Stories about Storage Auctions / Storage Auctions Rumor Mill...
« on: April 23, 2013, 08:35:34 AM »
I heard a story on the caravans this past week that someone that was pretty cool was let go from one of the auction companies. I noticed on the Storage Auction E.....s site that one of their employees is no longer in the picture they have posted. So, being inquisitive (nosy) as I am at times I started asking, and I heard that this one employee (I'll call him Bryan) had to basically quit because the management insisted he decide between doing to an out of town auction or being with his child in the hospital. Well, of course he told the owner he was going to be at the hospital with his child. He is now with another company already and seems to be very happy. I hated seeing him leave the company because it was nice seeing him in our area, but I don't blame him a bit for his decision. Seems the owner is getting a big head since he has been on TV a few times (rumor has it)  I guess auctioneers come and go as quickly as trainers at a gym. I for one will miss Bryan and his wife, they were really good people from what I've experienced. Yes, this is gossip I guess but hey, I am a woman and we know men would NEVER gossip.  ::)

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Storage Managers in Sacramento
« on: April 23, 2013, 08:16:33 AM »
Well, I finally saw the guy that has been mentioned. He wasn't in a wheelchair but a scooter and with a dark haired short woman. Also, surprisingly enough it was in Brentwood that I saw him. Once I saw his face and the woman I remembered them from before. I never got to talk with him but got a picture, of the crowd of course. :-) I haven't been to too many auctions in the Sacramento area for a while to run into them again. I don't think I have been to any auctions on Del Paso (the location that was mentioned originally) so I don't know which one it might be.

Craigslist / Re: Craigslist Flakes...Let the 2013 Flake Count Begin

Question about meeting at your storage unit.. How do you work out the gate access? Do you meet them out front and squeeze 2 vehicles through the gate? Do you pack your vehicle with your product and bring it out front?
We usually get to the storage unit early and get things ready. Our storage facility does not have a man-gate so once inside you must go to the exit gate only to get out. So, one of us will walk around to the front gate and code the buyer in. It's a bit of a pain in the butt that they don't have a man-gate but it probably makes it a little safer from people that walk the area.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Storage Managers in Sacramento

I had a private message response from the member who freqents the Sac auctions. The member will be making a post here soon.
Hi all, when I read the original message I also tried to do some research and checked with a few other people in the Sacto area but we are not recognizing this person. Granted a lot of times the picture doesn't look exactly like the person but this guy doesn't seem familiar at all. I am sure IF this is happening it will spread very quickly throughout the caravans. I know I for one will be opening my big mouth and telling anyone that will be affected by this issue. Reading his ads on eBay this guy is "hooked on phonics"  ;) but still smart enough to con a manager into doing something illegal or visa versa. If this guy is blowing smoke then he is making the facility look crooked, if he is telling the truth then they all are crooks. If I hear anything through the grapevine,  I will be posting.

He is disabled confined to a wheelchair, and he buys storage units. so I continue to stick my nose in his business and he starts bragging about how he has become friends with several managers of storage facility's in the area. Because he is disabled they let him pick through the lockers  that are about to be sold and he gets to the good stuff first that way
I know, this is Northern California and we should expect stuff like this to take place,  But WTF

Too bad you didn't get the name of he does this with and we spread the word. I can only think of one at this time that has his wife push him around. (assuming it's his wife).

Well, this post is quite the coincidence. Someone from RL Storage Auctions created an account on VirtualStorageAuction.com this morning at 9:00 AM.
The 5K bids on the RL site are a red flag. One way a buyer could potentially manipulate the auction would be to set up 2 fake accounts, then place a low bid using a legitimate account. Then use the 2 fake accounts to run the price up to a ridiculous number where nobody in their right mind would even bid. After the auction closes and the fake bidder doesn't make payment, the storage facility will then contact the runner up bidder. Since the runner up is also a fake account, no payment will be made. Once they contact the 3rd runner up (the legitimate account) the scammer pays for the unit which he gets at a very low price.
Now this is interesting to me as far as the 3rd bidder. I wondered about that before and now it would make a little more sense to me why it would go so high. Amazing how the evil minds of man (and woman) can run.  ::)

Yea, that's IF they were legit but it does take 2 to make it get so high and it makes me wonder if their "system" can see how high the proxy bid is set to. Like I said, I don't trust online auctions like that since the prices are over the moon on them anyway. But this was ridiculous. That's one thing that scares me about facilities that take credit cards, you can get yourself into big trouble that way if you're not careful.

I got a chance to talk to my buddy the auctioneer today about how often people leave the auction without paying. First a little background info on this auctioneer. He has been an auctioneer for 25 years and is probably one of the top five storage auctioneers in the industry.

When I asked him how often people leave the auction without paying, I was surprised with his answer. I thought it would be a lot higher. He said that it rarely happens...maybe once or twice a year. This auctioneer handles over 1000 storage auctions a year, so those numbers are pretty impressive.

We were at an auction a year back with Luther D. in Dallas that we were high bidder until this kid bid it up and won. It got to 900.00, and we left thinking that was that; well the guy took off with his two buddies (all with their pants hanging down past their butts). Found out later they left and LD sold it to what he thought was the next high bidder (not faulting anyone) and ripped all of us a new one with a speech about being banned if we ever left etc etc etc...LOL  Seems the jerk wanted to see if the musical instruments were in the boxes (which they were) and that's all! Can't stand punks like that anyway..haha

So I just found out about a moving and storage auction in my area this weekend. 92 units! That's incredible for this area. From what I can tell, it's a strange auction. Apparently this facility has a lot of things that get lost during the moves, so they auction off sealed boxes in lots. This facility has a reputation for high end items shipped from overseas. Should be interesting.
UGH!! Good luck! Now I know I want to move back to Texas!! Central California units are pretty ugly right now. Would love to have something like that around here once in a while. I sure miss the Good Old Days. :-)

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: I got suckered.
« on: April 03, 2013, 08:28:12 AM »
$240.00 down the drain.  Bought a 10 x 25 unit loaded,  nothing worth crap.  Trash and more trash.  Then to top it off i sold a washer and dryer to an individual who acted like he needs it and it would be good Christian thing to give him a good price.  Then he flips it on craigslist.
Unfortunately we all have gone through this or will go through it at one time or another. We purchased a great looking unit that showed a very expensive vacuum cleaner and a few designer clothes with lots of well kept tubs (15 or more) along with two large filing cabinets. Bought the unit for 500.00  (more than we should have bid) and it bit us in the butt! The owners ran a realty business of some type and the tubs and filing cabinets were full of paper!!! Pounds and pounds of papers. Plus, the vacuum cleaner was missing a major part so we had to send for it. LOL Live and Learn and roll with the punches. This will happen many times over the years if you stay in the business. We win a few and we lose a few.  ???

Storage Facilities / Re: staging units.
« on: April 03, 2013, 08:22:16 AM »
I haven't a problem with the facilities staging the units. You can't blame them for wanting to get their money back BUT, my distrusting mind makes me wonder if they just happen to see something they like would they take it. There's good and bad with the staging and like almost all humans temptation is there, "I see shiny things" ;-)

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Box Truck or Enclosed Trailer?
« on: April 03, 2013, 08:18:34 AM »
I would say a Cargo Trailer. Big Tex sold us ours with the best price. I know there are a few Big Tex dealers outside of Texas but we did research etc for a new one and they were by far the best price. We have a 6x10 for now and plan to go larger at a later time. If you are into the rainy season the cargo is the way to go around here. Tarps over large items just do transfer well. JMHO

Online Storage Auctions / More reason to not trust online auctions...
« on: April 03, 2013, 08:14:16 AM »
A few days ago RL Liquidators had an auction running for a location in northern California. It looked like the same name was high bidder on all if not most of the units. The last hour several people could not get into the site at all to bid. One person I know of, called them and raised holy he** with them, calling them scams, cheats etc. lol...All they kept telling her was they had system problems and it was out of their control. She accused them of having their acquaintances bidding and messing with the site themselves. (or something like that). She told them that IF there had been system problems, why didn't they auction them again. No comment from them. She had them on the phone for quite some time. This is just one of a few things that are odd about this companies auctions. A few months ago there was a unit that looked like it might be worth 700.00 at it's highest and was at that price. We watched the last few bids rolling along and then all of a sudden 2 people shot it up to over 5000.00!!! No way it was worth that from what we could see from their pictures and videos but there you go. I wonder if there's a way to turn them in for investigation...hmmm..."something to ponder"...as my dad would say. ;-)

Since they just recently started shooting for SW Canada, I think it might be a bit longer. Can't wait to see what they pretend to find there!
