Flea Markets / Re: New Mexico flea markets, summer, 2013
« on: July 21, 2013, 08:34:30 PM »
This flea is about 10 miles north of Santa Fe and as mentioned is run by a tribal group.  I was there about 10 am and only 6 cars in the lot at that time (on a Friday).

The very first vendor I saw as I turned left inside the gate was of African descent. Her goods were all Africa based and looked of high quality.  There were several silver jewelry vendors and all of their merch seemed of high quality. I know a little about turquoise and similar gems and the workmanship, quality and prices seemed right. In a review I read of this flea several people said they did better with prices than in the Santa Fe plaza which is famous for its Indian created jewelry.

There were some "art" dealers and one rock/gem dealer who had really good prices but I had flown and rock weight adds up fast for a plane ride so I didn't buy any stock to resell in CA.

All told there were about 40 vendors in mostly semi-permanent spots (walls, canvas, etc) and other spots that weren't occupied...maybe they would be on a weekend.

If you get there (or have  been there) please share....not all of us are from CA, GA, TX or the far east !

Back home in California after spending 12 days in New Mexico and Colorado. While my main reason for being there was to see my brother in Santa Fe and then my two daughters in Denver, I of course had to conduct some business as well, if nothing but research.

I went to 3 flea markets in Santa Fe. Here are pics of the first one which was just down the road from an Indian puelo (reservation) and was run by the tribe. Note the camera requirements in pic one.

Nope, no photos allowed...so I didn't take any inside.

This shot was right at the parking lot before walking inside.

See next post for details about the vendors at this flea.

Flea Markets / Colorado flea markets, summer, 2013
« on: July 16, 2013, 08:24:02 AM »
Spent last week in New Mexico and am now in Colorado and will be hitting a few flea markets.
Denver has a big one (yeah, I know "that's what she said"), and some thoughts on that after June 22, 2013 when I get back to CA.

I'm on vacation in NM and Colorado and hitting a few fleas. Only have the iPad with me so will post observations and pics after June 22, 2013. Basically stuff is stuff, but in NM at least some differences.

Meanwhile, any NM people around to offer thoughts?

All full of stuff.

If it weren't for the partner aspect it would be an unbelievable deal; still good, but work out the details before the unloading begins...just my opinion.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Gold in Electronics

D :'(
Any electronics I can't sell, I'm piling up to eventually scrap.  I don't bother hunting for gold in them though.  Stuff like cpu chips and memory can be sold at a higher rate, but pretty much all your circuit boards can be sold by the pound.  Just have to find the right scrap yard.

Member craiglstauction did a lot of this..he hasn't posted for about 3 months, but look him up in the member's list and drop him a private mail. I think I spelled it right but maybe not.

Okay, got it...

I would be interested in hearing your views on what we have done "historically" in terms of women's rights (at one time they couldn't vote), equal pay for women for same jobs done by men, how historically we treated the  American Indian, the list is extensive, including (now) the elderly and of course gays..see recent gay marriage news.

There is certainly no one answer but open-mindedness is a start.

Yeah, but lets say someone wanted to rent a unit after business hours. Who wants to wait until the next day to get access to the unit.

This is like saying "I want to buy tires at wal-mart after business hours. Who wants to wait until the next day?"

This is comparing apples and oranges. Original post was about paying late fees, not renting a locker after hours.

Are there more reasons a kiosk won't work?

804
Uh...once having checked kiosk deposits, the staff would take off their lock and security tag if any.

I'd be interested in the other....going and going...observations.  How this concept is at least not an aid to managers if not..."the future of payment for storage lockers".  After all managers currently allow online credit card payments, why not this?

:o  My guess, Zero.

I'm sure you're wrong about that as I know Alloro obeys all laws...except for the occasional breaking of the speed limit ....    "but officer, I was only keeping the flow of traffic going."

Thanks for the two answers !  That says a lot more about the "profit". I do some of what you say in each of those two posts, but the two state thing is not a concern for me as an example.

Tracking overall profit has been easy...ZERO! In last three years NADA.

Will get to that quoted statement above in just a minute, but meanwhile...

I can't believe you haven't done a more accurate analysis of your profitability since all your other assesments seem so spot on as to approach to buying, selling, etc.  I would have thought that you would have closely figured in expenses such as gasoline, storage, dump runs, purchase price, etc and would have balanced those off against the money coming in.

Now to that ZERO profit statement. Are you saying that you just BROKE EVEN on all the locker work you've done...or worse, LOST some money during the total time you've been doing it?  I know it's fun to at least search for the goodies and anticipate the goodies, but if you truly haven't made ANY profit over the long haul, how could you have kept it up for so long?

I track mine month by month, include all expenses (even data purchase for the iPad, entry fee to some auctions, gasoline, etc) and know what the monthly and yearly ratio is on a running basis. I couldn't just go with a ballpark figure.

I have one friend who buys a fair number of lockers on a regular on-going basis; he stated the other day (after about 1.5 years (to 2) of doing this that "I started with $5,000 and I have $5,000 now". To me that's a lot of work for staying "even".

This fellow has a store that he admits after about 8 months of operation is "breaking even" so at least he is tracking that a bit more diligently. He does better at his 6 times a year yard sales saying he does between $2K and $3K each time, (frankly I don't believe that) but even if true, remember he buys lockers regularly for which he pays $800 to $1,500.

Anxious to hear your response on the ZERO profit statement.

That is a euphemism airlines use for "fat traveler".

Easy to see that the airlines at least acknowledge that "fatties" take up more space than the 17" between arm rests and are "sensitive" to these travelers' needs (and OUR needs) for a safe and COMFORTABLE trip !

I don't need an extra seat but I have traveled next to some who should have bought two seats and it's not a pleasant experience.

I'm flying this week and found this link as I browsed around the airline website.

Now that I have a store....

Craigslstauction hasn't been active for about 3 months here, rockintheretro and the gal from Florida have been absent for what seems like a year.....pretty DULL around here.

Maybe I'm just tired from a day of selling at the flea market, but this isn't for me.  Good luck to those who use it or find a way to make it work for them.
