Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: I may have made a BIG boo-boo.....

RE: if they can make money too...fine with me.

Yes, that theory works fine and I do that ONCE IN A WHILE, but at the flea I am in the business of selling to the end user for the most part.

In other words I pretty much know the value of what I have for sale and want to make the most I can. If I have an item I know would go for $30 on eBay I will try to sell it for $20 to $30 at the flea also.  The biggest eBay seller I know (15,000 plus feedback) doesn't even shop my booth as he knows I too buy cheap from unknowing sellers looking for a 2 to 10 times return on my investment.

I have a set (7 DVDS) boxed of Japanese animation and when I told a fellow $30 the other day his comment was "You know what you've got...a lot of people don't".  Ordinary DVDs go for $3.  When one fellow said "Is that the price for all of them?" He had a thick box of 6 dvds (a series set) in his hand. CLOWN. Give me a break...even the dumbest minority group seller at my flea is smarter than that.

On DVDs: several years ago I bought 600 or so DVDs from a mom and pop store that went out of biz. I think I paid $1k for them.  At that time I was getting $6 a DVD...of course the best ones went first. By the time I was down to about 200 discs I was selling them at $4 and still getting it. Now when I get 50 or so good ones in a lkr I go through and get the ones I want first and then everything goes at $3 for singles and $10 to $12 for sets of 4 or more. Some people when they hear $3 just walk off...I know times are tough, but if you want a virtually new DVD in the box for less than $3, you have some looking to do. You can't even RENT a dvd for $3 (in a brick and mortar store) let alone OWN it, and if you go to Blockbuster or Red Box Kiosk you have made two trips to the store.

Also, when someone tries to get me down on $3 for a kids DVD I have to educate them (not that they don't already know) that a child will play a DVD so many times that the cost per viewing would be about 25 cents per viewing...that's cheap babysitting.

We shook hands and he left.  I was feeling dejected.  5 minutes later he returned and said "for $200 I can't go wrong." handed me 2 hundred dollar bills and loaded the rocks.  He picked out a couple pieces to give to my daughters and begged us to come see him at his booth in February.

Yep, rock/minerals .... you have to know what you've got.  I sell customer friendly amethyst, citrine and geodes at the flea spring through summer. I have bought at Quartzite and enjoy that whole atmosphere and the desert. I collect geodes in the ground at Hauser Geode Beds near Blythe, CA.

One of my big sellers are open geodes from Morroco, North Africa. Do a search on eBay and you will see some examples.

Edit: saving readers the trouble of searching eBay. Here's a link. Though I would get $25 for a two-half set at the flea.

You did well at $200 I think (don't know quantity or types) but if he gave you that you can bet he will double or triple on his sales.

Yikes !  Need to get this dang thing fixed.

I just posted a long note and forgot to copy it before posting it. Got the time out message. Just exited and came back in (did not refresh). Post is not showing up (though before it has when I did this).

Until we get notice that this is fixed I guess we have to copy (and later paste) any post we do otherwise it's just wasted typing.

so when is this message coming up? I havent seen it

It comes up for me when I am trying to post. Then I can either "retry" or quit out altogether and when I come back in I am still signed in. ALSO, when that happens, the post did take place !

Also, I just tried (twice) to send a PM to a member and it kicked me out both times and the message did not get sent.

NEED A REPAIR !

I'm an ebay Top rated Power Seller, so sells there isn't an issue. It's the other venues that worry me.

I'm an eBay Top Rated Power Seller too and one of the ways I get my items is storage units (over 350 lks in 8 years).

I also buy at flea markets, estate sales and yard sales.

I sell every Saturday at a flea market....collectibles, electronics, tools, musical instruments....but not very much ordinary household stuff unless it's in a box and new (toasters, etc).

But to answer your basic question, THIS DOESN'T SOUND LIKE IT'S FOR YOU !

Ok have to ask. Has anyone given gifts from your inventory for Christmas?

Duh !

Merry Christmas everyone !

Tuesday, Dec 20, 2011...

OK, I don't have the energy to give an accounting of this one....it will be poorly acted and unbelieveable though....you can count on that.

I do want to rewind the tivo though...these clowns each have "monikers" now:

They are:

The Rangers, The Outsider, The Boss and The Doc...I'll let you guess who is who if you didn't watch it.

*****

OK, that's it.....One of the Smiths comments about a picture:

"JC and the boys"...I'm sure Leonardo DaVinci is turning over in his grave at this description of the Last Supper !

AND....

"lookee here what I done found"...thrown the "twang" on top of that and what have you got....a Californian's worst nightmare....a hick on tv buying a storage locker.

When I post it says "Your Request Has Timed Out".Say I have to back and press post again.

Yes, you, I and 2000 other members .... no wait....1,950 of them don't post so it may not apply to them.  ???

Nabila is back !

Barry brings a drone with camera for flying inside a locker !

Barry flies his drone inside...Dotson...shuts him down...says Barry can't bid...and Darrell wins it for $7K.

*****

Brandi...could you shorten that skirt up just a bit...I know some guys here would bid on those butt cheeks.  ;D

The pair got a compoud bow, bronze (?) bear, lots of other goodies....they paid $3400 for the lkr.

Two of the bows need help....last one belonged to U.S. Archery Team.....for all three...expert says $750 for all three.

******

Barry likes the bowed glass cabinet....his and hers barbecues...the humor is wearing thin.  Predict he breaks the curved glass !

Barry takes costume jewelry to appraiser...lkr cost $1650...stuff is worth....$3675.

*****

Darrell paid $7K for a construction lkr...figures it's worth $25K.

Now on to TEXAS !

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: how do u find out info on owners
« on: December 20, 2011, 08:46:54 AM »
Of units prior to the auction?

Here's another short thread on this topic.

http://storageauctionforums.com/index.php?topic=606.0

Better yet, just go to the SEARCH button above and type in "research locker owners"

...that will bring up half a dozen or so threads on this topic.

Gotta LOVE THE SEARCH BUTTON !

One thing when you expect a small crow it will be large.  ( I went to a Wednesday one 85 bidders about 250 people )

I hate it when those big crows show up!

The Lounge / Re: Buying Magic: The Gathering cards
« on: December 18, 2011, 06:41:02 PM »
In eight years and having bought over 350 lockers, I have found 100 Magic cards (in one locker) and that was about 4 years ago. But I'll start looking harder !  ;)

What if the owner came in and payed his bill and his lock did not work anymore ?

1) If they are behind in their rent they get called by the prop mgr.
2) This might happen a couple of times.
3) If they have not paid for a couple of months they are going to get a registered letter telling them their locker is in   lein.

4) During this time period the lock is usually cut, a picture is taken from outside, a prop mgr lock and seal are put on.
Sometimes they hold off cutting the lock till the day of the sale...it varies.

5) During the time the lkr has the prop mgr lock on it a number of things can happen...to wit:

 a) The lkr comes up for sale and is sold if not paid up by auction time.
 b) The lkr should be sold (but isn't) and prop mgr now has a bunch of stuff in a lkr and he can do with it
what he wants as he has run the legal notice, sent registered mail, etc.
An unscrupulous prop mgr would take good stuff out for himself and then the NEXT TIME a sale came up
he would sell this lkr with what is left (poor to middlin' crap.

There are lots of ways the system can be "rigged". Prop mgrs and auctioneers who are "iffy" can maniupulate the system. Not terribly common, but it happens. Over time you learn who can be trusted.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Young Children at Auctions
« on: December 16, 2011, 11:23:32 PM »
I've heard an auctioneer say the reason for the no smoking rule is because they don't know what's in the unit when the door goes up. There could be something highly flammable in there.

Not to mention the prop mgrs just don't want to sweep up the butts at the end of the auction !  ;D
