Picker's Paradise / Re: Picking at estate sales
« on: December 04, 2012, 07:57:13 AM »
I've not had much luck with estate sales that are ran by a company.  Most sales are fri - sun.  I will find one after work on a friday and stop in.  Even by then most 'cheap' items have been picked clean.  Most of the furntiure is either priced high or already gone.  The smalls are a hit or miss.  I did pick up some old style oil lamps for $2 each at one sale.

Now - if I can find the family estate sales -- those do much better.  Is just one giant yard sale for the most part.

Picker's Paradise / Re: Picking at garage sales

I love garage sales.  Sadly this time of year is finding fewer and fewer sells due to cold, dark, rain, etc.  Mostly only the "professional yard sale" people are still listing and I avoid them.

First thing I do when hit a sale is listen to how the people are responding to potential buyers.  I will also strike up a conversation with them to learn what is the motivation of the sale.  Also, to try and figure out how "in-love" they are with the items they have for sale.  If I see DVDs/Games and only those I want I'll offer a price for all the movies/games as a bundle.  Some days I get it and other times don't.  Never pay more then $1 per movie and normally it's $.50 per.  I also buy for my buddies thrift store.  So when find those moving sales, or other people that really want to get rid of furniture I'll work out a deal with them.  Sometimes I will pay "full price" on one item since it's already a fair price.  Then I'll get them to come down on "other" items on the 2nd or 3rd deal.

In general I have a rule of 5.  1-2 sales I hit the people love the stuff, and ask 90% of retail for, if not retail.  Another 2-3 people have fair prices but will not come down and thus no money in a re-sell.  But, I will find that 1 or 2 people out of the 5 that just wants stuff gone.  Those will make large and small bundle deals.  If it's late in the day they may even give you stuff just to get it out.

My first few months of doing auctions I would hit everyone one that I could.  Then I quickly learned which ones are worth going to and which are not.  I try to hit every auction that I can.  There is one place I will never go back to.  Have a few others I will attend if can but am very reserved in bidding.  Then have a few places I would love to hit but never have the day off.

If it's a saturday then for me it's jeans and a t-shirt.  If like today the auction is during or after work it's slacks n polo or shirt/tie (minus the tie).  Everyone knows me so only the newbies would look at me funny sometimes.  Since I'm only a small - mid size fish in this pond the cloths don't matter.

Won a tv for donating cloths?  Dang - I need to find a shop that will do that for me.  Or even a dang raffle ticket for every bag you bring in.

But But if we had a FAQ....half of our thread count may (would) go out the window?

Back on topic - today's auction has 83 units listed since we didn't do a auction in Nov.  Now - how many of those will actually come up for auction? Maybe 20.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Have you ever MIS-DIRECTED a NEWBIE ?
« on: December 04, 2012, 07:01:30 AM »
I have never given wrong directions or things of that nature.  I have however gave flippant remarks, or ignored questions of a few newbies.  Ones that are nice, respectful, and generally just have questions I don't mind answering.  After all wasn't that long ago I was in that state.  The ones that are loud, rude, etc. get the cold shoulder and no additional help.

I just love telling them "Yes, you have to clean it ALL out - including the roach infested bag of papers in the corner".  Or when I get a newbie that says they wanted to try this out like SW.  I ask them are they afraid of "mice, roaches, ants, snakes, etc."  The brutal honest approach works better then the misdirect.

I've had that issue with PS before.  U-haul is even worse.  They only give you 24 hours to clean the unit out.  Lucky the auction is on a friday.  One of the U-hauls the manager is a ahat and will not give you any extra time no matter how big a unit or how many you buy.  The other place he will work with you if you are a regular.  Many times he will give you all weekend to get things cleaned out if you buy a large unit or multiples.

I like my 3 caravan auction that is on a monday (we attend today).  He gives you a whole week to clean the units out.  So you get from that monday evening to the following monday morning.

For me it was my one and only "big" unit that I purchased and took a huge bath on.  Was a 10 x 20 or maybe even larger.  Had doors on both ends, lights, etc.  Had a nice radio, table saw, pipes, boards, bamboo dresser, another dresser, cool looking chest, etc.  Was heavy on the "tools" and looked like a handyman unit.  Silent bid auction.  Didn't listen to my first gut instinct and upped my bid by $300.  So I won the unit by $247 bucks or something like that.  All of the cords were cut or frayed to ribbons.  The large air compressor was bloth.  The bamboo dresser was nice on the end facing the door.  Other side was ripped at the top, and a cracked leg to boot.  In all I took a $700 something bath.  Didn't recover from that loss until late Jan of this year.

Other then that one big loss I've had a few break-even and $50-$100 loss units.  Most of the time those are on what I call "gamble" trash units that may result in some nice finds or a few loads to the dump and are expected.

Dec 1 found me at one of my faveorite 3 location trains.  However, this month they only had 7 units in 2 locations.  Mostly all regulars this time with a few returning old-newbies / new-newbies in the mix.  First facility was ok but nothing I bid high on (silent bid).  First unit at the 2nd location was interesting and I honestly just didn't know how to bid.  Two other units were nice and I know went for over $200.  Rest were so/so.  I didn't win anything - got outbid by $21 on one.

Now for the "how do I bid this" unit.  It was a 10 x 20 arts / crafts unit.  In the front you saw clear totes with craft magazines, paint brushes, paints, decorations, just a mix of stuff.  Stacked a good 3' - 4' high.  Look over that and you see a old wood box coca-cola carrier, some newer plastic 2 litter coke carriers, 2 or 3 wood plant stands with the heart design.  From 1/2 way in the rest of the 10x10 was taken up with totes.  Small to mid-size totes stacked 6' to 7'.  They were above my head.  Marked as "easter", "misc", "xmas", etc.  Wish I had a picture of the unit.  I know arts and crafts can be very lucrative or a huge to the dump pile.  I honestly couldn't tell which was the case here.  So I jotted down a $153 bid and went to the next unit.  I was outbid by a good margin.  I figured the unit would go higher but since I have no exp in arts/crafts I just couldn't bid to much for the unit.

Tuesday finds me at my other 3 train location and then u-haul on friday.  Tuesday is not the normal time/day for this facility but they split Nov and Dec due to holidays.  Will see how it goes.

I have different trunks that I hold seasonal items in if I think they have some value.  Most of the xmas stuff gets donated or tossed.  Goodwill will not take any more xmas trees for example.  At the store I help out in we setup a large table with xmas stuff.  So far have only sold 3 ornaments.  IMO - it is a coin toss.  Most of the stuff is small and easy to store.  The large items you sell now or out it goes.

I have sold snow globes and do semi-well with them.  Have a few collectors at the local flea.  Outside of those people, and my daughter, the rest sit for a bit and then go to Goodwill.

Like Cobia I'm looking and storing spring stuff now if I can find anything.  Searching the few yardsales for tools, pots, patio furniture, etc.  Talked with my buddy and we are going to stock up on decent furniture if we can find any for Feb/March when people get refund checks back.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: yooo I found 2- Ancient Roman coins!
« on: November 28, 2012, 10:05:45 AM »
Take them to your local coin store and they should be able to identify them for you.  If they are legit coins that is.  Many of the "roman coin" auctions on ebay are fakes.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: $10,000 Storage Unit?
« on: November 28, 2012, 09:59:39 AM »
I myself have not even gotten close to 10k.  We all have read of people hitting the unit lottery and finding gold in the units.  But we read about that only once a year maybe?

I know of only 1 person in my local area that has made over 10k on a unit, and that was 4-5 years ago.  He still tells the story of him and his partner at the time spending 3k on a unit.  They sold the contents for over $20k.

If you can find a nice coin collection, lots of guns, or tons of jewelry you can hit that 10k profit mark.  I'll keep playing the powerball however.  Think my odds may be better that way ;)

My auctions are done for the month due to work.  However, I have noticed the same as Cobia.  Many of the auctions I did attend had a larger number of regulars coming back.  One of the auctions was like a high school re-union.  We still have a number of newbies, 3 month newbies, and the like.  But more and more units are going to regulars, and the general price has come down.

I've seen a hodge podge in my area.  A few of the places list in small papers, change/cancel the auction at the last hour, or don't even list the auction.  My buddy finally got in good with one of the local storage owners and just gets a call every now and then to come look at a unit and offer a price.

One place that has a 3 location caravan changed the day they do auctions on last month to try and get more of the regulars to come in.  They decided to move back to saturday as the regulars were not paying as much as the saturday newbie crowd.  Plus, was more work on them during the week.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Business licenses, Taxes & Such
« on: November 20, 2012, 07:31:40 AM »
It is really going to depend on where you live, where you sell, etc.  I do this as a hobby and thus don't have a license, tax permit, etc.  I do keep up with how much I spend and sell just in case.  Since it is a hobby while I can't deduct my losses, I can offset any gains with my expenses.  I really don't make much money.  There is a cap on how much you can make before you have to report it.  I am not sure what the cap is.

Many of the auctions I attend will charge you sales tax unless you have a license.  So then I don't have to worry about the tax.  I still have an issue with the tax since it was already taxed in the manufacture and then again in the original sale of the item.  That is a different story.
