Awesome, sounds like you have a lot of sorting to do lol hopefully make some decent money.

This wasn't the case with your auction since the units for the most part were things nobody wanted but just wanted to make a point about buying every unit at an auction or even every unit on the circuit for the day.

Some people may disagree with me and say may the best man win but in my area there's kind of an unspoken rule that once you get 2, 3, 4  units go home for the day. It's kind of bad form to buy up everything the whole day. In m y area you do that and get people pissed off and then you have no just one but several people running prices up on you from then on and it becomes the crowd against you.

Your situation was not like this but it reminded me of this scenario and figured I'd mention it.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: confused about times
« on: August 23, 2011, 10:54:34 PM »
Well if they really were going to have in it at 1130pm I would go, hell, dont think there would be alot of competetion, if any. :)

But I would think that they were either given you a hard time or got confused between am and pm. Regardless, as suggested earlier, call them when it gets closer and verify time and date, as well as how many units there are then.

I was thinking the same thing, I'd be there in a minute, howver I must say I think we all may think alike as everytime I go out of my way to go to an inconvenient auction thinking I'll be one of a few there's record crowds. Last Christmas eve was one of those.

jross intersting topic. I was thinking the same thing recently. I love that show gallery 64 or auction kings or whatever its called.

In my area, Chicago, I property is so expensive that I don't think you coudl justify having a business thats open maybe 3 nights a week and the rest of the time is essentially just a storage space thats sitting idle.

I suppose there's ways you could open other revenue streams like being a we sell your stuff on ebay store, doing construction or restaurant liquidation sales during weekday business hours and doing the auction house stuff in the evenings a few days and a weekend night a week but still it would be tough.

The other thing most auction houses are in smaller towns where its actually as much a social event as it is an auction. In bigger cities there's so much other stuff to do bars, clubs, shows, concerts, etc I dont know if people would come out to an auction on a Friday or Saturday night.

I love the concept though. I would love to have an auction house with unique items, serve drinks,et cand have it be a social event as well as auction.

Garage Sales / Re: do you tag items at your garage sale?
« on: August 23, 2011, 10:46:07 PM »
You guys make a good point about pricing. Lots of Mexicans come to my garage sales so price tags will help with any language barrier but more importantly like you said some people are shy or for whatever reason just wont ask.

Also when you see a cheap price it makes you buy crap you dont need. I can't walk through the dollar store without loading up a cart with a bunch of crap I totally dont need but when its only a buck you just tend to buy. Maybe I'll do like a few of you have suggested and set up tables this table is $1, this is $5, this is 0.50 etc.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: A few noobie questions...
« on: August 23, 2011, 10:43:31 PM »
Once you've been to a few auctiosn they probably won't make you pay the cleaning deposit but for a while they will. I've never paid a cleaning deposit as they didn't charge them back when I started but seeing others cleaning out units while I'm cleaning out mine basically the manager will do a walk through with you and if its satisfactory you get your money back.

As for registering show up a few minuts early there will be a sign in sheet on the counter, you really wont have any trouble finding it as the storage workers are normally nonstop asking if everyone has signed in.

There's normally a general sign in sheet and then at many places each person has to sign off on an individual sheet as well I guess saying you've read and understand the rules and everything I've never really read it that closely.

The Lounge / Vietnam Dong For Sale - Million Dong Lots $75 Free Shipping
« on: August 23, 2011, 10:40:35 PM »
I know you guys want my Dong lol. I got some Vietnam Dong for sale, selling million dong lots for $75 free shipping. If you buy 3 or more million I'll go down to $70 per million free shipping as well. Dong will be shipped First Class Mail with Signature Confirmation.

If you don't know about Dong your probably not interested but basically it's similar in logic and reasoning to why people are buying up Iraqi Dinars.

Garage Sales / do you tag items at your garage sale?
« on: August 23, 2011, 09:45:32 AM »
I was just curious if you guys put tags on items at your garage sale?  normally I do tags but was thinking about not doing tags and just saying make me an offer on what you like

I was thinking this for several reasons. A. maybe someone will offer me more money than I would have taken item 4. B. sheer laziness is save me the trouble of tagging. C. most people tend to haggle with you even if an item is tagged so why not skip the tags in just a go anyways.

I'm hoping to do a lot of bulk deals and bundling of items so thought this made more sense

just curious if anyone has had garage sales both ways in which worked out better

Craigslist / Re: Phone Verification?
« on: August 23, 2011, 09:40:08 AM »
I have to do that stupid phone verification all the time! Lame!

Jross are you sure you want posting under m4m? I ki I kid. yeah craigslist never use to make me do the phone verification now it seems like everytime I go to put up a listing they make me verify again

j ross I think the other people are right just clear your cookies. have you used any other phone number for craigslist in the past? I think they may only allow 1 account per number and then you have to wait 6 months to use another number not positive about that but I may have read something about that before

the only other thing I can think of is maybe it's an issue with a house phone. I know they have the voice verify option personally I normally have them send me a text message with a code maybe try a cellphone instead of the house phone and see if that works

Craigslist / Re: Phone Verification?

jross i think you may be trying to post in casual encounters lol for sale generally doesn't care if you have an account or make you verify.

just kidding i know some sections do like gigs and a i think certain subcategories of the for sale section. for verification it normally just has you put in a phone number and then texts you a new verification code no?

775
yeah it's surprising its so hard to sell lots or bulk items. I constantly see people on various forums asking questions like wehre can I get stuff cheap to sell at flea markets or on ebay. I see it asked all the time but apparently its hard to find them lol

776
I'm always collecting more stuff than I can possibly sell myself and am trying to clear out some space as well as just get rid of a lot of stuff I've been hanging onto to sell myself at flea markets and such. Just don't have time now and weathers going to be going downhill not that long from now.

Was thinking about putting an ad on craigslist trying to sell "lots" of merchandise at highly discounted prices to other flea market sellers and or ebay sellers. Anyone had any luck doing something like this?

its amazing how reality shows can make any job or hobby cool. everything from exterminating to storage auction hunting to trucking to cake decorating.

personally with shows like this i dont really like the story lines or the drama i like seing it from the actual business perspective not seeing some staged drama unfold between two characters. that said i think shows like pawn stars have just the right amount of storyline mixed in with the actual business at hand like when they go test shoot a gun they bought or something like that.

i really like that new show dirty money or whatever its called with the the guy and his son ratboy. cool take on junk/resale has the flea market aspect with the art and fixing things, cool combination. i dont really like the characters but the show is entertaining. kind of a cool take on resale as well. yeah a table is only worth whatever a table is worth but if you make it into a piece of art thats cool your salesmenship determines the price

778
ryedales are cool but unless yoursorting hundreds of dollars a week and selling your sort on ebay its not really worth buying one. I forget what I worked out but its a HUGE amount you'd have to sort just to makeyour money back. plus like you said hand sorting is fun and that way you dont miss out on steel pennies, wheaties, indian heads, etc. i like my machine because i can quickly sort pre82 from post 82 and then i have a smaller amoun to hand sort from wheaties nad indian heads

some people sell some cool home foundry kits and melt old copper pots and pans and scrap copper. if your burning wood nad making your own charcoal costs are probably not terrible but most people seem to use propane and your fuel costs are going to outweight any metal profits. if its just a cool hobby cool but if your looking at it as an investment or to sell the ingots you probably wont be profitable

779
This is even better for lazy auctioneers. In my area the auctioneers phone is blowing up with calls and texts all day long with people asking where they are, waht time will they be at such and such location, etc. Throughout the auction hsi phone is constantly going off.

With twitter he sends one tweet when leaving the facility instead of fielding a dozen calls and texts.

they are awesome but they are also $500 and $800 depending on model. They also sell one called the sniper or ace which is a lil over $100 but it has no hopper so really no better than my machine aside from having a nice slide and looking more finished.
