Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #7...July, 2012
« on: July 07, 2012, 08:56:17 PM »
Went to U-haul friday.  I had to hussel as my boss ran the meeting over late and thus was late getting there.  Only 5 units up for auction which is low for them.  Missed the first unit.  Second unit had 6 boxes in it.  3 of them were the tall U-haul boxes to hold cloths.  I passed - unit sold for $180 or more to some new lady.  Think she was surprised when found a empty box, cloths in the other, etc.  I tried hard not to laugh.  3rd unit was best - packed room with some decent furniture showing, no mattress could see, totes, bins, etc.  It sold for $400 which was WAY to high.  Wasn't that big of a room.  Again to one of the newbies.  4th was mostly cloths in bags, upstiars (have to use a movable ladder to get to it).  Only thing I was interested in was the camo style bag.  After $100 and going I lost interest.  Last unit had 2 suitcases, trashbag, and some cloths hanging.  I opened at $10 and stayed in till $45.  One of the newer regulars bought it at $50.  I may of gotten it at $55 but unless some decent cloths in the suitcase I would of lost $25.  I hate cloths right now.

Crowd was smaller then past few months.  However, was mostly newbies/ 3mo newbies compared to regulars.  Even the local whale was missing.

I had all of my cloths for $.50 each at the yard sale.  I sold about $10 worth.  I had jeans, shorts, leather skirts, etc.  Only thing that sold were the shorts and a few shirts.

I pulled out all the shorts and took a full truck load of cloths in boxes/totes to Goodwill.  Just tired of them.

Garage Sales / Re: Rummage sale pricing<question>

I myself tag most things.  However, I also have specific prices on cards/boxes that I lay out.  So I have a index card saying "Movies / CDs are $2 unless marked", a box of ".25 items" and one for ".50 items".  Everything else gets a sticker.

We can't sell food at our flea.  The flea has concession stands so they don't want competetion.

Gratz Cobia on the 500.  Now to hit 1000 and up.  Don't think any of us will catch MovieMan...unless we start posting lots of nonsense and spam threads ;)

Garage Sales / Re: My first sort of yard sale.

Lol money - I done told her I may either have to start bidding against her or I'll just hand over my wallet and let her spend my money.......like she don't already.

If she keeps this up I'm going to start charging her for gas, dump fees, and selling fees.  Her reply was "well you were already here/doing that".

I love the thrift.  Can sell some of the furniture that I get.  I don't go out of my way to get furniture but at least now I have an outlet that I can trust.

Glad to hear you can start doing it again yourself.  Location is everything.

Garage Sales / My first sort of yard sale.
« on: July 01, 2012, 02:42:07 PM »
I purchased 3 units and my daughter 2 in the month of June.  So I was a very inventory rich person when I added all of the units to our yard sales picking.  So I decided on monday I'd try and sell this weekend as most people in our area were getting paid friday the 29th.  However, like many others we saw record temps friday with forcast of even hotter temps Saturday.  So I debated about going to the flea or not.  Instead, I took a page out of our regular posters here.  My friend has a thrift store that I've helped out at, sold a few things to/thru, etc.  I asked them if they would mind me setting up Saturday as a yard sale in the corner of the parking area.  She said sure - so I gave them $15 and wrote up a contract to cover them in case the tax man came around.  Wanted to make it clear there was a distenction between the store / my stuff.  Figure if there was no customers or just very slow I could duck into the store to cool off.  No AC really but they have a portable unit that works great.  As it turns out I and the store were very busy.  I have many items the store didn't and even brought in people who had not stopped at the store before.  My only advertisement was a CL post at 8 or so friday night.  After expenses I made $390, daughter $51, and then another $40 in shared sales w/ the store (my items they sell and we split 50/50).  So it was a great if extremely hot day.

If they go for it again I may just pick one weekend a month and sell at the thrift of Saturday and flea on Sunday.  I made a bunch more at the thrift.  Don't know if it was just the certain items I had or what.  I do know some of it was due to less competetion.  Even sold many items that had not sold at the flea.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Bought my First locker the other day
« on: July 01, 2012, 01:54:21 PM »
You took a gamble and won - that is great.  Buying lockers all depends on what you want to do.  As you have read from the other three it can be your primary job, a way to "upgrade", or an adventure.  I myself do it as a hobby and to spend time with my oldest daughter.  I also have purchased a number of very cheap units that people laugh at me.  Last one was a 10x10 size unit with some trash and a old fridge in it.  I paid $5.  Since I had already purchased another unit at this location, have a trailer, and a appliance dolly the fridge to me was $15-20 in scrap even if not working.  Now I would not have purchased the unit if it was the only unit I was getting at the location.  Coming back to the location with trailer, clean-out, etc. just wasn't worth my time/effort.

Recently - I can make more money buying/picking yard sale items and re-selling at my buddies thrift store / ebay then I do on a average locker purchase.  My daughter however, is making a killing (2-3x money) on under $50 units she has purchased.

For me as long as I can break even +/- $20 on a unit I'm happy.  Most people think I'm nuts.  I like to rummage / dig / explore in stuff for that mystery.  I also use all of this to teach my kids.  My oldest has gone from just attending the auctions, to helping at some auctions, and being able to bid at one facility herself.  She even scared off a newbie on her 2nd locker purchase and struck gold...litteraly (jealous daddy....)

I've noticed not as many new registrations/newbie style post.  I know I've slowed down some just due to R/L work and the auction stuff.  Can surf the forums like I use to be able to at work as much now :(

We will see what July brings.

Rofl Alias - that just made me laugh.  Honestly Will you are setting yourself up for hurt doing a CL ad.  I get scammers all the time emailing me when I'm selling stuff local.  Your best bet is going to be either get the stuff yourself or just "abandon" the unit and let the facility sell it.  You get what ever extra the unit sells for over what you owe on the unit.  There is some risk in that the items will not sell for much money...it is an auction.  However, if instrument cases, speakers, etc. are showing you can expect a bunch of interest and bids with a mid size crowd.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #6...June, 2012

Sounds like a great week for all to end June with.  I myself skipped the auctions friday as I had already purchased 2 units in 10 days and daughter had gotten 2.  So we were on inventory overload and low funds.

Wish we had an auction like MovieMan - electronics can sometimes be very easy and cheap to fix.
Very nice buy PureVendue - that would never go here.  Too many guys love furniture and have "other" people to clean the units out.  So they are not scared away by weight, quantity, etc.

I'm with you rockin on the temp.  Is quarter till 8pm here and still temp is at 104, heat index is like 110 or higher.  Have another 3 days of 100+ temps then we will just be in the high 90s.  Was surprised I did so well today in sells with the heat.

As for crowds - they are mid-size to more normal.  We expected this come July in my area.  Most people don't want to be out in the heat and stuff.  Still will see a few newbies I'm sure baking their kids butts in strollers.

Are you talking about the Atlanta auction list?  If so just send a email or PM Drew.

You should get an email I think every week with the auction listings that are about to come up.  I used the list only once when I was going to be in Atlanta.

I donate 95% of the cloths that I get in units to Goodwill.  A few cloths that I keep for myself/kids.  Jeans and shorts I attempt to sell at the flea.  If they don't sell after a few tries they go to Goodwill also.

Dang it - how did I miss this post.  Sorry Movieman I got busy w/ RL and didn't check for old post.

You have someone a super deal.  You had about $15 worth of dimes in G-4 condition.  Silver value about $2 per dime.  I'd of bought those for the $5.  Oh well - teach me to check forums more often.

LOL Movieman - I'm starting to think you do have too much time on your hands ;)

Or you do like me and have a number of so/so or blah jobs that you need to do but keep putting off.
