Gave up on my quest for junk silver
« on: April 09, 2011, 05:44:43 PM »
I had a post a few weeks back about check for junk silver. Not a bad idea to check coins you find in units as who knows how long they have been sitting there but just not worth it to get them in bulk from the bank just to sort through. They all come from federal reserve so most of the good stuff has been picked out already.

Bought 3k worth of half dollars the other day. Got one pre 1965 half dollar so 90% silver and another 1966 so 40% silver. Just not worth the time.

Speaking of time...how long did it take to go through $3,000 in coins

It takes a little while reguardless of how you do it but found a relateively quick way to do it. Rather than looking at the face of every coin you can basically just split the role open and hold the roll in your palm still in the form of the roll.

Look at the edges of the coin, if you see copper color throw it back if you see silver it's either a pre 65 coin or its a brand new coins that hasn't ahd the coating rubbed off.

This is a lot quicker though as you can sort through a $10 roll in a whole 5 second instead of sitting there examining each coin.

At my job I work with money so always take a look at coins but but going to stop buying a few grand worth of rolls. You can't bring them back to the same bank or they will get fed up with you real quick buying all their half dollars busting them open and then returning 99% of them so you wind up having to run around to severl banks to cash them back. Justnot worth the hassle

I hadn't even thought of taking them back! I assume you roll them again (or take them in with the split seam) and you have to have a dialogue with the bank about that too. I remember years ago taking in just a $10 roll of quarters and having to write my account number on the paper wrapper in case it came up .25 short !
