Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Lookey Loos Part 8.....August, 2011

The more I look at the room the more I think "elementary music teacher" then lunch room.  I think that isn't really a one-band instrument like I thought at first but like a home-made percussion stand.  It has the bells, blocks, and stuff to be hit with drum sticks.  Also, looks like a conga drum (can't really tell) in the back behind the recliner.  Was an interesting unit that is for sure.  I'll have to remember to take my camera in the morning to try and snap a picture of the units and crowd.

Lol - I'm a long way from a "gushing optimist".  Even raising my eyebrows at some of the other disclaimers and such I'm finding in papers.  Really starting to wonder how many storage places do bid on auctions if they reserve the right and also how many reject a bid.  I would think they would be happy to reclaim any money.  Shrug - it will be a learning expirence and soon I'll be able to stop asking so many questions.

Thanks to everyone for all the advice / comments.

I'm sorry if it sounded like I was skeptial of the auctioneer (no idea who it is yet) or the location.  I just side on caution, and thus why asked if I should be aware that this isn't normal or is.  Since this is my first unit auction I'll be attending I wanted to know what would be the reasons for another 5 units.  Since they were not in the paper they couldn't of been lien holding units.  Thank you Roger and all for the info.

Was the guy with the 2 chairs and camel pack a regular...he sure look prepared for a whole day of auctions.  About what I would take for a 8+ hour estate auction but storage units???

I'd call that lkr the lunch room lady locker.  Those apple boxes and a few other boxes I see come from the lunch rooms at schools.  See an older chest under all the boxes and what looks to be solid wood furniture (furniture isn't my strong point).  But what the heck is that one man band contraption???

South East / So how many of us are from GA?
« on: August 12, 2011, 07:40:41 PM »
I know of about 4 of us that are from GA.  Are there anyone else?  Is everyone but me near Atlanta it seems.  Ask as I keep finding various listings for around Atlanta that I'll not attend but don't know if any of ya'll would be interested in them.  If you don't already know about the auctions.

Ok, plan to hit a storage auction that is about an hours drive from me.  From reading their local paper they have the following:
B029 Teeter-W/D, Outdoor Equipment, Tools
B046 Morris-Furn., Boxes, Ice Chest, Stuff Animals
C073 Foster-Boxes, Furniture, Baby Supplies
C077 Horsby-Boxes, Furniture
E165 Carpenter-Boxes, Furniture, Jewelry
F195 Corley-Furniture, Crafts, Books
F196 Thomas-Mattresses
F199 Callahan-Clothes, Boxes, Mis. Goods
F201 Stannford-Mattress, TV, Boxes, Storage Tub
G300 Tony-Boxes, Carpet, Suitcase
G309 Jones-Clothes, Chairs, Books
G315 Jones-Clothes, Furniture, Mis.
H368 Blake-Furniture, Microwave

However, when I just called them to check to see how many units they were down to she said they had 18.  They added a few of their own.  So now I'm like....hmm did they just stage a bunch of units or what is the deal.  The place was recently purchased and the name changed.

Nice catch Millertime, let us know any interesting finds you get.  I myself am looking for units such as that for my first lkr to buy.  I'm looking to test the waters this weekend but figure it will be a bust.  The local radio station was talking about Storage Wars yesterday and today and I just groaned.....and I'm one of the newbies.

Nice - I've found 4-5 auctions coming up for Suwanne.  I just live 2+ hours from Atlanta so staying local to start.  Let us know what they have.

lol - I've been doing this for years.  My daughters are into sorting coins now.  Oldest just found a 1891 IHC.

Even with prices of copper going down from Jan and July's high it's still a dollar higher then it was this time last year.

I love that sorting machine.  I keep thinking of buying one.

I had bought some of the coins but due to me being a collector.  I hadn't ever thought about doing that until read about it months ago.  By then it was a $1000 limit and now they have closed that loop.

Well looks like people are starting to pay up at storage units.  Had a 5 unit auction next thursday lined up.  It's down to 4 units already.  Will call on the 17th to see if it's worth my lunch hour to hit the auction or not.  Two different locations have auctions at the end of the month.

Just found an auction on Saturday.  I expect it will be packed but going to plan to attend to watch and learn.  Currently 13 units up for auction.

New to Storage Auctions? / Washer / Dryer and other scrap metal
« on: August 10, 2011, 04:30:27 PM »
I know scrap yards will take copper, steel, and the like.  But do they pay for washer / dryers and the like?  Keep trying to call my local scrap yard but never get an answer.  Do you get more money as a unit or if you take them apart.

Anyone have any luck at this?  I've read many threads where people find washer/dryers and such.  If they don't work what do you do with them?
