Got a late start today on the "Friday Starts"
Man, people are out! All I hit were gone thru well by the time I arrived.
Really wanted to get some wood carving tools at one and guess that's what everyone wanted. Not one to be found.
Had some really cool army stuff but way overpriced. 1940-60s era foot lockers for $85!
Vietnam medics strechers for $150?  Cool but not that cool.....or profitable.
Did get a cabinet of drawers of nuts/bolts/screws, some hardware, dowels, casters.ect.....all for wood working.
Got it all for $10 just cause I wanted the set of files and electric staple gun shoved in the back that I hoped they wouldnt, and they didn't, notice.  ;)
And when I got home found a nice set of fine carving chisels in leather roll up case.
But karma got me. Files are almost dead, staple gun doesn't work and chisels are a starter set you can pick up for $20.   :-\

So back to threads topic, on a three day sale I've always found Sundays 50% off to only be good for large furniture and cheap kitchen/home ware.  Good for personal items you need but not for resale items.

Adding a question myself........
What's your opinions on "digger sales"?
Getting more common with this one estate sale company.  It's frustrating to me. Gotta dig thru, collect, carry around, then find employee to ask price.....just to find they want way to much.
Positive is you can negotiate a lot price better but I usually on get 1 or 2 items.

Man, between you and movieman.....this site is just full of rats! lol.  ;D
...................
I see the same around here with low end designer jeans. No clue where they get them.

We hit St. Vincent's de Paul every spring cause a local snowboard company donates a ton of clothing that didn't sell. (and sometimes boards)
Get a snowboarding coat for $75 that retailed at $300. Pants for $50 that were $150.
And a few years back I or a new board for $75 just cause it had a graphic design flaw. Found the same one at snowboard connection for $600.

Back home.
Good times with niece and new born nephew.

Didn't get around to much pick'n.  Estate sales were mostly big items.
No nearby auctions that fit my time frame.  Obviously had to be in the first few days and small units so I'd have time to clean/sort and ship. Though my brother said if I did get something he'd eBay/CL and take a cut. But I'm a "no partners" guy. I'll pay you a set amount to help with something or commission on individual piece but that's it.

So came back with some trinkets. Rusted spurs. Hand made jewelry. Nice old holster.
No clue if I'll make money. Just looked cool so are in the category off if I can't sell I'd like to have them anyway so not a loss.
Also, some rocks for the old guy at he swap. Another thing I have no idea if he'll want but didn't cost anything to carry them home so....?
And then the weirdest item I've ever carried on a plane and wasn't even sure it's legal.....
Turtle shells.  Found some while hiking. Sun bleached. Clean.
Figured down there they are common but here?    Maybe some will be intrigued. Again, free so why not......

First off, I'm amused when they said it had big ticket items like fridge, washer, dryer......
To me, those are a hassle. My area you get those free off CL. Or really, really cheap.
Not that you can't make money but they would have to be pretty nice to make it worth my effort.
Some people would say "I made $200 of the fridge!!"
I say "I had to lift and move this big ass thing for only $200".  ;D
Appliances are just in my "lazy zone". lol

Maybe it's cause I just started doing the personal storage lockers and have bad memories of cleaning out Company units with dozens of broken hot water tanks and dryers and stripping them for scrap.....not fun.

What I was really wondering is what they donated? As pointed out by Cobia,  "zero rescaling experience" might have played a roll. Might have lost but maybe not as much had they known what to do.
I mean, if goodwill will take it? Then obviously it can be sold.
Yard sale that raises $50 is $50 less lost.    And did they inventory it out to at LEAST get a maximum tax write off?

Story just say they lost $1600 but then says they had sold some stuff....so what was the real loss?

Anyway, this story should be a featured item for newbies to read.  ;)

I disagree.  Points to character.
If said they were living in it and using it for a bible study group would you have a problem with it? Shows character of individuals.

Not that sex in a locker is automatically bad.
Story could have been a newly married couple got caught. Most would just think "oh how embarrassing" but no big deal.

"fornication" was used to set up in our minds the character of the persons involved.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Selling Direct TV equipment
« on: May 13, 2012, 04:55:22 PM »
As far as I know it's legal. My brother bought his off eBay and if eBay allows the sale then......

Where im at the tv/cable/sat companies have to by law allow you to buy your own equipment. Can't force you to buy or rent from them.

My brother also uses the direct tv equipment for other purposes. He positioned sat dish and "stuff" to get the NASA communications. All public info and legit. Not like hacking it.  He's just a geek and likes to watch that stuff.

Guess I shouldn't make fun of him. I watch the airport channel. Just people arriving. Don't know, it's entertaining to me.  :-\

Back on topic.....
Don't know of any laws against selling the equipment.

Tree sap I use good old rubbing alcohol. Found nail polish removes paint on some cars, mostly old oxidized cars though.   And I always have gallons of alcohol around for putting clear bra's (3m protection) on cars.....and I'm not wasting my good nail polish!  Jeez.   ;D

Window tint?   Take a black garbage bag and cut it open.  Press it to the out side of the glass and cut it to shape of window. Jump inside. Spray a heavy mist of water on tint and press plastic so it sticks.  Let bake in sun for a while.  Should peal off.
If not, try again but use 1/2 h2o & 1/2 rubbing alcohol.

Anything that doesn't peal off?  Add some dish soap to mix, spray heavy and scrape with razor.  Careful though. Some window will scratch on inside.  And lacquer thinner will get off the little itty bitty bits of sticky crap.

Side windows are a b*tch. This method works best on back window but have done it on side windows too.
You can YouTube a method for using a heat gun but I haven't had great results this way.

Why did you throw in the detail of fornication? Grow up.

At the law firm we called that a 'reference of character'

Right or wrong it works. Say they were living in a locker? You could get a "oh poor things" reaction.
Throw in "fornicating" and the general consensus is they are low life's.......

Well we aren't to concerned with what it does to the paint cause we have the facilities to fix most screw ups.  Plus they are used cars so as long as you fade the paint evenly....  lol

The engine degreaser works great for bringing white paint jobs back to looking good. Not the spray stuff. That has something in it that will eat the paint off. Comes in gallons.  I'd suggest doing a test area with watered down degreaser first.

Go to your local auto body supply store and you can get surface clarifier. Removes all mineral build up, water spots.....
Clay bars are great . Ask them for the softest, least abrasive one.  And do a test spot with this to. Some are real abrasive and sands the clear down.

You can YouTube how to use.

The above technique should work if the bugs are fresh but one they etch in your screwed.

Should add that I don't use this mixture on cars more than 5-7 years old. Maybe up to 10. Judge each car by paint quality.
The new clear coats can handle it.

And I'm in a mild climate. Would defiantly do a test area first in a climate like yours. Direct sun, heat, humidity, salt.....all can take its toll on the clear coats durability.

And if you do try it, do it in the shade. It will streak if mix dries/bakes on car. Can be fixed but is a *****.
And try to avoid getting degreaser on glass. Puts a film on it.

But even if you don't try it, I'd suggest the clay bar. Clean's windshields fast. They grab everything off.

Pick'n hasn't been great.  Found some nice things with profit margin but all to big/heavy to transport.
Had some estate sales lined up for today but instead took my niece to the Fort Worth zoo. Priorities ya'know.

Think I might just go lay down some wagers on the ponies tomorrow.  Odds of making money might be better.  ;D
......actually.....with the gas it takes to get around down here ..... That might be true. lol

Being swarmed by the little buggers. Don't ever recall them being this bad.

Don't open your mouth while outside you may get an unexpected snack.  :-X

Their dead bodies eat your cars paint if you don't get it off.

Maybe that was what is was......

Used car market is in such bad shape due to economy and still hasn't rebounded from the whole "cash for clunkers" deal that we have been doing not only online auctions for cars but actually sending people outa state to bid on cars. Hawaii is great cause they cycle thru rental cars so often (but trashed cause of sand and salt water) but Miami has a lot of he higher end cars.
We got 10 cadillacs from the Miami auction and half of them had such bad "bug damage" that I ended up just sanding down the front bumpers and painting them.
Most all need to be at least cut and buffed.

I usually just mix a gallon of engine degreaser and quart of soap, no water. Spray entire car with surface clarifier (like a CLR product but more acid based), wash with mixture, more clarifier and clay bar then rinse with 300degree pressure washer.
Even that didn't get the bugs off!!

It use to be that all the large facilities here were 24hr access.
Now there are just a few. Most you have to be out by 9pm.
It was due to so many people living in units. Couldn't prove you were living there with 24hr access.
People, if caught, would say they were getting something or whatever.

Then, the increase level of people making meth late at night might have had something to do with it.  ???
