Picker's Paradise / Re: Estate Sales
« on: July 15, 2012, 08:54:24 PM »
Oh that is pretty cool Alias.  I keep hitting estate sales but by time I get off work they are picked clean.  Did get a old 1970s era station wagon jack for like $5 a few months ago.  Last few sales for me have just been $.50 CDs to add to my collection.

Yard sales have still been good to me however.

Have some auction houses doing absolute auctions next saturday.  So not sure what want to hit (storage auction, auction house, yard sale)....

I've not had any big WoW factors of late really.  Still making some money on a $100 silent bid unit I had seen some computer parts in.  Turned out to be boxes of baseball, football, comic, pokemon, etc.  Made money back off 3 things and rest is profit.  Did just find a 73 topps Willie Mays card and Willie Mays action card.  Would be worth about $60 if in NM.  Thinking of getting them graded.

Daughter has done the best - money back just in change from a unit.  Two bikes sold for $40 (profit), a PSP 1000 and 3000 - kept both, and what looks like a 10k gold and diamond bracelet.  All out of a $25 locker.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Kids at Auctions
« on: July 15, 2012, 08:38:14 PM »
Think myself and my daughter are one of the people Movieman was talking about.  As we have one facility (he is the owner) that will accept her bids.  Of course the contract is in my name, etc.  She will be 14 thursday and I'm sure will read this post monday...yes - she reads the boards.

Outside of my daughter we have normally only 2 semi-regulars that have young kids.  They don't act up, get in the way, etc.  So for the most part any kids at the auctions in my area are fine.  We have had a few newbies bring screaming toddlers, the rat pack, etc.  Those days it can be very trying at times.  With the lower crowds of late most people are not as pushy/bad mood, even with the 100+ degree heat as they were last year.

FYI - the one auction that takes my daughters bids also has his son there helping many times.  So in a way it's a bit more kid friendly then other auctions may be why he does it.  For myself I get to spend time with her and teach her buying / selling.  Granted if she keeps buying the winning lockers I'll retire and let her do all the work.

The caravan has come and gone and finds me with 2 units for $155 total.  Crowd started out around 30 people or so - down a few people from last month but still a number of newbies.  By the time we finish for the day the crowd was down to a dozen and lost all but 1 set of newbies.  Units today were so/so with a few good units.  Prices were more reasonable with the biggest / best going for 600, 800, and 900.  I got a 1/4 full 10x10 for $110.  Had it at $50 till one of the newbie's jumped in.  Two large dog cages, drop leaf table, some firewood furniture, and a few other odds and end items.  Figure the drop leaf, and 2 dog cages should net me $150 or so.  If do that is $40 profit before some of the other items.  I really wanted the unit for the dog cages as may keep them for self.

Second unit was at the last facility of the day.  It was rare this place never has units.  Maybe 1 unit in 3 months.  Today they had 6 (3 abandoned units and 3 advertised).  Lady at the counter said first unit was marginal so I was thinking cloths and stuff.  Get there and it's another 10x10.  4 drawer file cabinet, large dolly, large piano/furniture dolly, 5 trash bags, xmas tree box, xmas tree, etc.  Saw 2 move blankets in a corner.  Tossed out a $25 open, one of the other regulars $35, so I went to $45 and won.  Is a good unit for price.  The trash bags - 4 of them had moving blankets folded up inside.  One bag of cloths.  Tubs had various items in it but a number of new cell phones (older).  Guy was a sales rep for Verizon.  Even have a huge canvas picture/advertisement sign of the verizon guy.

So all in all a decent day.  Can't wait for monday now.

Craigslist / Re: Are CL buyers really nuts or what?

Anything "metal" has value.  It all depends if you are also a scrapper or not.  The magnet can be used to quickly determine if the metal is ferrous or non-ferrous.  You also use the magnet to quickly determine if that gold necklace is really gold or fake.

Some people buy and use acid test to verify the gold is real or not.  Myself - I take all of my stuff to a store that I trust (dealt with for years).

Also - ebay is good but doesn't cover everything.  It also depends on how you search, time frame, etc.  You just have to learn to do research research research.  Ebay, google, local library, etc.  You start to learn a little bit about all sorts of things once you do this for a bit.

Well caravan time for me in the morning...if we have any units.  Last 4 months have seen less then a dozen units between 7 locations.  This is the auction that is telling for me also on crowds.  We have been getting lots of out of towners and newbies.  If we are under 30 people I will be very happy.

Monday is my 3 caravan location that my daughter loves.  She made out like a bandit last month.  So hopefully we will get another unit or three in the next few days.

If the guy graded them like that I would get the slabbed and sell them on ebay.  Would bring more cash that way.

Heck - even with the comics, trading cards, etc. stuff in the toilet with this economy I still look for that stuff in units.  I'm even may go in half's with my thrift store buddy on a lot of comics one of his customers brought in.  For the price we offered we can make money now but may just hold onto them for a year or two.

Well that would be easy to do Cobia.  I have 5 title pawn places in a 2 block area in many parts of my town.

Garage Sales / Re: Little traffic, but those that showed.....bought~
« on: July 09, 2012, 06:57:12 PM »
Ok Movieman - you piked my interest so I had to go check my excel sheets.  I started to keep track of my sales (what and how much) to do some trending.  Not much for stats but I have had the following avg per sale at the flea:
2.54
4.46
4.19
2.84
3.52
6.49
2.55
6.77
4.78

avg total: 4.24 per sale

At the yard sale I did 10.03 per sale avg.

I only deal with smalls at the flea / yard.  All my big items are sold via CL, ebay, or thrift store.  So I'm sure many people will go "dang that is low" but it works for me.  Keeps my cash flow going and inventory going to the door.

Garage Sales / Re: Are Yard Sale Customers Really That Crazy?
« on: July 09, 2012, 06:43:17 PM »
Lol money - I've learned it never hurts to ask.  If I'm really interested in something I'll work up.  Most times it's items for the store and we have set prices.  So offer and then leave with item or not.  Bunch of sales this time of year.  Most times I don't even get out of my local area before noon hits and people pack it up.

I have if can find it this electric lightning ball buddah.  I used it a number of times at the flea with a $50 price tag.  It's not really worth that much but it draws in people like flys.  1 in 4 will then see something they want and buy.  Before I had it people would do the quick glance as walk by.  I use my US/World coins now to draw people in.  Make more sells but not as many comments as the buddah....really need to find where I hid that thing.

Great stories teacher.  I didn't have any real ones from my first and only yard sale so far.  Did have this teenage kid ask if I needed help to move stuff.  Was moving from the sun to shade.  His mother spent about 20 mins in the thrift store shopping.  He hung out with me and I was telling him about the world coins and stuff I had for sale.  Told him to pick out 8 world coins from the bucket I had.  He thought it was cool, was going to show his friend who collects coins, and I got some free help.  I was just shocked he offered to help.  Most teenage kids I know this day (exept for a few) tend to be lazy and ask what is in it for them first.

Yep, Cobia - those people are out there.  I've had people offer to buy 10 $2 bills for $15.  Um - sure let me pay you $5 to take this stuff off my hands.

Now, at yard sales I'll try and get a good deal.  I will lowball something if I think I can get it.  Or if I'm buying for the thrift store.  We roughly pay 1/2 of what we think can get back.  I get told NO at times, Yes a number of times, and a few times will haggle.

Case in point this past saturday - guy had 4 nice wood chairs at $20 each or all 4 for $60.  Now, that is what my buddy can get at his store, around $15-20.  I told her up front I may be interested in them for the store but I don't think he would go for the price.  While I waited for a response I checked out the yard sale right next door (love twofores).  Buddy came back with $30, she asked her hubby who said $40.  Now, she had also told me about a 5th chair out back and went to get it for me to see.  While waiting hubby mention that a) they not sold anything yet that morning  b) they had a sale last weekend  c) really didn't want to put this stuff back.  So I offered $35 for all 5 chairs and they took it.  Didn't have change so I tried to get a little tikes picnic table and a dora trike for the $5.  He said $10 so I settled on the picnic table...which sold less then an hour after I delivered it for $12.99.

Different yard sale had a tent (no instructions, pita) for $5.  Had a 10 yr old 5hp shop vac and a newer 1.5hp shop vac for $20.  Had a pair of ok bar stools for $15 or $20.  Now stools go for 7-10 bucks, not had any vac's to sell and tent was iffy.  Offered $30 for it all.  He said NO so I walked away and headed to the next sale which was above.

Some of these people just want stuff gone...specially late in the day.  I've picked up whole boxes of random stuff for $5 many a times.  It's like a small version of a storage unit.  I rummage real quick - see 5-10 bucks worth of stuff and offer $5 for the box.

You just have to roll with the times and adapt.  Make connections to help you get the items you need.

Myself - I've teamed up with another auction person that we have become friends.  He has mostly stopped coming to the auctions as he opened a store and does well there.  He has people that call him / bring him stuff to look over and buy.  Myself, I take furniture/other stuff to him to sell 50/50.  He gives me oddball or other items to sale on ebay with 50/50 split after fees.  We both come out winning the majority of the time.

I hit up yard sales if I'm not at the flea on saturday.  I buy stuff for the store in my area.  He shops the sales in his.  We call/text back and forth a bunch on different deals.  So for example I picked up a little tikes picnic table for $5.  We washed it up and it sold not an hour after dropping it off at the store for $12.99.

We try to double profits.  However, if we can make only 25% profit we are ok with that also.  Have flipped stuff just from contacts a few times.  Example: guy has fridge for sale and wanted $100.  Next day a couple comes in wanting a fridge.  Was able to call seller and buying it right then for $100, loading it up and selling it to couple for $170.  Total time invested was 30 mins of work and 4 miles round trip.

Lol - don't you love when that happens.  I've tought my daughter to search everything before tossing stuff in trash.  One of her last units she purchased had a cloths hamper in front for all to see.  Looked like they tossed the contents under the bathroom sink in it.  She wanted to toss the whole thing.  After I reminder her to look she found a 10k gold/diamond bracelet.  Still need to have it tested but by my home testing it's all real.
