General Storage Auction Talk / AAA Discounts
« on: January 07, 2013, 04:52:15 PM »
Few months back I got a AAA membership because I had that 6weeks of traveling all over.  The $125 membership not only paid for itself but saved me a ton on Plane, Trains, Auto (and Ins & upgrades), hotels (and upgrades) and Town Car Services.    Also dropped my roadside thru insurance so saved $72/yr there.

Anyway.....went to U-haul today to inquire about a tow hitch and I'll get 10% off.
They don't give discounts on trucks but he said Budget & Penske does and if I get a qoute from them, u-haul will match it.    Or Rent a pick-up truck thru a car agency with AAA discount.  Higher daily rate but no mileage.  Have to do the math on that one.....

UPS also has AAA discounts on shipping and supplies.

Extra Space Storage gives 15% off years lease; 12% off month-to-month.

eBay / Re: Ebay Shipping is killing me
« on: January 07, 2013, 01:49:06 PM »
I prefer UPS, cause the shipping charges are not on the label and the buyer is none the wiser shipping was less then they paid.

USPS hides the hipping cost also.......

Yeah. New would be spendy.

With all the shipping here used trucks are pretty cheap.  Never looked into 26' but he average u-haul style....16 foot?....can be had for $3000-$4000 if you don't mind them beat up.

Lots of older ones for under $2000.

Always see them at auctions.  Mid-2000's go for under $10k

I do 3M clear bra application on cars.

Have tons of scrape if you want some.  Stuff takes a beating!!
Same stuff thy charge $50-$75 at the mall for.

Also, just got a new case from brookstone.  When you close it auto turn off and tuns back on when you open it.  Pretty cool. Best case I've had so far.  Durable.  Ipad just pop out if you need to.  Camera hole actually line up and doesn't give a halo......

When buying full time, I moved with two 26' U-Hauls every week. I would have used an 18 wheeler if I thought I could maneuver it through the storage facility.

You rented or do you mean you owned u-haul style of trucks?

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Clothes with Security tags
« on: January 07, 2013, 01:15:53 PM »

I got arrested 20 years ago when i sold property from a unit that was unknown to me to be stolen property.

Would be interested in he details/facts of this.

Maybe new topic of wht happened?   How did you get caught?  What were the items?  You get off?  If so, how?  You able to keep any of the contents?

I find it funny that if I buy a unit of stolen good I'm in possession of stolen goods even tho I paid or them in good faith.  I sell, that's trafficking stolen goods....another crime.

BUT!  Police take those goods, don't return them to owner but SELL them.  Legally.  THEY can sell stolen goods but I can't?   I bought in good faith so after investigation I hold get them back if not rightl owner!

And if I sell stolen goods, the person buying is now in possession of stole goods.
Police sell stolen goods......suddenly they aren't stolen goods anymore!  WTF?!

GameStop has iPad2 16GGB for $350.  (No 3G, just WiFi)

If you have a membership they are offering 20% extra buy back bonus.  So trade in some old consoles and games, iPhones, iPods.......

Think my iPad2 has been the best purchase I've ever made.   Even the CL app is decent now.  Still some dislikes but nothing major.
It has helped me make money, really has saved me money and saved me from making some bad purchases.

With the Bluetooth keyboard and SD card reader I rarely even use my laptop anymore.

The iPhone was handy, the ipad is useful.......

I have gotten away so far with a 4-dr sedan.  Last one had tow hitch, this one does not and its been problematic.    I'm limited on size of units I can bid on.

I have access to occasional use of both a pick-up and a box van but can't depend on getting them with just 24hrs notice.

What my vehicles size does is limit my buying power or I must add into price of bid the cost of renting the unit for a month or renting a truck.

With the sedan with tow package I had to add in cost of gas to make several trips instead of just one, had I had a truck.

I wouldnt recommend my system.   I'm currently on the look out for,at minimum, a small truck and preferably with a tow package.....

Buyer FAQs / Re: How long do I have to clean out a locker?
« on: January 06, 2013, 04:05:32 PM »
If you think you might have trouble emptying it in 24hrs.....ask, before you bid, on time limits.

Most places I've been to have no problem giving 48hrs.

You can also ask to rent it for a month.  Really depends on how many units they already have available and if its already been assigned a new owner.

I've even asked if I could I could rent it for a week.  They made me pay a month upfront but refunded unused portion.

Though I did stop in the office everyday, brought doughnuts, flirted with the....um......weight challenged manager.

Managers are for the most part very giving to those that are friendly and respectful.
Don't take their (or employee's) attitude on auction day as their normal personality.

I simply keep 5-6 locks in my trunk.  I pick them up at garage and estate sales for $0.50-$1.

I carry in two.  One cylinder style which i prefer and two smaller 'normal' style.

One, some of the facilities the cylinder style doesn't fit.

Two, a good 10% of the auctions a newbie doesn't bring a lock and I'll sell them one.
Even if they don't buy.  As soon as I overhear the whispered "we are suppose to bring a lock?"  I step up.
Pays he days gas at least.....

I personally like the cylinder locks.  They are harder to break but mainly because the key hole is on front and easier IMO.

I also have a red tag, strip of cloth with a brass ring in it, that I hang on my lock.
I've spent way to many times forgetting where my locker is so the "flag" marks it.

And yes, I'm an idiot sometimes.

I wish these sites would find out the liabilities against the assets.

Years ago Vanillia Ice was interviewed and said a nice qoute.   Reporter said something about his home in Beverly Hills and his Farrari.   He said he didn't own either.  He LIVES in a house in Beverly and he DRIVES a Farrari but the bank owns them.

He had a "net worth" of something lke $20 million.   But against he debts he owed: taxes, morgage...
He was bankrupt.   He owed more than the assets were worth.

Dude.   Step away from the laptop.   See that glow on the wall?   Pull the fabric away.   That's a window.
Look out there....that's outside.  Go to it!   Sunlight.  Fresh air.  PEOPLE!

You need to get out more.
