The Treasure Chest / Re: Making money on books
« on: September 18, 2012, 10:55:59 AM »
Until the store I found most of the books I had would hit the Goodwill pile.  I have sold a few books but nothing great.  For me the list goes something like this:

1) Text books - hit or miss depending on age.  Just got a bunch so hope they are a hit.

2) Cookbooks - I take these to my buddies store.  I may get $1 or less at the flea.  He gets $5 or more and we split the profit.  They either run very hot or cold.  Also, a fellow buyer loves them to take to auction.  He sells them in lots and does very well.

3) Paperbacks - these mostly go to Goodwill.  If they are sci-fi, CSI style, or military-fantasy I'll give them a few tries at the flea.  But at $.50 each they only go on the trailer if there is room.

I've had a few very topic specific books that I've sold quickly on half.com for $10+.  But, they are few and far between.

My Monday caravan has come and gone.  Crowd was up from other auctions but still not that bad.  About 20 bidders or so.  We lost a few of the newbies when it started to rain on us.  28 units up for sale this time.  Prices were mostly low, with a few great low buys, and a few nice lockers going for decent prices.  I didn't get agressive on anything since didn't see anything that really grabbed me and I'm full on inventory right now.  Did buy a $5 5x10 that had a bamboo ladder showing, some trash, 3 boxes with cloths, etc.  Be a quick 10 min clean out job.  Purchased unit as I saw a tan leather jacket and what looked like a box for an air matress.  That and $5 is nothing and very easy to make money on units like that.

Don't think I'll make any other auctions this month due to conflicts with work.  We will have to wait and see.

Cobia - most of the stuff I sell are electronics, odds n ends, etc.  Furniture I take to my buddies thrift store to move.

3 facility caravan - silent auction - 16 registered bidders, about 25 people total.  Was 3 old regulars, 2 6-mo regulars, and the rest new faces to me and I know for a fact 2 sets of newbies.  15 total units today.  I ended up with 4 units total for right at $200.  We had some nice tool units for a change.  If it wasn't for the newbies I would of won them.  As it is one newbie won 5 units (paid $300 for one tool unit) and their friend bought 2.  I know for a fact they were new as they had no locks, had to buy from facility, was asking all the newbie questions, etc.  Think they are going to end up haven to rent the units out they bought so many.

So I will be busy for the next few days helping wife and cleaning units....plus full time job.  If the ring I found in my $5.55 unit is real I will have found my 2nd gold ring in a year.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: keeping track of customers

I just use memory to know what I need to "look for" when I go out to the auction / yard sales.  Most of my buying is for my buddies store that they keep a list of who is wanting what.  It also keeps the inventory fresh so there are different things each time someone comes in.

For sales / auctions - I use excel to keep track of everything.  Is quick and simple.

StorME -
Did you write that in VB or what?  Sort of looks like a older VB 6 type of program.  I have some of the same icons for a in-house utility that I wrote for work.  Of course if it all came from MS I'm sure they use the same icon library.

As for spelling - I've seen the agenda issue many times, and have snickered to myself also.  I'm a very bad speller as MovieMan can attest to...I drive him nuts in some post :)  However, for software that you are going to publish I always have QA / Beta testers to look over it all to see if I spelled something wrong, have the wrong "flow" to the program, etc.  They have found things before that kept my errors out of the public / coporate spotlight.

That is nice Rockin - sounds like you did good.  The washer/dryer alone if works is your $200 right there.  Which would make everything else in that unit profit.

I missed auctions last month due to work.  Was sent out of town just before my 3 facility auction that my daughter loves.  Buddy said crowds were normal for that auction - and he got a 10x30 packed full for $950.  Missed some of the later auctions last part of the month due to work but those I normally miss.

This month's auctions start today.  Will be missing today's auction due to a meeting that was rescheduled due to Monday being a holiday.  Also, I will miss next weeks 7 facility caravan due to dang workgroup I was assigned to wednesday....grrr.  Good news - have 3 facility caravan on Saturday.  Not going to be many units from the sound of it.  Silent bid auction but sometimes I can get a decent score.

On the selling - both craigslist and ebay have gone cold again.  Not made it out to the flea due to work/family obligations.  So hopefully some of that will turn around...I need to make some money.

Yard sale picking has made me some money.  Have more inventory then anything since I keep buying and not had a chance to sell......

Sounds like a winner man.  Your prices seem to be in line with my area.  Except for the table.  For some reason those things don't sell very well right now.  However, if those are all wood style chairs I can get $20-30 per chair.

Have fun selling.

There was a post about that site and some others months back down in the selling or such section of the site.

Books can be money makers or just heavy trash.  I'm about to try a new avenue for my used books.  There is a 2nd-n-Charles store that opened in my area.  Only 9 stores I've been told chain wide.  Anyways they buy books, CDs, DVDs, Video Games, etc.  You can get cash or in-store credit.  So I'm going to take a few duplicate DVDs, some books that only sale for $1 online and see what "credit" I can get.  If get $.50 a book that is better then wasting time selling online / flea.  Mass production books are a slow mover anymore for me.

All of your questions have been answered in a number of different topics/threads on the site.  That and Movieman covered it all also.

As for the demographics of who stores items and why.  Well that is as varied as the different colors of leaves in the fall.

Many people in large cities that rent an apartment don't have room to store summer/winter or seasonal items and thus rents.  College kids store the dorm furniture/items during the summer in a unit.  Or as people say just have too much stuff, relative dies and they store stuff, etc.  After doing this for any length of time what all people store just starts to make you go HMMMMMMMM.

Picker's Paradise / Re: New Goodwill Store in town

With it that close you can least keep an eye out on things to pick and have a easy drop-off point for items you don't want.  I try and hit the goodwill store when I'm in town but of late it's just a wasted trip for me.  Years ago I could get computer parts, odds n ends, etc. to sell / flip.  Now the price they want is normally more then I can sell the stuff for.

Also - get in good with the manager.  From talking with the driver of one of the donation trucks I've learned many things about the place.  Each store is very different in how they operate / run in my area.  For example one of the stores just crushes all the plastic totes they get.  Don't matter if they have tops or not.  That is $3-$5 per tote at auction they are destroying.

What is sad is my wife would want to go with the medical examiner's office to sort / identify the organs.  I wonder if it was a newbie that bought the unit.  Bet they don't buy another unit again if so.

Welcome to the forums Cuban.  I'm glad you returned the personal stuff.  Some newbies will just trash everything that they can't sell.  Unless I'm told by the company to not bother I return as many photos, diplomas, etc. that I can.

Hope your next unit is more profitiable.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Cars in Storage Locker

Every stroage place that I know in GA sells the vehichle "As-is" and "parts-only".  We have had a few come up for auction in my area.  Many times they are only worth parts / scrap.  Now - if it does run you can get a title.  Your best move is to be very nice to the ladies at the DMV/tag office.  When I bought the property I live on at auction it had a truck, 2 homemade trailers, a single-wide, and some other stuff on the property.  This was a foreclosure, so anything on the property that was a "fixed asset" was mine.  The truck, etc. however had to be declared "abandoned" before I could get a title.  Of course the kids came and drove off in the truck the very next morning after I bought the property.

Now for a vehicle in a stroage unit i would do the following:

1) Ask the stroage facility if they had the police run the VIN (in case stolen).  If not you should call and have them do this before you touch anything.  Is a public service and free - other then time invested.

2) If not stolen as StorMe said run the VIN to check for any liens.
3) If no liens on the vehicle talk with the ladies about what to do in order to have the vehicle declared "abandoned" and getting a new title in your name.

Well I missed last week's auctions, including my 3 facility caravan due to work sending me out of town.  I did get to take my daughter to the local small town 4 miles from where I live.  In the paper they had 18 units, thursday was 12, and day of auction was 9.  Crowd was maybe 10 people total.  Was myself and daughter, 2 6-mo newbie couples, and a few other locals.  All of the locals were mostly 60+ year old guys I think just out for a look.  Of course the really nice sounding unit paid up...dang.  They changed from a "silent bid" to call-out that morning.  I had promised my daughter I'd take her to the auction before I found out I had to leave town.  So I was set to fly out 4 hours after the auction.  48 hours to clean units out.

1st - decent stove, fridge - nothing else.  They wanted $75 (no-bids) - finally sold for think $40
2nd - mirror, part of a large cabinet, large broken dresser - no bids
3rd - small closet unit - matress/box spring, some boxes, trash - $5 (daughter)
4th - mostly junk / trash, toolbox - $5 (daughter)  -- Auction guy said $10...I was like "PLEASE" - got a laugh
5th - fridge, not sure what else - $40
6th - packed 10x10 - chair, dressers, bags, boxes - I bought for $60 (bought for buddy - we split cost)
7th - 2 bags, tote, lamp. broken furniture - no bid
8th - table/chairs - some other furniture - $30 or so
9th - packed 5x10 - started to bid but was thinking of time.  Sold for $10

At end of auction they asked did anyone want the 2 no-bid units for 1 price.  I offered $5 if they would give me till NEXT sunday to clean out.  They took it and I paid $5.  Figure would make my $5 back on lamp, rest is trash but was already going to dump and it's a flat rate.

Least you got out of the house rockin.  Auction tonight for me but I'll pass.  Is too far out and the crowd is normally huge with high prices and crap units.  Excited about the auction this weekend...even if it will be in the rain.  I actually want it to rain heavy so I can see the "flow of water" around this facility.  Is in a small town, no fence, but decent size facility.  We have had over a foot of rain in last 2 weeks, with 5" in 2 hours the other day which caused local flooding.  Want to see if the units may of gotten flooded or potential to be.

Two other auctions monday, and then a few more on 28th and 29th.  So chances are good for me to buy.  It's the selling with all the rain that has slowed WAY down.
