or New Hampshire but make a mini adventure out of it  , lobster or clams for lunch or dinner  and find a  small country auction to attend in the evening .
Otherwise We have plenty to choose from within 30 to 50 miles from home .

I wonder how he made out with all the office furniture ? He hasn't been back since Aug. 2 .
I know from personal experience how office furniture sells here in Mass. with so many companies going OOB , downsizing or moving out of the  state / country .                                                                                      You almost have to offer to pay someone to take it plus offer free delivery .

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: At what point do you throw it away???
« on: September 13, 2011, 07:42:07 AM »
We usually break down and toss in the trailer any " Fall Apart Board " Furniture ,          ( and there has been a lot of that junk around lately ) plus anything else that looks really nasty for a dump run .
Higher value items will go to our storage locker till it sells on Craigs ( ex. Lincoln tombstone welder going on Craigs for $ 125 today ) or into a friends monthly auction.    A lot depends on what We think We can get for it , the rest does One Yard Sale and takes Two Trips to the Flea Market before being Donated or just Tossed .
It cost too much to store when You have to rent a locker or two .
We have a 10 W X 10 H  X 30 L locker w/lights and elec. for $ 165 a month and grab a second one when we need it .
