Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Update on auction caravan #1

Car parts sell well in my area.  Specially the performance parts, or the common parts from specific models.  We have 4 dirt tracks, a drag strip, and a few other race tracks in a 100 mile radius.  So cheap parts are always in demand.

We had a dozen car units go up for auction last month.  Even the 10x20 unit with 50+ used tires, 2 hoist, and a few other items sold for $1200.  The ones with mostly engine blocks, etc. sold north of 3k.

Ya - I'm finding a few of these places have just gotten greedy over the last year.  So they will be in a shock I suspect in another year or two if prices / crowds keep coming down.

The unit I got rejected on with a $50 starter in June I really thought he wasn't going to sell.  He kept asking for $100 for a good 2 mins or so before a newbie bid.  Sold it for the $100 and rest of us just shook our heads.  I think part of it was he was pissed at me and a few of the other regulars.  Earlier that morning I opened up with a $20 bid on a 10x10 that had a few furniture items but wasn't anything great.  Other regular said $30 and I let him have it since was mostly so/so furniture and a king size matress.  The guy sold the matress to a newbie for $50, a small table and 2 chairs for $30, etc.  All before paying for the unit and in front of the auctioneer.  Myself - I was like dumbass don't do that but it happened.  Ever since then this guy has been anal.  Myself - I bout fell out when the newbie offered $50 for the matress.  This guy I suspect will combine several of the smaller units that don't sell into a unit special that they don't tell you about.  It's always just an "owner abandoned" unit.

Just recently thursday at a silent bid we didn't know if they were going to take the bids or not.  In fact one newbie at the 2nd facility won 4 units.  She only had the money to pay for 1 that she bid on.  The facility asked one of the regulars if they wanted to pay the ladies bids and buy the units.  They passed - prices were way high/over what was even owed.

That is just an "ouch".  Least in GA they don't pull the rifles and stuff.  Not sure if they should and just don't.  I know an auction this month had a rifle showing and they didn't pull it.  However, 3 months ago a large gun safe was pulled from auction by the facility.  That caused a big stink as we were told the local sheriff was going to pick up the safe.  Found out it was sold to the ladies husband or something.

Of the 6 rifle butts that I have seen in the last few months, 5 of them have been pellet / air soft rifles.  The real rifle this past month was missing the bolt, so is useless till it's replaced.  All of the rifle butts have also been up front near the door in easy sight.  Plants maybe???

We still have many no sales, $1 and $5 units, along with the $500+ units.  Then again I've yet to be at an auction with a min bid.  Now my one 7 facility location is starting to get a little greedy.  A few times now he has "rejected" $50 opening bids on small units that before would go for $300 or more.  Granted it normally goes for $150 or so and the $50 is just to get things rolling.  So I don't know if this guy don't want to waste time, trying to get more money, or what.

Lol Movieman - I know what you mean.  Turned on the TV one night when wife was out and I got the remote for a change.  TruTV was last place she watched a show.  So I watched 5 or 10 mins of it and was like oh man.  If people acted like that at storage auctions the facilities would have to hire security, cancel auctions, or something.  Just shook my head and kept on surfing.

Well I know one of the newbies in my area uses the site.  I had to not laugh and roll my eyes friday at her.  She uses that site and a pay site to find auctions.  Then compalined about not knowing of some of the other auctions people have attended.  Of course if she keeps paying what she does for units it will not matter.  She will fade away like so many of the other newbies in the last year.

Jester - is this a small town or rural storage area?  In the city everything is fenced, wired, etc.  In the small towns around me a large facility has 20 units, most with only 6-12 units.  Can be worth making the trip just to get the number even if they cancel.  As movieman said find some flea / yard sales on the way since it's a saturday.  Is what I do many times.

Of late those yard sales are better buys then any storage unit unless you get one of the 1 out of 100 great units.

Good recount of the day Jesterc - thanks.  As for pulling the trigger on larger units it could be a mental block.  I'm not shy about bidding on large units, crap units, or anythign in between.  However, I have found myself at times stalling and sputtering on anything over $300.  I have figured out for myself it's a 2 part thing.  First - I bid and lost my tail on a $875 silent bid last year that I spent 2 months recovering from.  Second  for myself gambling $50 - $150 on a unit depending on what I see is easy.  I've bid up to $170-$180 many times and won/loss.  But once I hit $200 subconciously I'm thinking of other things to do with that money I suspect.  I've bid and won on a few $200 - $250 units but those were ones I knew would make money and I really wanted.  I've bid and lost on a few $300 units that sold at the $500-$750 range.  You may be the same.

Also - it's easier to recover $50 - $100 from a unit then $1000.  Look at your market, ability to sale, etc.  Now that I have a thrift store I can sell at I'm more inclined to buy furniture units that I would stay away from previously.

Well my thursday/friday caravan has come and gone.  The crowds were pretty low compared to a few months ago.  Was only 8 or 10 of us at the first facility that had 24 units (silent bid).  Take a guess how long it took us to look at 24 units..............40 mins.  We finished up in time for me to hit the first facility of the 2nd caravan that had 3 units.  Then I hit the 2nd facility of the silent bid auction instead of going to my other option.  19 units vs 2 unts...and facility guy said they were crap.

Ended up not winning a thing.  I lowballed a bunch of units on the silent.  Nothing really caught my eye except for one of the large hold/bids (hold till 8/3).  One interesting point - we all thought all of the bids were going to be rejected.  Normally only takes 1hr before they call the winners.  2+ hrs later we are at the sister facility about to start and no one had gotten a call.  So one of the regulars called the 1st location.  Was told she was still trying to contact the owner as the bids were "LOW" and she didn't know if he would accept them.  I just had to laugh.  I'm like - they have gotten greedy and use to all the newbies overpaying for units.  They finally called some 4 hrs later I was told.

Now - the other 2 facility caravan that was live use to not care how much units sold for.  Point in fact - only 1 person showed up at the 2nd location with 2 units...what I expected.  The regional manager said just give him $5 for each unit and they are his.  This place you can also take what you want and leave the trash.  The city will pick the trahs up out of the units.  Was sad to learn the place has been bought out by CubeSmart and the regional guy is being layed off.  He was always fun to work with.  Will see how Sept sales go.

So overall crowds have fallen in my area.  Unit quantity is still low as people are paying up.  Only reason we had 24 out of 27 units is the place only does it every 6 months.  Quality of the units have been low also.

Very nice teacher.  I've learned also to start to use odd cents.  I've lost an auction last month by $.30.  Sounds like a really nice unit you snagged.  Have fun sorting.

I've yet to get to a piece auction.  Most places here just do the whole storage unit.  Sounds like some good buys Movieman.
I have to make a decision on which auction to hit thursday.  I took the day off to take my daughter to some last auctions before school starts.  We have two 2-facility caravans on Thursday.  The first location is at 9am a dozen+ units and is silent bid, followed by another dozen units at 11am on other side of town.  Or I can hit a 10am auction with 6 units listed that is followed by 11am in my little town.  The smaller facility I've done ok at, they just want units cleaned so don't care how low price, and normal only 8-10 of us.

Strategy is going to be calling both places around 4 wednesday.  See which one has more units.  If second facility has all 6 units I may try the 9am first and then turn in my bid sheet at 9:45 and shoot up the road to the 10am.  I love when have so many choices.

Just checked - is 27 units and 15.  One has "Bike, Canoe" for listing.  Now that draws my interest.....

Rockin my friend please feel free to brag away.  Is good to hear when people make it big or even a decent victory.

Only thing I would like is some of your luck.  Around here I'm not bleeding money but I'm not really making much either.  Like the trend all over most of the units up for auction now just suck.  Add that to the lower sells like others and things are slow.  I have done more yard sales then auctions of late.  For my area the trend will change in another few weeks I think.  Kids go back to school mid-Aug.  So we expect the noobies to come out in force again at the auctions.

Not sure about other area's but from what I hear Sunday has turned into a better selling day then Saturday.

I'm sort of surprised the had the auction.  Most places in my area want 3 or 4 people.  Sounds like some decent units.  What is "owed" and what a unit is worth can be vastly different.  Glad you are doing well.

That sucks Movieman about not winning anything.  Think I'd of had to bid on the all bag locker.  Is a gamble but I've done better then expected with those bags.

I have to agree with you on picking.  My buddy that has a store summed it up this way.  He makes his money on the yard sale and "come to him" purchases for the majority of furniture, etc.  The units provide the random smalls and flavors to his inventory.

Monday found my daughter and I at her favorite location since she can bid (with my approval of course).  Unlike last month only a few lockers at each place this time.  First facility 4 units - nothing great, crowd is about normal for this place with a bunch of new faces and some older newbies/regular returning after a hiatus.

Second facility we picked up a few more people.  8 units here which was a surprise.  One nice construction looking unit with a .22 rifle but showing.  Unit only went for $475 to a newbie which surprised me some.

Third facility got rained out.  Wasn't so much the driving rain and wind as much as the lightning going off everywhere.  So we go back today at 4:30.

I did win a small 5x10 which surprised me.  Did an opening bid while people were looking of $50.  I figured it would go for $100 - $150.  1/2 full, 6 or 7 decent chairs, table, a number of odds and ends.  Think the 3 prostetic legs is all people saw.  Sold unit untouched to my buddy for $75 as he needs inventory for his store.
