Suggestion Center / Re: Would you pay $40 for a padlock?
« on: May 10, 2014, 10:12:53 AM »
Agree that most of the break ins occur by cutting the sliding mechanism rather than the lock itself.

On the flip side when we are walking through a facility and I see a giant lock or a lock that looks heavy duty I always say .. "I wonder whats in there??"

If I was a thief I would specifically target that locker.

Tom sold his company to Freemantle and is getting $3m+ a year in salary, on top of what he made off the sale of the company.  Since then other people have taken over the reigns which is why Storage Wars NY tanked ... producers over there didn't take advice of casting co, brandi and jarrod, ..etc.

And he makes extra for his voiceover work ... and his wife works for the company so she makes some cash too.

Hes a very smart guy ... the people that took over are not.

at the end of the day its all just something to have on in the background while I list my junk on ebay

they are winding down the franchise and figured they would give them a shot at a pilot.  It didn't get picked up as a spin off but they spent the money on it so they aired it.  It's a one and done.

The next spin off in the works is Candy and Courtney as Storage Wars NY has officially not been picked back up.  It will not be great.

It's a picture of Barry Weiss shown on one of the episodes

They were the $20 tubs so I actually just ended up keeping them for the warehouse.  When that closes down I'll resell at $10 a pop.  With use and $500 buy out in the end it will be worth it but it was a tough day explaining that purchase to the wife.

186
I bought a unit with 50 beautiful tubs with lids all lined up, nothing else in the room.  figured each one could be worth about 20-30 depending on contents inside and went up to 600.  Every box was empty.

I felt bad once ... the room was filled with boxes of childrens artwork spanning a decade, their photo albums, keepsakes ..etc.  I asked the facility manager for their information to send it back and they wouldn't give it to me .. privacy and all. I told them I would just leave it all in the room because it was too much for the office and they said no.. it all goes we don't have the space.

I looked their name up but their number wasn't working.  I went through the entire room looking for something and I finally found an address book and called one of their friends who gave me their new number.

The woman basically told me "throw it out they're growns now anyway"  I asked again and she said stop harassing me or I'll call the cops.  I hung up and threw it out.

That was the first and last time I'll go out of my way other than leaving the personal stuff at the office.

there are going to be "vultures" in almost any type of occupation.  Banker forecloses on houses, farmer uses pesticides and GMOs and get a bigger harvest, executives make too much ...etc.

Your mother had the opportunity to get certain things out before it went to auction.  The second you are sweating coming up with the fee get your but their and get some of it out.  Then let it go to auction.  If she didn't have room she could have taken out the keepsakes and gotten the smaller locker they have which wouldn't have gone over the 100 a month that she could afford.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Risky Business
« on: April 18, 2014, 07:49:05 PM »
Most auctioneers are shady to some point ...in the ny market anyway.

There is one guy that brings his "cousin" and wouldn't you know it .. he always win the best bin of the day.

For all of us there is a real slow count but when he has the bid its 1.2.3. sold.

Everyone has complained but the mom and pops don't care as long as he draws a crowd, sells the room and get it emptied in 24 hours.

You mean she doesn't really work at a pawn shop ... and is actually a brazilian supermodel?? what??

I can't believe storage auction shows hire actresses to cast the show.  mind. blown. :-\

that guy is the worst.  very offputting

What I know that has happened at an extra space is that a tenant whose room was going up for auction broke in the night before, cut his lock and removed all of his stuff .. he didn't want them to know it was him so he cut another 20 locks to mask that he was only after his stuff.

Unfortunately for him he tried to use his gate code, and of course it got rejected, but it also got saved on the facilities computer.

He was charged with trespassing and 20 different counts of breaking and entering :-[

Public storage actually has more strict lien rules than the states lien laws.

PS as of 12/13 changed their auction proceedings to 60 days past due.  If she last paid on January 7 and she didn't pay from 1/7 - 2/7 and then from 2/7 - 3/7 she hit that mark and at the next auction her items would have been sold.

PS Orange has been sued on several occasions for improperly sending units to auction so they are very careful at this point.

In Long Island an entire run was cancelled ... 12 facilities and about 50 rooms ... because one name was misspelled.  They would rather eat the cost to rerun the ads and give the other tenants an additional 30 days to pay then risk getting sued.

In that period of the 60+ days they send several certified letters and call non stop to get you to pay.

Its cheaper for them to make a deal with you then deal with all of the nonsense that goes with sending a room to auction.

Its of course very sad for her and her family but the article says she has money, she knew her card was cancelled and knew she didn't receive a bill for 2 months.

Its on her.

If the landlord came into your house and left the front door open and you got robbed its his fault.  If he hired a locksmith, movers, painters ...etc. to make repairs to the house and they broke in its his fault ...etc.

So it depends on how the unit was broken into irregardless of whether you had insurance or not, it was offered or not.  If the gate was broken, the cameras down ..etc. the security and piece of mind that you pay monthly for was not present and they are liable.

Simply by asking these questions the landlord/facility manager will usually recognize they are wrong and will offer a buy out.

There is an Uncle Bobs in Bayshore, NY that had 70 units robbed in one night.  The gate was left open and the cameras in that row were turned off.  Obviously an inside job but no one was fired and no police reports were filed.

Insurance wasn't required at this facility so many people didn't have it.  Uncle Bobs basically knew they would get decimated in the press and that would cost them far more in future rentals than a payout so they had each owner write out a content list and submitted it to their insurance for payout.  In the end the tenants won and the facility saved face.

195
No but if you take out the monthly insurance from the facility .. mandatory in most places nowadays when you rent they will pay out, otherwise your homeowners/tenants insurance will pay out but most have a policy provision that states the contents must be in there for 30 days or less to be covered.

However, if you have neither and tell the facility you are going to go on fb, twitter ..etc. and tell people that their facility is not safe they will usually do a quiet buy out.
