New to Storage Auctions? / Re: For the newbies
« on: January 28, 2012, 12:14:24 PM »
Good points I think the best advice for newbies is its nothign like the tv show, the wow factor items or big ticket items are few and far between its much more of a grind getting rid of small household items and small dollar items with the occasional flat screen tv, motorcycle or nice piece of electronics or collectibles. Dont think you buy an item go to an expert and unload it for 3x what you paid for the locker. Expect to spend hours sorting through nasty crap, running around town to resale shops, listing itemss on craigslist meeting up with people to sell a $10 item, putting up ebay listings, taking pics, wasting weekends at flea markets. Money can be made and its a fun hustle and hobby but it is hard work.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: I'm also questioning this Business.
« on: January 28, 2012, 12:11:45 PM »
I did this business without a truck or even an SUV for years. It sucks, requires more planning and more time but can be done. Other downside is you tend to shy away from lockers with furniture, mattresses, etc. If you get cool with the facility managers they will often let you use their trucks for free if you fill up the gas. UHaul takes forever to check out a truck and is expensive but many home depot stores let you rent trucks for a few hours for like $24 no mileage fees. As far as this business goes dont think you can buy a unit and just sit back and list on ebay. Many items dont sell on ebay, are too heavy to justify shipping costs, etc. Its really a hustle lots of flea markets lots of meeting up with people on craigslist, have to go to lots of auctions. That said money can be made. I've been lazy lately been busy with work and other things and have another hustle thats much easier and making me much more than storage auctions ever did so currently storage auctions are more of a side hustle to make a few bucks and find items for myself that i personally need

The Lounge / Re: SOPA. Do your part.
« on: January 28, 2012, 12:05:10 PM »
I don't fully understand SOPA and PIPA but there are already copyright laws on the books, if your not going to enforce the current ones why create more?

Also, I like as little regulation as possible on the internet but I've heard some say they like the spirit of the law b/c I guess currently it's pretty tough to go after people outside the country, despite the justice dept I believe somehow already being able to shut down pirate bay, ninja video, etc but this law basically makes everyone responsible for policing everyone else. If someone posts a link to a site with copyrighted stuff on your blog, youtube vid, etc technically people can go after you. Basically the gov can go after people who have nothing to do with pirated material. There's some good youtube vids that kinda break down what these laws are. Funny thing is the guy sponsoring the law claims he doesn't even use the internet. Great someone who doesn't even use the internet is writing laws governing it.

eBay / Re: What have I been waiting for?!?!
« on: January 28, 2012, 12:00:19 PM »
Ebay can be profitable despite the fee's.  I've had several items that I couldn't sell at the flea or CL.  Put them on ebay and they sale.  May or may not be but $5 profit but is more then I had.  I use mostly priority flat rate boxes and online postage.  So just drop off the packages on my way home since I pass 3 post offices.

Yeah people complain about the fees me included but there's no denying ebay has a huge audience, at the flea market maybe you have a few hundred people seeing your item, on ebay you potentially have a few thousand.

I agree with the poster who said taking pics is a pain, gotta take the pics, upload on phootbucket as to not pay extra for pics and then put the html in, doesnt seem like that much work but when your trying to list tons of items it gets to be a pain.

when im smoking at an auction I'll normally step away from the crowd i would never smoke in a crowd of 50 people all shoulder to shoulder waiting to look at a unit however its probably just as possible you bumped into him. as for pets never seen a pet at an auction lol

Garage Sales / Re: Throw it all in boxes, and let them dig for it
« on: December 29, 2011, 06:39:56 PM »
i think people do kinda like to dig. i pretty much let people dig manily because im lazy though. i get all mexicans paying me 0.50 cents in pennies for items so its not worth my time to set up things nicely. i throw totes out and people can dig im not spending any more time on garage sales than necessary

Garage Sales / Re: Two sales a year ordinance
« on: December 29, 2011, 06:27:49 PM »
I would say this is pretty typical the only 6 months apart rules is kinda gay though in northern areas that would mean one of your sales was in colder weather.

my city has the 2 a year rule however there is absolutely no permiting process like many cities so there's really no record of you having a sale.

as for where to advertise i stopped springing for newspaper ads. i do craigslist as well as all the free yardsale listing type sites that are out there.

jerk neighbors are always a pain. a few suggestions have a garage sale at a friends house yeah its a pain moving your stuff over there but so what. other option like lots of people on here rent or find a private lot you can use and setup a sale in an old used car lot, abandoned lot, etc.

i dont see any reason why people wouldn't assuming the weather is comfortable. here in the north were stuck with the handful of ghetto indoor flea markets we have in my area

yeah i live in il the land of dickhead durbin, dickhead daley, etc. we have the worst gun laws in teh country. i think wi recently passed though stricter than most a ccw permit or something like that. now IL I believe is the only 1 of the 50 states that has no ccw. i have a few buddies and family members who have them but its special circumstance permits they run lg amounts of money for their business or church.

across the street from a pawn shop probably isn't a bad strategy. pawn shops are pretty picky about what they buy so if they aren't interested in it at the pawn shop and someone is hard up for money they probably come over to you. same scenario with people looking to buy if they dont find it at the pawn shop maybe tehy'll stop by and visit the thrift shop.

i often think people are stupid when they are new to aucitons and lay out a lot of money on opening a store, buying a nice truck, etc. i suppose you have to keep in mind though that just because someone is new to auctions does not mean they are new to resale, antiques, retail, etc.

Storage Auctions "In The News" / Re: look at all the texas trash.
« on: December 29, 2011, 06:00:19 PM »
And I saw this and thought WTF, I felt offended by your title, then I read what you said. Now I have to agree, they did pick wrongly. I am so tired ot the stereotypical crap about texas.

We do not get around on horses, we do not cook outside (unless we are BBQing), yes I have a toilet and take a  shower inside, no I do not own a cow, pig, horse, donkey, etc. We have one of the biggest Cities in the USA, so yes we have actual cities, and not towns and villages. And no we dont all talk with some Texas Southern Belle Accent.

ross are you married to your cousin? lol just kidding. agreed they did pick a group of annoying idiots. the new york guy isnt any better what an assclown.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: iPad for research at remote locations
« on: December 29, 2011, 05:58:04 PM »
I ordered an Otterbox for my iPad 1 (from Amazon) the same day I ordered the iPad from Apple. They arrived one day apart. Since the iPad 1 is older the case was discounted to $14.95 and came in at about $24 with shipping and tax.

It's polycarbonate and silicon rubber and very heavy duty. I wouldn't drop it to test it, but seems like it would endure a 3 foot drop with no problem. It also included a skin for the screen, but I wasn't too happy with it and will get some other brand when I feel I need to.

The Otterbox case has a removeable cover that goes over the screen and doubles as a stand providing two different positions.

Check it out on Amazon or at the Otterbox website. It's $80 from them !

thanks for the heads up on the otterbox i got one for my evo and love it, can toss the phone around and not worry about it, didnt realize they made them for ipads. i hate apple but may look into seeing if they have them for tablets as well.
