Stories about Storage Auctions / Auction Scene #7...July, 2013
« on: July 02, 2013, 09:03:20 AM »
Opening the new month with temps over 105 degrees for 5 days in a row in central California and flooding in the east !

What a way to start a new month, but it looks like the summer temps might be making the crowds a little smaller, and maybe the newbies are finally seeing there are few fortunes to be made unless you're in the tv end (or the website publishing of storage related activities  ;D)

Speaking of high temps....Death Valley in California has been flirting with 117 plus temps. Maybe Charli of this forum can comment on what it's like there this first week of July.

We've all heard managers talk about the sad stories that renters give about not being able to pay their bills and the subsequent loss of their belongings.  Some of us have even had contact with these former locker owners and their weeping pleas for their stuff back.

Here are over 100 complaints from former locker owners, many of them aimed at one chain in particular and not all deal with losing their belongings..complains vary from bad management, increased fees, etc, etc.

That's a matter of opinion of course (and ratings) but this story from early May, 2013 seems to think so.

Here's a quote from the story and the link to the full story as well.  The quote talks about Darrel's $300,000 to $1,000,00 art find...they're selling for $700 each on his website.

"Storage Wars" has turned a once sleepy $22 billion industry into a field of dreams where people think immediate riches await them. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, most storage units contain mundane household items, and the odds of landing a big score such as the $300,000 worth of Frank Gutierrez artwork that "Storage Wars" cast member Darrell Sheets found last year are fairly slim. (Fans can buy the paintings on his website at $700 each.)

Here's the scoop on a new way to get locker renters to pay their bills...lets them pay anytime of day or night.

This might mean even fewer lockers up for sale if these devices allow partial payments without any human intervention coming into play to stop such a thing.

eBay / Got an invitation from eBay
« on: July 01, 2013, 10:45:18 PM »
to look in on their eBay Wholesale website.

Looked rather quickly but didn't see anything that jumped out at me as being potentially profitable at my flea market (or reselling on eBay).

Okay.   Thanks for the second post.

Yep, my main rant in the posts above was just about "talking" to what I thought was a machine. Those folks work from a script whether its computer help desk or whatever and they sound so robotic sometimes I think I am talking to a computer...hence the questions I asked "her".

After I paid the $1 (not $15 or $20 or whatever from carfax) I did go ahead and look it up on the California DMV and got basically the same info.

I think what is happening here is that the charitable organization hasn't done anything with the paperwork they have and therefore nothing can really pop up (mileage, etc). I will know more on Monday or Tuesday I think...if they open !

I was looking at a car on a closed used car lot....a lot that sells cars donated to a charitable organization....and all I had was the vin and license plate number.  I was one letter off the other day when I sourced the California DMV so today when I had the right number I tried this commerical outfit first.

My goal was to find out what year it was as it looked the way it did many years running. Of course I was hoping for current mileage too so I could go in armed with good info when it came time to actually talk turkey with the seller.

All the basic report and the $1.00 report showed were year, etc. No mileage...it showed the mileage it originally had on it when it was bought in 2007 which was 6 miles.

More later.

The Lounge / Outsourced assistance on the internet....re...VIN lookup
« on: June 29, 2013, 03:40:59 PM »
I submitted a vin number to an outfit online that offered a free basic report. I got that and it gave me the info I wanted (the year of the car basically) and when I saw it was only going to be $1.00 for a full report I went ahead and paid that. The report I got back left a lot to be desired (the reason for that later) but I decided to try their live chat answering system. Here’s the last part of that; this is after they asked for my account info (with them) and the vin # I was looking for.

I told them just to look at the acct info they requested for the ONLY request I had dver made and they came back with the numbef and asked me if that was the one I was talking about as being incomplete.

DUH ! It’s the only one I’ve ever placed with you and it was 10 minutes ago!

Anyway, “she” said I would be contacted by her superior. Here’s the last part of the conversation. My thought was maybe she was a machine so I asked her a couple of questions that might prove me right or wrong.

*****

Sherry: Brian will contact you via email.

you: will a text copy of the conversation you and I have had be maintained in your system so I do not have to repeat everything should I not hear from him?

Sherry: I am sorry but we do not save chat history.
you: OK, two last questions. In what country are you sitting now? What is the three letter word that is the opposite of DOG?

Sherry: Our customer support phone # is 1-855-482-6465. We are available 24 x 7.

you: I thought if you answered those two questions I would know that you are in fact a human being and not a machine. Can you answer those two questions?

Sherry: For office location questions please contact customer support at 1-855-482-6465. We are available 24 x 7.

Sherry: GOD.

Thinking maybe this was a human being as a computer  would have trouble coming up with the answer GOD (reverse of dog), but the fact she kept spitting out the phone numbers and never told me where she was (probably overseas somewhere) always ticks me of (being out of country).

See post #2 for why I didn’t even know the model year of the car I was looking at on a lot.

eBay / Re: Appropriate amount of time
« on: June 28, 2013, 01:50:08 PM »
Question: what is the appropriate amount of time before contacting seller about shipping?

My experience with post office tracking is this:

1) After first day has gone by I click on the tracking number...nothing shows.

2) Repeat above each day for 2 or 3 days if item is coming across country.

3) At some point item arrives at my door. Check the tracking number that day, nothing shows.

4) Check the tracking number a day after item is delivered...sometimes shows delivery has been made, sometimes doesn't.

Bottom line, USPS is nothing like UPS tracking. UPS shows arrivals and departures at every stage of shipment.

Here's another site covering the exit of Barry.

All the network publishers printing this story say the same thing.

Sorry to see you go Barry...you were one of the two true attractions on the show !

After about 30 units I am done with the game.

I'm in the Central Valley too (see my signature below) and after almost 400 buys in 10 years I cut way back about 1 year ago. Used to buy one a week. Slipped to fewer than 2 a month about 10 months ago and now in the last 7 months I have bought 2.

Like member Alias I am pretty much just "picking" and while I don't have the buying (and selling) public of around a million he has up north (within 20 minutes of him), I've been happy with my buys and sales.

As another member said, you gave it a shot. Most don't make it beyond a half dozen or so buys or even get around to buying one after going to a few auctions !   ;D
