General Storage Auction Talk / Re: got a biggie today.
« on: September 01, 2011, 11:23:41 AM »
People sale or attempt to sale matresses all the time in GA.  Don't know of any law that would prevent it.  Or if there is I don't know anyone that would enforce it.  Will have to ask one of my wife's deputies.

I think we see matresses in units so much as people don't know what the heck to do with them when they get a new or upgraded one.  They don't want to pay the dump fee so they "store it".

Only time I can really see "trash" going in a unit is someone was in a hurry to get out of an eviction or such and just dumped everything in the locker.  But that is just a guess.

I know the property I purchased at auction had a ton of trash.  The guy didn't have trash service.  So he burned his trash.  But he also kept bottles, soup cans, drink jugs, etc. and stored them in the sheds.  I had over 3 TONs of trash when I first purchased the place and still working to get rid of stuff.  So you just never know.  Of course he was a "handy man" and built the sheds/barn, bird houses, etc. out of scrap lumber and such so I'm thankfull.

I'm in GA if that is any help to you.  Everything is all over the place in prices depending on your location so bid how you feel.  I would make it a oddball amount however.  Wish you luck in your bidding.

I just have to ask....how much did you spend for that unit?  I'd guess $750 - $1K.  That is a very nice unit.  Thanks for all the pictures.  Let us know what else you find in there.

Gratz btw.

Most matresses that I see in units are crap, with stains, rips, etc.  I'd check your area craigslist to see if anyone has some up for sale and maybe call on a few of the "older" listings to see if they did sale.  The one on the left is junk imo.  But the sealy may be ok as it's a pillow top.  Don't see any stains in the picture.

The couch looks like it's toast also.  Everything else looks interesting.  I'd say it would go for about 250-300 in my area but we have a few big bidders that like "family / furniture" units.

They are just trying to cash in on the popularity and incrase revenue.  If people can't pay for the locker, how are they going to pay for insurance also.

It's like Aflac - if you can hardly pay your insurance and bills now how are you going to pay them the premiums.  Same with the storage units.  It may save a few lockers but don't see it limiting the supply too much.

laugh Bandit - that was cool of the guy.  Bet your daughter was excited and you going...oh boy.

I didn't bid up a locker any higher then $50 yesterday due to the fact it had 2 bags full of huge tigers, white tigers, etc.  While I wanted the hutch and desk I saw, there was no way my youngest daughter, maybe wife, and my 2 little nieces would of let me sale the stuff animals.  They overrun my house as it is.

@ acman - don't take offense to anything on these boards.  While you, myself, Chief, and others are new here we are all learning.  Any of the "old timers" that complain about noobs, etc. isn't directed at you.  For the most part it's directed at the people in their area at the auctions they are going to.  While some of us are near to each other, many of us are 3+ hours or more from each other.  This is just a place we can all vent our spleen in collective frustration.

Now - as for the regulars in your area and how they may treat you that is a different story.  In my area they just try to make sure all the newbies know this isn't TV.  If they are expecting to get rich they should just as well spend the $500 on lottery tickets then a unit.  I myself have yet to meet anyone that wasn't friendly, open to jokes, etc.  While I have bid against some of them, I didn't run up the bids just cuz.  Once my limit is reached I'm done.  Except for Mr. Chruch, and one guy that also owns a store, all of the regulars here are retired.  They do this to keep busy and make a little money.  So it's not as cut throat as other areas may be.

As for auctions - was going to hit one today at lunch but Mr. Murphy had to toss his hand into the equation.  Boss asked for a ride to a meeting she had at 11 also.  Not a smart idea to turn it down when we may have cuts so gave her a lift.  Still had time (just barley) to make it the 5 miles to the auction.  However, upon the 100+ traffic lights and the cardinal rule of when your in a hurry every slow poke granny gets in front of you I was 20 mins late.  Counted 30 cars in the parking lot for 5 units so said forget it and got some lunch.  So some of the crowds are still pretty large, while others are getting smaller.

Think auctions in my area that I know of are done till next tuesday.  Will have to call around and check.

He did very well.  That first unit would of gone $200 easy down here.  The second unit would prob of done the same.  With the yard tools, trash cans w/ coaster wheels, gas can, etc. people would of figured lawn cutting buisness or such and bid up the price.

I'd take that locker for $45.  It would of gone for $200 + around my parts with the organ and guitar case.  Nice find you had there.

Laugh - least I'm centrally located so can hit a few major cities if want to travel some.  Thinking of hitting a auction in Savannah on the 10th if kids don't have practice and we can make a day-trip out of it.  Hit auction, hit the beach, shops, etc.

I'll be up in Atlanta for a concert one saturday so may see if wife wants to go up early and check out one of the Saturday auctions up that way.  See if the circus is bigger then here.

If there is less then 5 people at the auction go play the lottery.  You just got lucky.

Seriously it all depends on the facility.  The auction I hit yesterday was only 20 people or so and most of the lockers went for under $100.  Talking with the state manager that ran the auction he stated he doesn't care what he gets for the units.  He just wants them cleaned out and off his books.  As he said the ad that must be posted in the paper is $700 by itself.  So unless some amazing units come up he's not going to make any money.

I've already seen a few very junky looking units that were pretty full go for only $5.

Flea Markets / Re: flea market noob
« on: August 30, 2011, 02:15:19 PM »
In my area the flea market is only open on Saturday and Sunday.  There are two markets about a mile or two from each other.  One is very well advertised but has higher table fee's and you mostly sit out in the sun.  The other isn't as well advertised but is lower fee's and shaded.  I'd say more people travel to first then the second.  However, most of the storage regulars say they do better sales at the second less popular market.

Went to the first of a two facility auction at lunch.  Was 6 lockers up for sale.  Very disappointing lockers - most of them were pretty empty.  As such prices were all under $100 except for the one locker with 4 matresses, tv, and some other furniture went for $150.  Crowd was about 20 people with half being regulars.  A few of the others may of been regulars that I'd just not seen before.  Get a report from father on how the other facility did.  Was four units there for sale.

You don't want her cleaning the locker as it wouldn't get done.  Thus, you would loose the deposit and maybe get the mgr mad at ya.  I'd of offered to load everything up in her truck w/ her friends if she paid up front.  If not, oh well.  As you say "PAY YOUR BILLS".

I have very little compassion for dead beats.  I have one in my family.  I do have tremendous respect and will help out those like my deceased father-in-law who raised 3 girls with little income, no HS education, etc. via plain hard work and determination.

Gratz again Movieman.
