They use those pictures of guns, etc. to draw in the crowd.  I love estate sells but don't get to hit them as often due to working full time.  So all of the good stuff is gone by Friday after work and saturday morning.

I've not had many of those digging sells.  Have gone to a few that they say "everything in this room is $1" or such sign.  Have picked up a few copper-silver trays and small items from such places.  It's almost like storage units - is a crap shoot at times.

Crowds for me are still very sporatic.  One auction we will have 30-50 with a bunch of newbies.  My last auction with a auctioneer only had about 35 in attendance.  He normally brings people in from all over.  Prices for units are still all over the board also.

Trend from last week was still pretty high numbers.  Most of the people last week were regulars / older newbies.  I have seen newer faces but they are mostly out-of-towners coming to larger city since the small auctions are drying up.

Do have one new guy that must be an out-of-towner that is killing the other stores.  He is in a walker so must have a crew to clean out his units.  He has been buying up large units and paying some big $$ for them.  I have yet to figure out if he is making money or just pissing it away.  So far he has bought 5 $400-$800 units this month.

For me - the computer shop owner or coin shop owner that put all that inventory in storage instead of selling it.

I mostly look at a unit and classify it as "grandma unit, tool unit, cloths unit, trash unit, etc."

Today found me at my 7 facility caravan once again.  Like last month the units were slim.  First place only had 1, next 0, next 1, then finally a 3 unit spot.  Crowd was what I'm considering normal right now at about 50 people.  Only a few new faces, everyone else was mostly new faces I've seen at the last dozen auctions.  Units were priced high again IMO.  It seems we have more and more out-of-town buyers coming in needing inventory for their stores.  How they make money with the prices they pay + travel is beyond me.

I took a gamble and split off 1/2 way in to hit another auction on the industrial side of town.  They had 5 units out of 6 left when I called at 10am for a 1pm auction.  Four of us showed up.  Units were CRAP.  All of them looked to have been searched/tossed or were very empty.  Two went to one of the regulars, two to a newer regular (beat me by a quarter), and I got one.  Was a silent bid auction.  I paid $10 for a microwave, macbook box, broken hamper, some cloths, and 1 box of random items.  I really bid on the Office Prof 2010 student edition box I had seen.  Disk wasn't in there but I do have the product code which I needed.  Pair that with some disk I have and can sell it for $25 or more.  All depends on ebay pulling listing or not.

I did already make 1/2 my money back in change.  I laughed when found a broom and 1/2 roll of trash bags in the unit.  Was like sweet - it is a self contained unit for cleaning it out :)

So nothing steller for me this week.  Should make money on both units if get a chance to sell this weekend.

Nice MovieMan - how much did you get it for if don't mind me asking?  I'd love a room like that.  Of course most of it would stay in my shop instead of being sold but still.  Great catch.

Never mind - just read the other post where you mentioned you paid $1900.  I was thinking $1500 for my area.

Well dang - I just feel cheated now.  I've never gotten any hits, flirting, or nada in my emails from CL.  Just the normal - "son/daughter/dog totaled my car/boat/house but I just got X/Y/Z job that makes tons of money.  "  Guess I'm just not cute enough with my words  ::)

Hmm - that does give me an idea Money (don't ask why).  Maybe time for another ebay sale.

Picker's Paradise / Re: Picking Yard Sales Weekend May 4
« on: May 07, 2012, 08:16:50 PM »
I didn't get to do any picking since was selling.  On the prices at yard sales I have seen some outrageous prices.  One lady had a generator for sale with a price of $300.  I looked it up on my phone and it's new for $298.  Couldn't get it to start so offered her $50 for it but she wouldn't bite.  Hit other sales that same weekend to people asking $8 for PS2 games and the like.  Most vendors at the flea are only $5 and under.

On the porn I would of had to scan the titles / dates.  If it's newer stuff and they only wanted say a $.25 or $.50 each per title I could of made a few bucks profit per title doing re-sale.  Someone had a post here with a site that bought porn DVDs.  I've only been able to send in and sell 2 titles but that was $9 I was going to trash.  I have NEVER seen porn at a yard sale however, only out of units.

Well it wasn't my best return for a saturday but it wasn't bad.  Only $100 after the $45 spot fee.  Good thing was I moved a bunch of "old" inventory that had been sitting.  So cloths, books, household goods all sold.  A few coins, CDs, and games which are my main biggie at the normal flea were only so/so.  Biggest sell was a $10 box fan (new at walmart $14.95).  Since the place had no electricity I didn't think it would sell.  Guess when I could prove it worked the guy wanted it (love solar + batteries).

Talked with a number of people from the local flea (vendors and buyers) that I saw and they said it was dead out there.  Guess with all the events going on around town it drew too much of the crowds away.

I would love a Friday night sell like that bulldogmom.  And $15 for a 20x20 is a super buy.  I have plenty of tables, large items, and a cloths rack could fill that spot up with.

Place I'm at advertises they are open on Friday but it's mostly just vendors out there to restock for the weekend.

Flea Markets / Re: Stole Goods at swap meets <question>

Well the main flea I sell in has a cop there every weekend.  He "patrols" for counterfit goods and things.  The biggest concern I've had at the flea is watching out for counterfit money.  About once or twice a year they come over the speaker telling all vendors to watch for counterfits.  Many times it's joe blow printing some $20s off on his home computer type thing.  Easy to spot if you know just a bit about currency.  A few times we have had higher end fakes that it would take the marker to check.

Now, the flea 1 mile away up the road is a different story.  I've heard all sorts of stories out of it.  I've even seen people selling bootleg CDs at their booths.  I quickly walk away.  I don't agree with many of the copyright activities or laws, but I sure don't condone it.

I myself toss every copy/fake CD and DVD that I fine.  I've yet to find anything worth checking with the police on.  Guns, high end bikes, etc. I'll run the serial # past the cops on.  I have to get some of those in a unit first.  I always worry about stolen items, drugs, etc.  Is why I take pictures of a unit before I move it, keep my records, and try to play it safe.

Gratz Rockin on a great unit.  That does make life easier when you can break even quickly and still know you have a bunch of stuff to go.  We just had to make the drive back out to my daughter's unit.  The cloths are ok but nothing I saw to really make any money.  However, the shoes I think will sell and make her break even or even make money.  A number of low end high-heel shoes that I call "hooker shoes".  A pair of Timberland boots, a size 8.5 fake leather boots, and to top it off a almost new looking pair of Nike Air Max ($80+ new) shoes.  Figure $4-$10 per pair of shoes/boots and she has 8 in boxes and a tote with other shoes and baby shoes.  The money maker will be the VW electric car.  It even had the charger in it (surprise).  So if that charges up and running that is her money.

I want some guy units.  I keep getting the girl stuff....of course is what I get with 2 daughters, one that always goes with me to auction and the other is starting to join in.

Just like normal storage units you check the same legal listings.  They may be under a "random company name" with POD #XYZ3948Js, POD # 18438SH9SF, etc.

Well today the crowd was what I expected.  A good 50 people with most of them newbies or new (last 2 month) people.  A few of the older regulars came back today to test the waters.  Units were mostly furniture and prices all over the board.  I didn't get a unit today but my daughter did.  She loves this facility as she can make the auction with me after school.  A 10x10 or so opened up with a scattering of cloths, shoes, a pillow pet in a walmart bag, a barbie car (think old pedal style - didn't get a good look), etc.  Auction guy asked for bids and my daughter calls out $5.  She almost had it also till one of the newbies said $7 at the 2 count.  Daughter said $10, noobie $15, and at this point she calls out in a strong voice $20.  At this all the regulars are cheering her on.  They know her from past auctions and always joke with her.  Noobie calls out $25, and my daughter goes $30 in a strong voice once again quickly.  At this point even the auction is rooting for her and makes a comment.  She gets the unit for $30 bucks and used her money.  She may actually make money off the unit.  We will see tuesday afternoon when we go to clean it out.

Well for me this week is auction week.  Have a 3 caravan today at 4pm.  Single place that normally don't hold auctions Tuesday.  Then my 7 facility caravan on thursday.  Today's auction is unusual as it's normally the 3rd Monday of the month but they skipped last month.  Next week is a semi-busy auction week also.  Then it slows down to maybe 1 a week.  It's normally the 1st and 2nd weeks that we have multiple auctions.  Just rare to have any multiples on the same day to thin out the crowd :(.
