I think pre 2010 people had no idea what we did and basically just throught we were weirdo garbage collectors.  SW brought it up to "ooooh you do that I love that show ... were you ever on it??? and now its like "eh".  I can still throw a good story together at a get together though about it that gets people oohing and ahhing about "treasure"

My brother has been helping me for years and actually first got together with his girlfriend because she asked him what he did and she loooves the show.  At least one of us got something out of it.

I guess I'm the evil one but if I see someone bidding on their unit I go for it.  They are trying to get it back for a reason and worst case scenario they will stick around to buy it after I had a chance to go through it real quick.

I have gone to VA from NY for a good room, which is about an 8 hour trip one way so I'm not saying that people don't do it ... I'm just saying she wouldn't do it, especially not on that room.

She fixes furniture.  They just ran out of rooms and she wanted to get on so she popped on it.  She probably ended up selling it to ivy anyway behind the scenes.

I just saw the very special monday episode with Mary rather than Dave.

First the fact that she is from texas and buying a giant tool room is ridiculous.  2nd the fact that of course there is a lady hair dryer in it shows how they are running out of things to stage with.

As I've seen them simply walk away from the unit and production pays the 1800 got junk bill to clean it out or they just give it to another bidder gratis it bothers me when this little thing is buying these kind of rooms.

We have a couple of woman in my part that do it full time and they wouldn't even look twice at this room.

Thats a shame I actually liked texas.

Yeah, I don't think he's gay either. Gay men care about their appearance.

What gets me is that Dan acted like he didn't know who Mary was. Come on, you know he watched the Texas version.

I'm sure production told them someone was coming and to act aloof but I doubt they told them who it was.

Just like when dave came back and ivy didn't know who he was ... so you are on a show and dont know who the biggest character for the first 3 years was .. who was in all the papers for suing them and who you were brought in to replace.

They dont even try any more.  It would have been good for him to say aren't you the guy that lost everything because he was too full of himself/greedy ..etc.  Give it a little bit of realism.

might just be your area auctionguy, im still finding an ounce or more a month in gold, unit quality overall has gone down a bit though. and that may have to do with the economy. people are storing crappier stuff because they have crappier stuff. my opinion, maybe im just in a honey hole

Thats great! ... I haven't found so much as a single earring at the bottom of a purse in months.  I am also going after different rooms these days so that might also play into it.

In my area we have:

The drug dealers - the spanish crews that spend thousands on units ($500 for an empty 5x5 with a garbage bag in it), literally throw all of the contents of the units into a 18 wheeler and then half of it goes into the dump and then the rest goes into their "store".

Clearly a money laundering operation

The collector - only goes for rooms with age, the more dust the better.

The tool guy - The guy always telling everyone hes looking for a "tool room".  Bids the room up way past the value of the room because he sees a dewalt screwdriver or god forbid anything snap on.  We have many of these.

The mechanic - the guy that buys any room with any sort of car part or motorcycle

The family man - The guy that brings his whole family to every auction.

The amazon/ebayer - only sells via online and wants only brand new products in the box

The old timer - Every room that goes above $5 he starts to tell stories of the old days when every room was $5

The newbies - Everyone else

note: I was a collector but am now leaning towards amazon guy.  better profit but less fun.

agreed.. good one.

it wasn't scripted because they didn't tell them she was coming.  There might have been some production prodding during the walk to the different units.

Also if anything I would think Mary is a lesbian before I thought Brandon was gay.  He does kind of look like her brother.

You wouldn't know it from Mary's ditzy personality, but she has a degree from UT and she used to be an assistant editor for Architectural Digest.

I have a MBA in Finance     but that doesn't make me good at buying and selling junk.  However I'm sure she is far more intelligent than rene (thank god hes gone), ivy and darrell who can't put a full sentence together.

I'm hoping her appearance was a one off but if Dave isn't working they will have to figure something out.  I believe they are getting pay cuts due to declining advertising revenue so if there is another season it might have a new format, i.e. more reoccurring characters than main cast.

I don't pay much attention to the texas version .. what happened with that?

I would rather see dave than mary.  He can at least back up his threats and bs talk.  I also hate her laugh

a guy bought a unit with plastic tubs for a couple bills. looked like a standard mystery room.

he went to pick the first tub up, standard size we all see, and couldn't move it.  Every tub was filled with silver dollars.  It looked like scrooge mcducks money vault.

last thing I saw was $55k in cash that someone found.

the initial uptick was in 2010 when sw first came out.  Its all been downhill from there.

Besides the crowds getting bigger and prices going higher one of things I've noticed is that the rooms are getting worse.  Now that people see it on tv and know that it could happen to them they've started to pull valuables out.  Of course there are going to be exceptions but the days of finding a little gold in every room are long gone.

I expect a certain amount to be staged/scripted, especially if they are the only two carrying the show but when the staging involves faking that they are poor its a little much.

They live in a gated community, make the $500k+ a season on sw and now get probably 20k total an episode for this train wreck.  There is no way they are pulling in less than a million a year at this point.  Also whenever they are eating subway in the car throw on another $50k.

My house is filled with storage "treasures", antiques, artwork ..etc. and my wife hates it, my warehouse is filled to the brim but I still buy units .. she yells at me all the time about it...  all relatable.

They don't have to try so hard.
